Challenging Futures: The Career And Life Decisions Of Managerial And Professional Women In Their 50s, Leonie V. Still, Wendy Timms
Research outputs pre 2011
The Australian Institute of Management in Western Australia has for many years been very supportive of women in management, and in particular has encouraged the growth and development of our Women in Management Special Interest Group. The Institute has also played its small, but hopefully, significant role in helping to redress the gender imbalance in the management profession with the creation of its Excellence in Management Award for Women, which is now in its sixth year. This Award is significant in that it helps to clearly identify women who have excelled in their management career and it also provides some …

Does Time Make Ancient Good Uncouth?, John W. Reed

The somewhat arch title of my remarks, which I'll explain later, came to me at the end of December, when all forms of the media were filled with references to the fast approaching turn of the calendar when we shall greet a twenty-first century and a third millennium. Whether it comes in with the year 2000, as popularly believed, or, more properly, the year 2001, it will be a time for reflection, for taking stock of ourselves and our world. Predictably, we already are inundated with pronouncements from pundits and politicians, from scientists and seers, from philosophers and fools. I …
The Interaction Of The Division Order And The Lease Royalty Clause., Laura H. Burney
The Interaction Of The Division Order And The Lease Royalty Clause., Laura H. Burney
St. Mary's Law Journal
Because lease royalty clauses, which establish the obligation of the lessee to pay royalties to the lessor, generally fail to include the details necessary to calculate a lessor’s royalty, lessee or third party purchasers historically have implemented a division order. An additional document in the payment process, the division order protects against a lessee or third party purchaser’s liability for conversion or failure to account properly. Recent court of appeals and Supreme Court of Texas opinions provide an analysis of the interaction of the lease royalty clause and the division order under Texas statutory and case law. The awkward wording …
The Prospects For Challenging U.S. Nuclear Weapons Policy In Light Of The World Court's Advisory Opinion On The Legality Of The Threat Or Use Of Such Weapons Comment., Stephen Gordon
St. Mary's Law Journal
In an opinion, the World Court concluded “the threat or use of nuclear weapons would generally be contrary to the rules of international law,” the only exception being “in an extreme circumstance of self-defense, where survival of a State is at stake.” The Court’s opinion could read as prohibiting the most common ways the United States incorporated nuclear weapons into its defense strategy. First, it may prevent the United States from using such weapons again legally. Second, if the opinion does not render using nuclear weapons illegal in all circumstances, it might prohibit the United States from ever being the …
Immigration Reform: Seeking The Right Reasons., Lamar Smith, Edward R. Grant
Immigration Reform: Seeking The Right Reasons., Lamar Smith, Edward R. Grant
St. Mary's Law Journal
The legacy of immigration to the United States permeates the debate over current immigration policy. Because our self-definition as a nation is at stake in this debate, the issue of immigration arouses our deepest sentiments regarding the communities in which we live. We do not need to search far back in our history to find examples of imprudent law-making. Both the 1924 and 1925 immigration laws were motivated in large part by purposes which eventually undermined the principles on which they rested. These acts serve as prime examples of how employing erroneous reasons to enact even well-intentioned laws can be …
Writing In The Margins: Brennan, Marshall, And The Inherent Weaknesses Of Liberal Judicial Decision-Making Essay., Donna F. Coltharp
Writing In The Margins: Brennan, Marshall, And The Inherent Weaknesses Of Liberal Judicial Decision-Making Essay., Donna F. Coltharp
St. Mary's Law Journal
From 1967, when Thurgood Marshall took his seat as Supreme Court Justice, until 1990, when William Brennan, Jr. vacated his seat, the two Justices formed one of the most consistent liberal voting blocs in the history of the Court. Both Justices were judicial activists who labored in the tradition of Legal Realism. Although both Brennan and Marshall recognized the interpretation and application of the law as purposeful exercises, they differed in their approach to the task. Marshall, for instance, appealed to social consensus stating that his views were supported by society. Furthermore, Marshall strongly believed that the Constitution is a …
Abandoned Frozen Embryos And Texas Law Of Abandoned Personal Property: Should There Be A Connection Comment., Lynne M. Thomas
Abandoned Frozen Embryos And Texas Law Of Abandoned Personal Property: Should There Be A Connection Comment., Lynne M. Thomas
St. Mary's Law Journal
In vitro fertilization (“IVF”) has become almost commonplace in society. The widespread utilization of IVF and cryopreservation raises new questions with respect to ownership and disposition of embryos. This legal confusion may be addressed by either crafting specific regulations for that particular technology as its implications become apparent, or by applying current law. IVF first began in Great Britain, and the British Parliament passed a law mandating destruction of abandoned frozen embryos five years after cryopreservation. Destruction of the embryos potentially caused the loss of reproduction capability for those persons whose embryos were destroyed. While the number of abandoned frozen …

