United States V. Olin Corporation: How A Polluter Got Off Clean, Mary Frances Palisano Sep 1997

United States V. Olin Corporation: How A Polluter Got Off Clean, Mary Frances Palisano

Pace Environmental Law Review

Since its inception, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) has remained controversial because it does not explicitly mention the term "retroactive" in its text. However, until recently, no court had ever rejected CERCLA's retroactive application. Nor had any court held that CERCLA was an unconstitutional stretch of Congress' Commerce Clause authority. On May 20, 1996, the Southern District Court of Alabama ignored fourteen years of precedent by holding that CERCLA could not be applied retroactively and that the law exceeded Congress' Commerce Clause authority in instances of intrastate groundwater contamination. The decision of United States v. Olin …

A Catholic Future For Catholic Higher Education? The State Of The Question, David J. O’Brien Sep 1997

A Catholic Future For Catholic Higher Education? The State Of The Question, David J. O’Brien

Journal of Catholic Education

Catholic higher education is prospering, but most colleges and universities exhibit uncertainty about their specifically Catholic mission and identity. For 30 years, these schools have lived with the consequences of separate incorporation, as religious orders passed control to mixed boards of trustees and the institutions sought to improve the quality of their programs. Now their faculty and staffs are lay, highly professional, and religiously very diverse. If the institutions are to be meaningfully Catholic, trustees, faculty, and professional staff must develop programs which foster Catholic intellectual life and influence the work of teaching, research, and service. In doing so, they …

Autopsy In The Cancer Patient: The Nurse's Role, Patricia Rushton Sep 1997

Autopsy In The Cancer Patient: The Nurse's Role, Patricia Rushton

Faculty Publications

Nurses spend many hours with dying cancer patients, developing close relationships with both the patients and their families. However, nurses are frequently not involved in the process of requesting an autopsy, either by choice or tradition. During this time of great stress, the nurse can be more involved. The nurse who understands the reasons for autopsy and its ramification for the grieving process can be actively involved in supporting the physician who makes the request and the family members who must make the this difficult decision. It is possible that the nurse can be the health team member designated to …

An Actin-Related Protein In Drosophila Colocalizes With Heterochromatin Protein 1 In Pericentric Heterochromatin, S Frankel, E Sigel, C Craig, Sarah C.R. Elgin, M Mooseker, S Artavanis-Tsakonas

Biology Faculty Research

The actin-related proteins have been identified by virtue of their sequence similarity to actin. While their structures are thought to be closely homologous to actin, they exhibit a far greater range of functional diversity. We have localized the Drosophila actin-related protein, Arp4, to the nucleus. It is most abundant during embryogenesis but is expressed at all developmental stages. Within the nucleus Arp4 is primarily localized to the centric heterochromatin. Polytene chromosome spreads indicate it is also present at much lower levels in numerous euchromatic bands. The only other protein in Drosophila reported to be primarily localized to centric heterochromatin in …

The Future Of The Third Sector, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The U.S. "nonprofit sector" and other forms of contemporary national third sectors which are currently spreading around the world arose in a unique historical moment and for distinct historical reasons and are unlikely to outlast that moment in history. Voluntary action on the other hand has deep roots reaching far back in human history and is likely to be around far into the future.

Drugs Effect, Daisy Fang Sep 1997

Drugs Effect, Daisy Fang

Theses

This thesis project is a 3 minutes 30 seconds computer generated animation that includes 2D graphics design, 2D animation, 3D modeling and animation. In addition, an optional interactive multimedia project serves as the introduction to this animation. I chose this subject because I think computer graphics is a tool that enables the impossible to become possible. The illusory effects of drug abuse by the user can be portrayed by means of computer graphics. The main focus of this thesis project is to try to make my audience (youth) understand that drugs abuse is the point of no return. One becomes …

Case Studies In The Analysis Of The Dod Migration System Selection Process, Paul E. Boley Ii

Theses and Dissertations

One of the focuses of Corporate Information Management (CIM) initiative in the Department of Defense is the elimination of duplicate automated information systems. This thesis is a case study examination of the selection process in the logistics, transportation, and health functional areas. The case studies were performed through a one-time review of documents relating to system selections in each functional area. A review of strategic information systems planning and systems implementation literature is used to examine the results in the three areas. The thesis concludes with three suggestions for improving the selection process with an emphasis on systems implementation.

An Investigation Of Prioritizing Research Topics In Professional Communication, Richard G. Buschagen Sep 1997

An Investigation Of Prioritizing Research Topics In Professional Communication, Richard G. Buschagen

Theses and Dissertations

This research explored which areas and methods of research need to be identified and developed to most effectively communicate business and technical information. The research was sparked by the current literature which indicates that a gap exists between academicians, who do most of the research, and practitioners, who utilize the research results. This effort was intended to address possible causes of this problem by establishing the importance of nine research topic areas, six data collection methods/sources, and three data analysis methods for both academicians and researchers and other demographic characteristics. The research concludes that the participants generally agreed on which …

Meeting U.S. Defense Needs In Space: Effects Of A Shrinking Defense Industrial Base On The Satellite Industry, Ronald B. Cole Sep 1997

Meeting U.S. Defense Needs In Space: Effects Of A Shrinking Defense Industrial Base On The Satellite Industry, Ronald B. Cole

Theses and Dissertations

U.S. defense industrial base (DIB) deterioration and increased DOD interest in space exploitation highlights the U.S. satellite industry as one DIB sector requiring analysis. Despite DIB problems, this industry must maintain the capability to produce advanced satellites for the DOD. Commercial Military Integration (CMI) will, according to experts, eliminate problems inherent with a separate DIB. This research focused on investigating satellite industry capability to meet DOD space requirements. Through literature review, case study analysis and interviews, effects of a shrinking DIB on the satellite industry were determined. A model for DIB strength was developed and analyzed through literature review. General …

