Rodent Exclusion Techniques: A Training Guide For National Park Service Employees, Gerard Hoddenbach, Jerry Johnson, Carol Disalvo
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
Rodents have been a common problem in living and working environments, probably, ever since humans began living in permanent dwellings. Even today many people believe rodent infestations are "inevitable". However, the recent appearance of Hantavirus (Sin Nombre Virus, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, HPS) in the Western states has re-awakened the public to the serious health problems posed by rodents and has prompted new inquiries into more effective ways to manage infestations. This manual is designed as a training reference for making rodent control in buildings an attainable goal.

Book Review: Exploring Ancient Native America: An Archaeological Guide, By David Hurst Thomas, 1994. Macmillan, New York, Xxii + 314 Pp., Maps, Photographs., Timothy K. Perttula
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
This book on the sites, museums, and archaeological programs across the United States and Canada by David Hurst Thomas should be of great interest to the avocational and professional archaeological community. In the volume, he takes the reader on a guided tour of North American archaeology, focusing on places that "encourage visitation, provide interpretation, and can ensure adequate protection for both the visitor and for the surviving archaeological record." In return, his only request is for the help of the public in "protecting that past for others to enjoy as well." Throughout the text, he balances his views of archaeology …

An Immunomodulating Mycotoxin Interferes With The Development Of Autoimmune Diabetes In Diabetes-Prone Bb/Wor Rats, Honggang Liu
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Various fungal products have immunomodulating activity and some have been studied regarding prevention of transplantation rejection. Prior to this investigation, the mycotoxin, gliotoxin (GT), has never been investigated as an immunotherapeutic drug for autoimmune disease. GT is a fungal secondary metabolite and a member of the epipolythiodioxopiperazine (ETP) family which has been shown to inhibit phagocytosis, induction of cytolytic T cells and the proliferation of T cells following mitogen stimulation. GT also induces in vitro apoptosis in certain immune cell types. More importantly, GT exhibits selective activity towards cells of hemopoietic origin.
Autoimmune diseases are disorders caused by immune responses …

Alterations In The Microbiota Of Nestling Tree Swallows And The Effects On Their Growth And Development, Natasha Brock
Alterations In The Microbiota Of Nestling Tree Swallows And The Effects On Their Growth And Development, Natasha Brock
McNair Scholars Journal
A subclinical dose of broad-spectrum antibiotics (Bactrim and Clavarnox) we re given to one-half of nestling Tree Swallow (Tacbycineta bicolor) brood s on nestling day (ND) 3 and 4 while the other half of the brood received a placebo. Cloacal swabs were taken on ND5 and D15 to monitor changes in the gastrointestinal microbial community. Physical measures to track growth and development of nestlings were taken on ND5, ND15, and ND19 . Bacterial counts were low on ND5 in both treated and untreated birds. By ND15 the only component of the microbial community that was altered was the number of …

Editorial: The Whipple Bacillus Lives (Ex Vivo)!, David A. Relman
United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications
Cultivation of the bacillus associated with Whipple's disease, Tropheryma whippelii, has been an elusive goal for many generations of clinicians and microbiologists familiar with this disease. The desire to identify this enigmatic organism has motivated many of these efforts. Many purported successes have later proven erroneous, and many more unsuccessful attempts have never been reported [1]. Cell-free media, animal cells, and animals themselves have all been used, resulting in recovery of a wide range of bacterial species, including members of the Corynebacterium, Streptococcus, Propionibacterium, and Haemophilus genera. The rough resemblance of Rhodococcus equi- , Mycobacterium …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Anthony F. Dehl
Graduate Research Papers
The education system in the United States is changing rapidly. The role of teacher and administrators should also change. Opening the school to its community is one of the changes taking place, not just for physical use but also planning of the school's future. Part of this change should include more, and better training for our teachers. As part of this training, teachers need to develop technology skills to share with all students. Communication is an important part of this change as we become a globally competitive workforce. Planning for our future will take a cooperative action from members of …

1997 North American Conference On The Monarch Butterfly
1997 North American Conference On The Monarch Butterfly
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The Monarch Butterfly has attracted much interest because it is unique not only among insects, but among all living things. The largest Monarch population emerges in the central and northeastern United States and Canada and flutters its way south several thousand kilometers to remote fir forests in the central mountains of Mexico. There they overwinter in about twenty compact colonies—sometimes numbering in the tens of millions—often within a stone’s throw of local subsistence farms sustaining Mexican campesinos (small-scale farmers) and indigenous peoples. In the spring, the northward trek begins, often with an additional generation being required to reach the northern …

Exercise During Pregnancy, Sue Merkel
Exercise During Pregnancy, Sue Merkel
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Physical fitness and sports participation has increased in popularity over the years. This raises concerns as to whether exercising while pregnant is beneficial or harmful to the mother and her unborn child. Research has determined the maternal and fetal responses during various forms of exercise. This research has been used to help establish guidelines and recommendations for pregnant women. However, there continues to be controversy as to the exercise guidelines pregnant females need to follow. Women experience physical changes throughout their pregnancy which can lead to low back pain, abdominal or pelvic floor dysfunctions. These complications can be prevented or …
