Susceptibility To Taura Syndrome Virus Of Some Penaeid Shrimp Species Native To The Gulf Of Mexico And The Southeastern United States, Robin M. Overstreet, Donald V. Lightner, Ken W. Hasson, Stacey Mcilwain, Jeffrey M. Lotz

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Experimental studies demonstrated that Penaeus setiferus, but not Penaeus aztecus or Penaeus duorarum, could be killed by Taura syndrome virus (TSV). However, specimens of P. setiferus that survived infection and both P. aztecus and P. duorarum at least 79 days postexposure that did not demonstrate gross signs of infection were shown to harbor virus by bioassay using Penaeus vannamei, a highly susceptible target host. Consequently, all three of those penaeids native to the southeast United States can serve as carriers or reservoir hosts of TSV without necessarily exhibiting disease. Infections in P. setiferus took longer to cause …

Constraints To Adoption Of Appropriate Breast Feeding Practices In A Squatter Settlement In Karachi, Pakistan, S H. Badruddin, S N. Inam, S Ramzanali, K Hendricks Feb 1997

Constraints To Adoption Of Appropriate Breast Feeding Practices In A Squatter Settlement In Karachi, Pakistan, S H. Badruddin, S N. Inam, S Ramzanali, K Hendricks

Section of Internal Medicine

Appropriate breast feeding practices (ABFP) are important for successful lactation. Constraints to adoption of ABFP by mothers in a squatter settlement in Karachi, Pakistan are reported. One hundred and two mother-infant pairs were followed from birth to 16 weeks of age. Eighty-seven infants received prelacteal feeds of honey as a quasi-religious ritual, 16 received ghutti for "cleansing of stomach", other prelacteal feeds were given as substitutes for breast feeding. Twenty nine mothers initiated breast feeding within 4 hours of birth. Supplemental water was given to 53 infants; major reasons being mothers' perception of thirst and diarrhoea in the infant. Supplemental …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Nematodes Of The Genus Pratylenchus Using Nuclear 26s Rdna, Luma Al-Banna, Valerie M. Williamson, Scott Lyell Gardner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

We used nucleotide sequences of the large subunit ribosomal genes (26S rDNA) to examine evolutionary relationships among species of the genus Pratylenchus (Order: Tylenchida, Family: Pratylenchidae), commonly known as root-lesion nematodes. Ten species of Pratylenchus were studied including, P. penetrans, P. crenatus, P. minyus, P. vulnus, P. thornei, P. musicale, P. coffeae, P. bexincisus, P. scribneri, and P. brachyurus. The species Hirschmanniella belli, Meloidogyne javanica, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, Nacobbus eberruns, Radopholus similis, and Xiphinema index were used as outgroups. Based on parsimony analyses of approximately 307 …

Myxobolus Mississippiensis N. Sp. (Myxosporea) From Gills Of Lepomis Macrochirus In Mississippi, David K. Cone, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Myxobolus mississippiensis n. sp. is described from gill lamellae of the bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) inhabiting the Pascagoula River System, Mississippi. Fresh spores measure 16.4-18.7 μm long, 3.9-6.2 μm wide, and 4.7-6.2 μm thick. Spore width to length ratio is 1:3.2. Polar capsules are 5.5-7.8 μm long and 1.5-2.3 μm wide, with 9-10 filament coils that when extruded measure 42.1 ± 4.2 μm. This parasite is unique among known species of Myxobolus,/i> in having spores that are lenticular in frontal view.

Cucullanus Palmeri N. Sp. (Nematoda: Cucullanidae) From The Batfish Ogcocephalus Nasutus In The Gulf Of Mexico, John L. Crites, Robin M. Overstreet Feb 1997

Cucullanus Palmeri N. Sp. (Nematoda: Cucullanidae) From The Batfish Ogcocephalus Nasutus In The Gulf Of Mexico, John L. Crites, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Cucullanus palmeri n. sp. is described from the shortnose batfish, Ogcocephalus nasutus, in the Gulf of Mexico. This species is anatomically most similar to Cucullanus gendrei but differs from it in having a shorter esophagus and longer tail. Males differ in having a smaller gubernaculum and a different arrangement of a lateral caudal papilla. Cucullanus palmeri is readily distinguished from Cucullanus lophii, also from a lophiform fish host, in that the deirids and excretory pore are not posterior to the posterior end of the esophagus like in C. lophii.

The Fate And Disposition Of Metolachlor And 2, 4-D Under Irrigated Corn And Turf, Ghassan R. Musharrafieh, Richard C. Peralta, Robert W. Hill, Howard M. Deer

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A field lysimeter experiment was conducted during the summers of 1993 and 1994, at the River Laboratory, Utah State University, Logan, Utah. The intent was to study the fate and disposition of metolachlor and 2,4-D in a one dimensional soil system. Metolachlor was applied to corn and 2,4-D was applied to turf. The mobility, persistence, and degradation of these herbicides were investigated in the field lysimeters using four irrigation treatment levels on corn and two irrigation levels on turf. The four irrigation levels applied to corn were 0, 30, 60, and 120 percent of potential evapotranspiration. The two irrigation levels …

Inapplicability Of The Self-Critical Analysis Privilege To The Drug And Medical Device Industry, Patricia L. Andel Feb 1997

Inapplicability Of The Self-Critical Analysis Privilege To The Drug And Medical Device Industry, Patricia L. Andel

San Diego Law Review

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requires drug and medical device manufacturers to investigate and report to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration incidents involving their products, even though personal injuries may not have resulted. These reports are available to the public through the Freedom of Information Act (FOA) and can be used against drug and medical device defendants in civil litigation. To encourage candid reporting, some commentators have suggested the application of the self-critical analysis privilege to this industry. The author reviews the historical development of the privilege, arguing both that application of the privilege is federally preempted …

Balancing Work And Family In Cooperative Extension: History, Effective Programs, And Future Directions, Robert J. Fetsch, Mary S. Kennington Feb 1997

Balancing Work And Family In Cooperative Extension: History, Effective Programs, And Future Directions, Robert J. Fetsch, Mary S. Kennington

Journal of Extension

Balancing family and work is a continuous struggle for many Cooperative Extension faculty. In 1981 ECOP formulated a position paper recommending that managers critically examine policies and practices and their effects on the family life of Extension employees. Research findings are reported on Extension Agents' stress levels and their effects on family life from six states. Program effects are reported from four different workshops in three states. Components of effective programs are described. To reduce Extension faculty's stress and strain levels, modify organizational policies and management strategies and support faculty who take proactive steps to balance their work and family.

Vcu Voice (1997-01-27)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Nucleotide Or Nucleoside Photoaffinity Compound Modified Antibodies, Methods For Their Manufacture And Use Thereof As Diagnostics And Therapeutics, Boyd E. Haley, Heinz Köhler, Krishnan Rajagopalan, Gabriela Pavlinkova

Chemistry Faculty Patents

Sites on antibodies having affinity for photoaffinity compounds, in particular purine or azidopurine containing compounds are taught. These sites provide for the site-specific attachment of nucleotide photoaffinity compounds to antibodies, e.g., ATP- or GTP-analog photoaffinity compounds by photochemical reaction. These nucleotide photoaffinity compounds may additionally be attached to molecules having a desired therapeutic or diagnostic activity, and the resultant conjugates used as diagnostics or therapeutics.
