In April of 1997, far-reaching regulations aimed at the protection of New York City's (City's) drinking water supply went into effect. The Watershed Agreement was reached after more than two years of delicate negotiations by the City, the Coalition of Watershed Towns, the State of New York, the Environmental Protection Agency and a handful of environmental groups. Under this celebrated compromise, the City will spend $1.2 billion to protect its water supply at its source, rather than construct a physically massive and extraordinarily expensive filtration plant that would be required by the federal government under the Safe Drinking Water Act. …

This Comment advocates an effective way to implement the existing technology of zero emission vehicles (ZEVs). ZEVs are vehicles that do not produce any pollution while in operation. These twenty-first century vehicles are a stark contrast to the noisy, smog-producing and natural resource depleting automobiles of this nearly expired century. At present, the only ZEVs available for marketing are electric vehicles (EVs), which are powered by battery as opposed to fuel. These batteries are rechargeable and recyclable, further reducing the environmental impacts offers as well as the demand on the world's diminishing oil supply. Runoff, Erosion, And Soil Quality Characteristics Of A Former Conservation Reserve Program Site In Southwestern Oklahoma, John E. Gilley, John W. Doran, Thanh H. Dao

This study was conducted to measure runoff, erosion, and soil quality characteristics of a site in southwestern Oklahoma the first year following conversion from the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Treatments included undisturbed CRP, Old World bluestem (Bothriochlora ischaemum L.), no-till wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and conservation-till wheat. Significant differences in surface cover were found between each of the experimental treatments, with values ranging from 100% on the undisturbed CRP site to 42% for the conservation-till treatment. A Servey Of Dental Calculi And Dietary Factors In Dogs, Cholawat Pacharinsak, Damri Darawiroj, Jiranunt Jirasangthong

119 mongrel dogs, brought to Chulalongkorn Veterinary Teaching Hospital, were investigated over a 150-day period. Divided into 4 groups (less than 0.5 yrs, 0.5 to 1.49 yrs, 1.5 to 4.99 yrs, and more than 4.99 yrs) the age of the animals was related to the severity of the accumulated calculi (P<0.05), particularly in the area of the buccal surface. The group, fed on a soft diet, had more calculi deposits than those fed a hard one.

ทำการศึกษาสถานภาพการติดเชื้อโรคไวรัส Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR), Parainfluenza-3 (PI3) และ Bovine Respiratory Syncytial (BRS) ซึ่งเป็นสาเหตุเบื้องต้นที่ก่อให้เกิดโรคทางระบบหายใจและ เป็นสาเหตุของความไม่สมบูรณ์พันธุ์ในโคนม สุ่มตัวอย่างน้ำนมดิบรวมถัง จำนวน 2,070 ฟาร์ม จากศูนย์รับน้ำนมดิบ 53 แห่งใน 31 จังหวัดที่มีการเลี้ยงโคนมในปี พ.ศ. 2538 และ ทดสอบภูมิคุ้มต่อโรคไวรัสดังกล่าวด้วยชุดทดสอบเฉพาะต่อไวรัสแต่ละชนิด ด้วยวิธี ELISA ผลการสำรวจ พบการแพร่โรคไวรัส BVD, IBR, PI3 และ BRS กระจายทั่วประเทศ ฟาร์มโคนมเพียง 7.3% ที่ไม่พบภูมิคุ้มโรคไวรัส 4 ชนิดที่ศึกษา อัตราฟาร์มที่มีภูมิคุ้มกัน ต่อไวรัส BVD, IBR, PI3 และ BRS เท่ากับ 37.3, 23.3, 86.3 และ 71.6% ตามลำดับ นอกจากนี้พบว่า 73% ของฟาร์มที่สำรวจพบภูมิคุ้มโรคต่อไวรัสพร้อมกันมากกว่า 2 ชนิด ขึ้นไป ปัจจุบันประเทศไทยไม่มี นโยบายการควบคุมโรคไวรัสดังกล่าวเนื่องจากขาดข้อมูลทาง ระบาดวิทยาของโรค BVD, IBR, PI3 และ BRS จึงควรทําการศึกษาหาความคุ้มค่าทาง เศรษฐกิจ โดยนำวิธีป้องกันโรคไวรัสดังกล่าวไม่ให้มีการแพร่กระจาย และลดความสูญเสียจาก ไวรัสดังกล่าวด้วยการฉีดวัคซีนเพื่อสร้างภูมิคุ้มต่อไวรัสแก่โคนม และจะเป็นต้นแบบในการสร้างโปรแกรมการจัดการสุขภาพของโคทั้งประเทศ

