Background: Climate change is one of the greatest threats to human health. The UK health and care system is responsible for 4%–5% of the country’s carbon footprint. Following an ambitious commitment to ‘Delivering a Net Zero NHS’, there is an ongoing urgent drive to advocate for proactive sustainability measures across the workforce healthcare practice areas. As the third largest workforce within the NHS, allied health professionals (AHPs) are crucial players in this net zero commitment. Implementing suitable carbon reduction strategies requires leadership and more clarity on the practical steps that AHPs can take specific to their unique skill set. Objective: …

In this reflection we make the argument that Bernstein’s theory offers an exceptionally powerful resource for analyzing social systems such as education, which critical realists as well as Bernstein have described in similar ways as “open.” Bernstein’s work has two significant features that contribute to this power, namely its capacity to conceptualize deep structures and organizing principles of education, teaching, and learning, as well as the possibilities it opens for imagining and accounting for alternatives and change through “open concepts.” Bernstein’s work is thus especially valuable both for analyzing 10educational inequality as well as for developing and testing measures for …

Trial By Fire: Disaster Justice And Lessons Learned, Clifford Villa
Faculty Scholarship
Disaster Justice reflects the intersection of environmental justice and disaster law. The study of disaster justice is becoming increasingly essential as disasters become more frequent and devastating in the face of accelerating climate change. Disaster law is marked by statutes such as the federal Stafford Act and by theory such as the “disaster cycle” of readiness, response, and recovery. Environmental justice recognizes that the distribution of harms such as bad air or water quality may be distributed inequitably among groups such as low-income populations or racial minorities. In similar fashion, the adverse impacts of disasters may also be distributed inequitably …

The imbibition process, which is characterized by the displacement of non-wetting phase by wetting phase in porous media, plays a crucial role in enhancing oil recovery of unconventional reservoirs. However, due to the complex nature of reservoir characteristics and fluid properties, existing research on this phenomenon presents contradictory conclusions and interpretations. This paper aims to fill this knowledge gap by providing a comprehensive review of the fundamental concepts, primary mechanical factors, and critical influences in oil-water imbibition. Primary mechanisms, including capillary, viscous, gravitational, hydrostatic, inertial, capillary back, dead end, and osmotic forces, are analyzed in terms of their key roles …

Dasyurus Hallucatus Movement Response To Fire In A Complex, Resource Rich Tropical Savanna, Ian J. Radford, Annette Cook, Natasha Harrison, Ben Corey, Roberta Bencini, Harriet R. Mills
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The northern quoll, Dasyurus hallucatus, is part of a suite of threatened native northern Australian mammals that have inappropriate fire regimes listed as a threatening process. However, fire responses reported for D. hallucatus are inconsistent among different studies. Based on the theory that the fire response of D. hallucatus will depend partially on habitat quality, we postulate that home range in high quality savannas of the north Kimberley will be small, post-breeding male mortality low and prey resources little affected by fire. Based on previous research we hypothesised that male D. hallucatus would respond to fire more than females. By …

Identification of the genomic regions that contribute to reproductive isolation and how they interact is a major goal of evolutionary genetics. Much effort has focused on locating candidate genes and potential barrier loci by scanning genomes for regions of excess differentiation (FST). An alternative, and perhaps more robust approach, is to scan for genomic regions exhibiting steep clines in allele frequency across a hybrid zone. We develop a computationally efficient method for approximating cline parameters for large number of loci, and apply it to genomic data from across a hybrid zone between flower colour varieties of Antirrhinum majus (A. m. …
