The Compliance-Seeking Process From The Perspective Of The Respondent: The Role Of Goals In Responses To Requests., Barbara L. Woods Jan 1997

The Compliance-Seeking Process From The Perspective Of The Respondent: The Role Of Goals In Responses To Requests., Barbara L. Woods

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined compliance seeking from the perspective of recipients of direct requests with respect to types of responses, goals, liking, and locus of control. A total of 211 employed adults completed a survey that included responses to hypothetical request scenarios involving liked and disliked co-workers, measures of goals factors, and a measure of locus of control. Six types of responses were identified: simple agreement, elaborated agreement, simple refusal, refusal with reasons, request more information, and postpone decision. Participants reported a tendency to agree with requests, regardless of liking. Factor analyses revealed three-factor models for the liked and disliked conditions. …

The Effects Of Hypoestrogenism On Rest And Acute Submaximal Exercise Metabolism Using A Gnrh Agonist Analogue Model., Sheri Anne Melton Jan 1997

The Effects Of Hypoestrogenism On Rest And Acute Submaximal Exercise Metabolism Using A Gnrh Agonist Analogue Model., Sheri Anne Melton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During menopause, many women experience weight gain which is mostly in the form of abdominal and upper body fat deposition. This phenomenon has been recognized as an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease in females. Other disease processes, such as diabetes, hypertension and some cancers, specifically, breast and esophageal have been linked to obesity. Thus, the occurrence of increased body fat is placing the postmenopausal female in jeopardy of a potential life-threatening position. The connection between the lack of estrogen seen in menopause and weight gain remains unclear, but studies have shown that estrogen status may affect carbohydrate and fat metabolism. …

Cineole was phytotoxic against Rudbeckia at 17 ppm and Lactuca at 165 ppm. (S)-camphor was phytotoxic to Rudbeckia at 1 ppm, Lactuca at 28 ppm, and Leptochloa and Schizachyrium at 134 ppm. (R)-Camphor, myrtenol and myrtenal were phytotoxic against Rudbeckia at concentrations of 28, 25 and 15 ppm respectively. Farnesol stimulated the germination of Schizachyrium at concentrations up to 50 ppm and at 100 ppm it reduced the radicle length of all test species. Geraniol stimulated …

Cost Analysis And Air Pollution Impact Of Electric Vehicles On A Metropolitan Area., Hector David Arias-Varela Jan 1997

Cost Analysis And Air Pollution Impact Of Electric Vehicles On A Metropolitan Area., Hector David Arias-Varela

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During the 1990's, increasing attention has been paid to electric vehicles (EV's) because of their potential to reduce air pollution in metropolitan areas such as the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area in the U.S., Mexico City and Its Metropolitan Area in Mexico, Greater London in the United Kingdom and other urban areas. However, few studies to determine the costs and benefits of reducing air pollution by introducing EV's into these mega cities have been carried out. A model to determine the marginal costs and environmental impact of electric vehicles on a metropolitan area is designed in this study. The model simulates …

Interactive Effects Of Weeds And Defoliating Insects In Soybean (Glycine Max)., Charles Frost Grymes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of simulated insect defoliation and full season weed competition on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) growth and yield. Weeds were johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.), common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L.), and hemp sesbania (Sesbania exaltata (Raf.) Rybd. ex A. W. Hill) at 15, 3, and 12 plants/6 m of row. Simulated defoliation at R2 and R5 soybean growth stages was accomplished by removal of 0, 1, or 2 leaflets per soybean trifoliate, which approximated 0, 33, and 66% defoliation, respectively. Averaged across defoliation levels and stages, johnsongrass, common cocklebur, and hemp sesbania …

Reduction And Management Of Risks Associated With Aflatoxin And Fumonisin Contamination In Corn., Socrates Trujillo Jan 1997

Reduction And Management Of Risks Associated With Aflatoxin And Fumonisin Contamination In Corn., Socrates Trujillo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aflatoxins and fumonisins, secondary mold metabolites, occur naturally as co-contaminants in corn. Health and economic risks associated with this contamination of food and feed have been the focus of much research worldwide. Research programs resulting from the discovery of aflatoxins in the 1960's has been used to guide study programs for fumonisins. The establishment of food safety programs, including mycotoxin decontamination procedures, must be evaluated for further application. The evaluation of selected procedures which reduce the risks associated with the contamination of these mycotoxins in food utilized for human and animal consumption was the focus of this study. This study …