This study examines tactical military airlift operations conducted during three historical battles - Stalingrad, Dien Bien Phu, and Khe Sanh. Aspects of tactical military airlift operations are identified from these scenarios. The list of important issues that results can be considered when employing tactical military airlift in the future. Using inductive reasoning, tactical military airlift operations in each scenario, and their success or failure, are examined to develop a pattern for recognizing and describing similar situations in the future. Experiences at Stalingrad, Dien Bien Phu, and Khe Sanh indicated that there are nine elements that should be considered when employing …

Lawyers are trained to think in terms of power exercised by a sovereign-an institution authorized to enforce a procedurally appropriate decision with coercive force.' Generally, lawyers have a broad notion of what constitutes a sovereign. In the United States, for example, this notion includes the federal government, state governments, most tribal units, traditional territorial governments and their agencies-e.g., school boards, local public park districts, water run-off management districts, and flea abatement boards-and a host of other institutions. Migration has been an international phenomenon for centuries. The widespread trend toward migration in recent years has resulted in efforts to examine the factors involved in the adaptation of immigrants to life in the host country. This study examines the factors that effect immigrant adaptation and integration in urban neighborhoods in Israel that are undergoing a process of rehabilitation. Adaptation is defined by the variables: contact with neighbors, participation in community activities, sense of belonging to the community and well-being. The claim is often voiced that wife abuse is a problem that "cuts across" all social and economic lines. Yet there is considerable research evidence suggesting an inverse relationship between wife abuse and the socioeconomic status of both victims and perpetrators. The question of the relevance of social class has generally been construed as a factual one, in principle resolvable by collecting more and better data. Doing a participant observation study of a treatment programme for men who batter, I was forced to bracket the "objective," empirical question, but freed to see how certain ideological practices worked to keep class …

Participatory democracy and community development are explored by looking back to the bold experiment undertaken in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1916 to 1920, called the Social Unit Plan. It is a glimpse into the economic, political, cultural and social consciousness of those who participated in the experiment during that period in American history. The paper suggests that by understanding the cultural and social lives of participants, our awareness of the range of options or possible efforts at addressing human social welfare needs in the past and the present are enhanced.

African-American Facilities For Dependent And Delinquent Children In Chicago, 1900 To 1920: The Louise Juvenile School And The Amanda Smith School, Anne Meis Knupfer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article examines two "homes" and later industrial schools founded in the Chicago area for African-American dependent and delinquent children during the Progressive Era: the Louise Juvenile Home and Industrial School; and the Amanda Smith Industrial Home and School. The juvenile court's inception and expansion, especially through the Chicago Woman's Club, as well as African-American club women and probation officers, is first described. The African-American women's activism in fighting segregation and in fund-raising for the schools is especially highlighted. Nonetheless, both schools' success, as well as eventual demise, were due largely to their economic dependence upon the juvenile court.

As qualitative research projects are conceptualized and conducted, they can grow out of alignment as researchers make choices as to their Area of Curiosity, Mission Question, Data Collected, and Data Analysis. This phenomenon of being muddled is a natural, and sometimes necessary, part of the overall process. The important part of being in a muddle is to recognize it and to work to tidy it up. Research on cognitive biases in depression suggests that deficient control of attention underlies impairments in memory for emotionally neutral events. Such impairments might result from general difficulties in focusing and sustaining attention, specific and habitual priorities to attend to matters of personal concern, or both. This paper considers these alternative means of impairment in the context of a review of selected theories and findings; a test of the framework is illustrated; and related considerations are discussed.

