Assessment Of Nonverbal Cognitive Processes In Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Jacqueline J. Head

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

This study reviewed the literature on ADHD/ADD including a survey of the disorder, current clinical interventions and, diagnostic techniques. Data was collected comparing three groups of children (control, ADHD, ADD) on a newly developed nonverbal assessment test, the Leiter-R. The findings show that the Leiter-R resulted in significant differences in scores between the control group and the ADHD and ADD groups on twelve of the twenty subtests. This demonstrates the efficacy of the Leiter-R as an assessment tool for ADHD and ADD. Based on these findings the following tentative recommendations were proposed to assist children with ADHD and ADD. Children …

A New Evidentiary Standard For Criminal Appellate Review: Clewis V. State, Earl R. Waddell Iii, Tracy L. Abell

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

In Clewis v. State, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals finally addressed the conflict regarding proper appellate review of factual sufficiency of the evidence. The Clewis decision adopted Stone and established, for the first time since the 1981 amendments, the constitutional power and duty of the courts of appeals to review the factual sufficiency of the evidence in appropriate cases. In attempting to predict the effect of Clewis on review of noncapital criminal cases in the courts of appeals and death penalty Cases in the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, this article examines the historical precedents of selected civil cases …

In "A Higher Power" We Trust: Alcoholics Anonymous As A Condition Of Probation And Establishment Of Religion, Byran K. Henry Mar 1997

In "A Higher Power" We Trust: Alcoholics Anonymous As A Condition Of Probation And Establishment Of Religion, Byran K. Henry

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Part I of this comment discusses probation and the substance of AA, as well as touches on the Supreme Court's attempts to define religion. Part II seeks to discern the proper constitutional standard to be applied to AA as a condition of probation from Supreme Court cases. Part III concentrates on the lower courts' application of the elusive Establishment Clause test. Finally, Part IV briefly highlights the shortcomings of the standards currently being applied to AA as a condition of probation and proposes a solution designed to provide a simpler standard for lower courts to apply and clarify a confusing …

The Dynamics Of Democracy: Travel, Premature Predation, And The Components Of Political Identity, Nicholas S. Zeppos Mar 1997

The Dynamics Of Democracy: Travel, Premature Predation, And The Components Of Political Identity, Nicholas S. Zeppos

Vanderbilt Law Review

Democracy is indeed an elusive concept and any effort to develop the constituent elements of so important a political idea ought to be encouraged. From any number of perspectives it is clear that democracy must include more than simply ratifying the outcomes of either citizen or representative voting., And when a court is asked to set aside the results of a process some describe as democratic, the challenge to enrich the concept becomes even more pressing, particularly when the judicial power is invoked in the name of enhancing democracy. The Supreme Court's decision in Romer v. Evan dramatically poses the …

Romer V. Evans And Democracy's Domain, Jane S. Schacter Mar 1997

Romer V. Evans And Democracy's Domain, Jane S. Schacter

Vanderbilt Law Review

As we gather at this Symposium to probe the definition of democracy in the coming century, it seems fitting to note that we are continuing a very old political conversation rather than initiating a new one. The meaning of democracy has long been contested. One of the most vexing aspects of the debate has always centered on whether and how to limit the majority's prerogative to act in ways that disadvantage minorities. Viewed from a different angle, the question is how to configure the relationship between majority preferences and equality norms. It is the basic dilemma of democratic equality: What …