Reading Recovery has been successful in helping at-risk first-grade children accelerate and become successful readers and writers. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether or not Early Literacy Intervention Groups have any effect when used in conjunction with Reading Recovery. This study will examine the following questions: (1) How do Reading Recovery children without Early Literacy Intervention compare to those with this experience on entrance scores into the program? (2) How do Reading Recovery children without Early Literacy …

Educational Costs And Cost Recovery In Developing Countries: The Case Of Mali., Mohamed Cherif Diarra Jan 1997

Educational Costs And Cost Recovery In Developing Countries: The Case Of Mali., Mohamed Cherif Diarra

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study explores the basic types, major determinants, and behavioral characteristics of educational costs in developing countries in general, and higher education in particular in Mali for 1985-1996. A conceptual proposal of cost recovery in higher education consisting of three basic components--a tuition price, a student loan program, and a higher education payment package--is presented. Relationships among economic and human factors, and attitudes toward cost recovery are examined. An instrument was developed to test the feasibility of the cost recovery proposal through the perspectives of several stakeholder groups--students, parents, administrators, faculty, and legislators. The quantitative part of the study was …

New Developments In Portable Fast Gas Chromatography., Elena Ursula Ehrmann Jan 1997

New Developments In Portable Fast Gas Chromatography., Elena Ursula Ehrmann

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Currently commercially available portable gas chromatographs are suitable only for the analysis of volatile organic compounds, and do not include temperature programming capability. This dissertation presents the development of a novel direct at-column heater design and a pressure driven injection system that is compatible with semi-volatile analytes. The collinear and coaxial at-column heater designs incorporate heater and temperature sensing elements placed along the column. Resistive heating controls the column temperature via a feedback circuit and a software selected program. Linear temperature programming ramps up to 14$\sp\circ$C/s were obtained, with a total power consumption of less than 100 Watt. The accuracy …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The most recent Surgeon General's report underscores the need for increased levels of regular physical activity in the general population, and in women and minorities in particular. Variations in participation patterns in particular sports and physical activities may provide insight into the reasons for differing activity levels in women and minorities. The present investigation studied the influence of race and gender on activity choices by regarding specific sport and physical activities as self-defining for race and gender groups. Study 1 was designed to confirm the existence of self-schemata for sport and physical activities. A computer generated instrument was employed to …

Data Analysis Of The Allegro Gravitational Wave Detector., Evan Mauceli Jan 1997

Data Analysis Of The Allegro Gravitational Wave Detector., Evan Mauceli

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Allegro gravitational wave detector has been operational from 1991-1994, and 1996-present. We present a detailed description of the detector and the data acquisition system. Two distinct types of data analysis are detailed. First, we describe the search for burst sources of gravitational radiation. These are impulse forces acting on the bar, presumably from the stellar collapse associated with supernovae. Construction of the optimal filter for burst signals is described, as well as its application to the data from the detector. The uncertainties introduced into timing and signal strength estimates due to stationary noise are measured, giving the windows for …

This research was conducted to examine the following questions: (a) How did each child interact with reading/writing materials and with other readers and writers within the classroom? (b) how did the teacher interact with …

Modeling Hrm In Context: Examining The Role Of Human Resource Manager Discretion., Elyssa Blanton Schultz Jan 1997

Modeling Hrm In Context: Examining The Role Of Human Resource Manager Discretion., Elyssa Blanton Schultz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents a model focusing on human resource manager discretion and its role in influencing variations in HRM. Discretion, defined here as the latitude of action of human resource managers, is suggested as an important means of accounting for differing levels of constraint facing the HRM function. Because the model developed here focuses on discretion as a characteristic which is common to theories of choice and environmental determinism in organizational research, it is designed to stimulate future research that simultaneously considers predictions of HRM structure and content that have, to this point, been considered contradictory. In general, the results …

Complete Recycling Of Textile Components From Cotton/Polyester Blended Fabrics., Hyojung Kwon Jan 1997

Complete Recycling Of Textile Components From Cotton/Polyester Blended Fabrics., Hyojung Kwon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the study was to investigate the possibility of recycling textile components (especially cellulose) from cotton and polyester blended fabrics. The separation methods of intimately blended fibers developed were: (1) hydrolysis of polyester in NaOH solution or (2) dissolution of cotton in an N-methylmorpholine N-oxide monohydrate system. Complete separation was confirmed with thermal analytical methods such as differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis. These thermal methods were found to efficiently determine accurate fiber contents in cotton/polyester blends and in rayon/nylon 6,6 composite fibers. In the recycling process for cotton/polyester blends, a 4M NaOH solution at boiling …