The Effects Of Proboctic Preparation On The Performance Of Layers During A Period Of Declining Egg Production, Vanni Muangcharoen, Boonrit Thongsong, Pensuda Hoongpoo

Three hundreds and thirty six ISA Brown layers, 51 weeks of ages, were used to study the effect of adding probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus faecium, electrolytes, acidifier and enzymes), to the feed, on egg production performance. Birds were randomly divided into three groups and received 3 levels, 0, 0.1 and 0.3% of probiotic additive over a period of 12 weeks. Layers fed 0.3% probiotic showed significantly (P<0.05) better FCR per kg of eggs, compared with the other two groups. Adding probiotics did not improve other production traits such as egg quality.

ศึกษาหาหลักฐานการติดเชื้อพาร์โวไวรัสตามธรรมชาติในลูกสุนัขช่วงอายุ 4-8 สัปดาห์ จากแม่สุนัขซึ่งมีภูมิคุ้มกันต่อเชื้อพาร์โวไวรัสที่ศูนย์การสุนัขทหาร โดยตรวจหาแอนติเจน ในอุจจาระด้วยวิธี Hemagglutination Test และระดับแอนติบอดี้ต่อเชื้อพาร์โวไวรัสในซีรั่ม ด้วยวิธี Hemagglutination Inhibition Test จากตัวอย่างอุจจาระและซีรั่มจากลูกสุนัขจำนวน 19 ตัวที่อายุ 4, 6 และ 8 สัปดาห์ รวม 57 ตัวอย่าง ผลการศึกษาพบหลักฐานแอนติเจนที่ ตกตะกอนเม็ดเลือดแดงสุกรในอุจจาระลูกสุนัขได้อย่างน้อยตั้งแต่ที่ 4 สัปดาห์ขึ้นไปในลูกสุนัขทั้งสิ้น 89.47% (17/19) และพบการเพิ่มขึ้นของระดับแอนติบอดี้ต่อพาร์โวไวรัส ทั้งที่อายุ 6 และ 8 สัปดาห์เมื่อเทียบกับที่ 4 และ/หรือ 6 สัปดาห์เป็น 26.32% (5/19) และ 47.37% (9/19) ตามลำดับ ตลอดการศึกษาไม่พบอาการใด ๆ ที่เป็นผลจากการติดเชื้อ พาร์โวไวรัส ผลดังกล่าวแสดงถึงหลักฐานการติดเชื้อพาร์โวไวรัสตามธรรมชาติซึ่งเกิดขึ้นในลูกสุนัขที่แม่มีภูมิคุ้มกันต่อโรคพาร์โวไวรัส

ผลของการคงอยู่ของเส้นเลือด Left Cranial Vena Cava ต่อการทำงานของหัวใจสุนัข, ประสาน ตังควัฒนา, สิริขจร ตังควัฒนา, สราวุธ ศรีงาม, พิพัฒน์พงษ์ แคนลา

จากการศึกษาสุนัขสองตัวที่เตรียมไว้เพื่อการเรียนการสอนวิชากายวิภาคศาสตร์และ การทดลองทางสรีรวิทยาของหัวใจ ได้พบลักษณะของ double cranial vena cava ประกอบด้วย right และ left cranial vena cava โดยไม่มี left brachiocephalic vein มาเชื่อมต่อระหว่างเส้นเลือดทั้งสอง ซึ่งเป็นการพบเป็นครั้งแรกในประเทศไทย จากลักษณะ และตำแหน่งทางกายวิภาคศาสตร์ของหลอดเลือดทั้งสอง รวมทั้งการที่ตรวจไม่พบความผิดปกติ ที่เกี่ยวกับ cardiac output, right atrial pressure อัตราการเต้นของหัวใจและไม่พบ arrhythmia และ murmur จึงน่าจะเป็นไปได้ว่าเส้นเลือดทั้งสองสามารถทำหน้าที่นำเลือด ดำกลับเข้าสู่หัวใจห้องบนขวาได้ตามปกติ