How The Presence Of A Risk Ladder, Time Interval Comparison, And Smoking Comparison Affect Risk Perception, Steve A. Dinzart Sep 1997

How The Presence Of A Risk Ladder, Time Interval Comparison, And Smoking Comparison Affect Risk Perception, Steve A. Dinzart

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study is to increase the knowledge available on the relative effectiveness of risk ladders as a presentation format for explaining risk magnitudes to the public. An experiment was conducted to test the hypotheses that an individual's risk perception varies with the presence of a risk ladder, time interval comparison, and smoking comparison. Subjects were AFIT Professional Continuing Education students, asked to assume a particular level of a health hazard in their homes, to read a brochure explaining the hazard, and then to complete a questionnaire. Results demonstrated that subjects exposed to a graphical risk ladder perceived …

Comparison Of Effects Of Change From 8 To 12 Hour Shifts On Air Force Aircraft Maintenance Workers, Daniel W. Overland Sep 1997

Comparison Of Effects Of Change From 8 To 12 Hour Shifts On Air Force Aircraft Maintenance Workers, Daniel W. Overland

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of converting from an 8 hour shift system to a 12 hour system on aircraft maintenance personnel. The squadron had converted its 24 hour operations from an 8 hour shift schedule to a 12 hour shift schedule in stages, changing one group first and then another. A smaller third group of workers remained on 8 hour shifts. Individual differences in job related outcomes and situational constraints were measured for all three groups. Results showed that changing from 8 to 12 hour shifts affected worker well-being and morale, as indicated by an increase in hospital visits …

Increased Focal Adhesion Kinase- And Urokinase-Type Plasminogen Activator Receptor-Associated Cell Signaling In Endothelial Cells Exposed To Asbestos, A Barchowsky, B M. Lannon, L C. Elmore, M D. Treadwell Sep 1997

Increased Focal Adhesion Kinase- And Urokinase-Type Plasminogen Activator Receptor-Associated Cell Signaling In Endothelial Cells Exposed To Asbestos, A Barchowsky, B M. Lannon, L C. Elmore, M D. Treadwell

Dartmouth Scholarship

Exposure of low-passage endothelial cells in culture to nonlethal amounts of asbestos, but not refractory ceramic fiber-1, increases cell motility and gene expression. These changes may be initiated by the fibers mimicking matrix proteins as ligands for receptors on the cell surface. In the present study, 1- to 3-hr exposures of endothelial cells to 5 mg/cm2 of chrysotile asbestos caused marked cell elongation and motility. However, little morphological change was seen when chrysotile was added to cells pretreated with either mannosamine to prevent assembly of glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored receptors or with herbimycin A to inhibit tyrosine kinase activity. Affinity purification of …

Cell Signaling Pathways Elicited By Asbestos, B T. Mossman, S Faux, Y Janssen, L A. Jimenez, Cynthia Timblin, Christine Zanella, Jonathan Goldberg, Eric Walsh, Aaron Barchowsky, Kevin Driscoll

Dartmouth Scholarship

In recent years, it has become apparent that minerals can trigger alterations in gene expression by initiating signaling events upstream of gene transactivation. These cascades may be initiated at the cell surface after interaction of minerals with the plasma membrane either through receptorlike mechanisms or integrins. Alternatively, signaling pathways may be stimulated by active oxygen species generated both during phagocytosis of minerals and by redox reactions on the mineral surface. At least two signaling cascades linked to activation of transcription factors, i.e., DNA-binding proteins involved in modulating gene expression and DNA replication, are stimulated after exposure of lung cells to …

Qsr1p, A 60s Ribosomal Subunit Protein, Is Required For Joining Of 40s And 60s Subunits., Dominic P. Eisinger, Frederick A. Dick, Bernard L. Trumpower Sep 1997

Qsr1p, A 60s Ribosomal Subunit Protein, Is Required For Joining Of 40s And 60s Subunits., Dominic P. Eisinger, Frederick A. Dick, Bernard L. Trumpower

Dartmouth Scholarship

QSR1 is a recently discovered, essential Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene, which encodes a 60S ribosomal subunit protein. Thirty-one unique temperature-sensitive alleles of QSR1 were generated by regional codon randomization within a conserved 20-amino-acid sequence of the QSR1-encoded protein. The temperature-sensitive mutants arrest as viable, large, unbudded cells 24 to 48 h after a shift to 37 degrees C. Polysome and ribosomal subunit analysis by velocity gradient centrifugation of lysates from temperature-sensitive qsr1 mutants and from cells in which Qsr1p was depleted by down regulation of an inducible promoter revealed the presence of half-mer polysomes and a large pool of free 60S …

Sqt1, Which Encodes An Essential Wd Domain Protein Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Suppresses Dominant-Negative Mutations Of The Ribosomal Protein Gene Qsr1., Dominic P. Eisinger, Frederick A. Dick, Elke Denke, Bernard L. Trumpower

Dartmouth Scholarship

QSR1 is an essential Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene, which encodes a 60S ribosomal subunit protein required for joining of 40S and 60S subunits. Truncations of QSR1 predicted to encode C-terminally truncated forms of Qsr1p do not substitute for QSR1 but do act as dominant negative mutations, inhibiting the growth of yeast when expressed from an inducible promoter. The dominant negative mutants exhibit a polysome profile characterized by 'half-mer' polysomes, indicative of a subunit joining defect like that seen in other qsr1 mutants (D. P. Eisinger, F. A. Dick, and B. L. Trumpower, Mol. Cell. Biol. 17:5136-5145, 1997.) By screening a high-copy …