Eighteen third-grade students were selected from two schools in the same school district. Half of the subjects spent their third grade year in a two-way bilingual educational program while the other half were mainstreamed into a submersion education program. Each subject was culturally (Hispanic) and linguistically (Spanish was the dominant language) different from mainstream students. A qualitative summary and statistical analyses …

Managing Oregon’S Aquatic Resources : A Dynamic Segmentation Application, Keith Andrew Hupperts Jan 1997

Managing Oregon’S Aquatic Resources : A Dynamic Segmentation Application, Keith Andrew Hupperts

Dissertations and Theses

Many of Oregon's salmon, the cultural icon of the region, are imperil. Salmon runs ranging from the Snake River to the Oregon coast, from chinook to coho to steelhead to cut-throat are being protected or candidates for protection under the federal Endangered Species Act of 1973. As Oregon's salmon decline natural resource agencies, such as Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), are seeing substantial funding cutbacks. In order to compensate for lost personnel and rising work-loads, ODFW is increasingly turning to new technologies, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This thesis describes the creation of a dynamic segmentation GIS …

Protecting And Promoting Wildlife And Habitat On State And Private Land In Washington's Arid Interior, Gregory A. Hicks

Articles

The object of this paper is to describe efforts now under way in the interior uplands of Washington State's Columbia Plain to restore and protect upland wildlife habitat and wildlife species in a busy and intensively used agricultural and range landscape. It is a landscape of greatly diminished ecological integrity, dominated by private land holdings, and where the remaining public lands are recovering from earlier periods of farming or grazing or still dedicated to productive use under lease or permit. Recent ecosystem assessments make clear that there are few areas of the Columbia Plain's original grass and shrub land which …

What Does The Client See? A Review Of Psychotherapists' Nonverbal Behavior, Iris Taber Jan 1997

What Does The Client See? A Review Of Psychotherapists' Nonverbal Behavior, Iris Taber

Modern Psychological Studies

Nonverbal communication between a psychotherapist and a mental health consumer is an extremely powerful tool in the course of psychotherapy. Clients generally assume therapists attend to their nonverbals but therapists may be unaware of the extent to which their nonverbals influence therapy. This paper examines the influence of the therapist's nonverbals on the therapeutic relationship. In research conducted by Davis & Hadiks (1994) using the Nonverbal Interaction and States Analysis (NISA), client and therapist movements were compared and rated on the same scale. These data indicated that body position patterns facilitated the development of rapport and self-disclosure in a therapy …

Minor Physical Anomalies: Modifiers Of Environmental Risk For Psychopathology, Daniel S. Pine, David Shaffer, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Mark Davies

Publications and Research

Tested the hypothesis that minor physical anomalies (MPAs) modify an adolescent's vulnerability to environmental risk factors for psychopathology. 118 male 17-yr-olds who had been evaluated as 7-year-olds received a comprehensive neuropsychiatric evaluation. The evaluation included standardized assessments of environmental risk factors for psychiatric impairment, neurological signs, IQ, MPAs, and psychiatric impairment. The relationship between psychiatric status and environmental risk was examined as a function of the MPA profile. There was a significant interaction between MPAs and environmental risk in predicting psychiatric status. Environmental risk was more predictive of psychiatric impairment at age 17 in Ss with high scores on the …

The Passive Virtues And The World Court: Pro-Dialogic Abstention By The International Court Of Justice, Antonio F. Perez Jan 1997

The Passive Virtues And The World Court: Pro-Dialogic Abstention By The International Court Of Justice, Antonio F. Perez

Scholarly Articles

Only a few years ago the International Court of Justiceseemed to be edging toward judicial activism. This article argues that in its most recent pronouncements the ICJ has instead employed a variety of techniques for abstention. The ICJ's use of this "arsenal of devices" recalls, however, Alexander Bickel's argument for the exercise of judicial restraint by the U.S. Supreme Court in a way that nonetheless allows the judicial organ to stimulate constitutional politics. In the recent contentious cases and advisory opinions concerning the status of East Timor, exploitation of the natural resources of Nauru, and a trilogy of nuclear testing …