Prejudice Toward Fat People: The Development And Validation Of The Antifat Attitudes Test, Robin J. Lewis, Thomas F. Cash, Lora Jacobi, Cristina Bubb-Lewis
Psychology Faculty Publications
Although the stigma of obesity in our society is well documented, the measurement of antifat attitudes has been a difficult undertaking, Two studies were conducted to construct and validate the Antifat Attitudes Test (AFAT), In study 1, college students (110 men and 175 women) completed the preliminary 54-item AFAT and specific indices of body image and weight-related concerns, Psychometric and factor analysis revealed a 47-item composite scale and three internally consistent factors that were uncorrelated with social desirability: Social/Character Disparagement, Physical/Romantic Unattractiveness, and Weight Control/Blame. Several body image correlates of antifat prejudice were identified, and men expressed more negative attitudes …
Performance Of Composite Piping Systems: Thermal, Fire Endurance, And Joining Characteristics., Michael Andre Stubblefield
Performance Of Composite Piping Systems: Thermal, Fire Endurance, And Joining Characteristics., Michael Andre Stubblefield
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Composite piping systems are becoming the "System of Choice" in many applications previously the domain of metallic piping systems. For full acceptability and usage of these composite piping systems, new innovative approaches must be developed. Three areas of development are addressed; (i) thermal efficiency, (ii) fire endurance, and (iii) joining techniques. In the development of the energy conserving composite pipe, the thermal contact resistance acts as an additional insulating layer. A model and device to predict and measure the contact resistance for a pipe system has been developed. A corrugated layer, which acts as an enhanced contact resistance layer, forms …
Evaluation Of Sampling Gear For Predicting Harvest Size, Yield And Incidence Of Stunting In Crawfish Ponds., Jimmy Lee Avery
Evaluation Of Sampling Gear For Predicting Harvest Size, Yield And Incidence Of Stunting In Crawfish Ponds., Jimmy Lee Avery
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Dip-nets, test traps and experimental drop samplers were evaluated for their potential to predict crawfish (Procambarus spp.) yields and size distribution at harvest. Field studies were conducted at the Rice Research Station, LSU Agricultural Center, Crowley, Louisiana, between 1991 and 1996 in 82 (0.16-0.2 ha) earthen impoundments. Fields were managed to simulate rice-crawfish systems typical of the southwestern and south-central Louisiana. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship among catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) of sampling gear (alone and in combination) with respect to yield in weight (kg/ha), yield in number (crawfish/ha) and size distribution at harvest. Relative abundance of …
Integrated Pest Management Tactics For Control Of Cabbage Looper And Diamondback Moth In Cabbage., Paul Wesley Ivey
Integrated Pest Management Tactics For Control Of Cabbage Looper And Diamondback Moth In Cabbage., Paul Wesley Ivey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Population density estimates, yield data, damage rating, and marketability of cabbage were used to assess the effectiveness of integrating several control tactics--an action threshold, host plant resistance, intercropping (companion planting), microbial control, and pesticide use reduction--for managing the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.), and the cabbage looper (CL), Trichoplusia ni (Hubner), in cabbage and in protecting beneficial arthropods. An action threshold of six DBM larvae per plant was inadequate for making insecticide application decisions because cabbage plots treated based on this action threshold had significantly higher densities of CL and DBM larvae, higher damage rating and yield loss, and …

Rickettsia Felis, A Newly Discovered Rickettsia Associated With The Cat Flea (Ctenocephalides Felis Bouche)., Jimmy Wedincamp Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A study was performed to determine the life cycle of Rickettsia felis, a novel bacterium associated with cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis Bouche). Cat flea populations maintain R. felis in successive generations by efficient transovarial transmission. Transovarial transmission was demonstrated in our study up to 12 generations. The mean infection rate for the progeny of fleas maintained on both cats and an artificial membrane system were comparable (64.3% and 58% respectively). Cats with no prior exposure to fleas were exposed to fleas infected with Rickettsia felis and monitored monthly for seroconversion via IFA. Blood samples were assayed for the presence of …
