Development Of A Muslim Religiosity Scale, Abdulaziz Abdurrahman Albelaikhi Jan 1997

Development Of A Muslim Religiosity Scale, Abdulaziz Abdurrahman Albelaikhi

Open Access Dissertations

The main focus of the study was the construction of a new scale for measuring religiosity among Muslims. Two other existing scales were also used. Utilizing 169 (108 male, 61 female) Saudi Arabian Muslim college students, an exploratory Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was employed on a set of questionnaire items intended to measure Islamic religiosity. Six components were extracted, which represented the religious dimensions of practice, societal value of religion, belief in central tenets, personal need for religion, reliance on practical guidance, and unquestioning acceptance.

Predictions regarding multidimensionality of Muslim religiosity were generally supported. However, the PCA-based scales developed in …

Electrophysiological Effects Of Lysoplasmenylcholine On Rabbit Ventricular Myocytes, Ray Caldwell Jan 1997

Electrophysiological Effects Of Lysoplasmenylcholine On Rabbit Ventricular Myocytes, Ray Caldwell

Theses and Dissertations

Myocardial ischemia activates a phospholipase A2 that targets plasmalogen phospholipids and liberates 1-0-alkenyl-Iysoplasmenylcholine (LPLC) in preference to 1-0- acyl-Iysophosphatidylcholine (LPC). Although LPC is a pro arrhythmic ischemic metabolite, the effect of LPLC on cardiac electrophysiology is unknown. At the lowest doses investigated, LPLC induced spontaneous contractions in otherwise quiescent rabbit ventricular myocytes significantly faster than LPC. Spontaneous contractions developed with median times of 16.4 (n = 64), 27.4 (n = 36), and >60 min (n = 25) during exposure to 5, 2.5, and 1 JlM LPLC compared with 38.0 (n = 48) and >60 min (n = 29) for 5 …

The purpose of this thesis was to examine the critical thinking skills six Year 7 students used and developed while working on an Multimedia Information System, Encarta. The students' verbal interactions were recorded on audio tapes as they worked cooperatively in their groups. These interactions were transcribed and a content analysis technique was used to identify and calculate critical thinking indicator ratios. The content analysis was supported by field notes and students' word processed responses. The results show that students in both groups collectively did engage in critical thinking, particularly with regards to the indicators, Importance, Linking Ideas and Critical …

The Commodification Of Caring : A Hospice Case Study, Tina Marie Alford Williams Jan 1997

The Commodification Of Caring : A Hospice Case Study, Tina Marie Alford Williams

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This paper discusses the process of commodification by a non-profit hospice as seen through informants and participant observation. The objective was to describe how an all-volunteer organization could transform into a business when reimbursement was introduced into the exchange equation, why it happened, and the effects the change had on the people involved. What emerged from the interpretations was a detailed description of the commodification process in four areas: a) the emphasis of the money factor in the delivery of care, b) a shift to high-tech care and sicker patients, c) a calling and its relationship to non-profit work, and …

Book Review - Lost Landscapes And Failed Economies, Tom Vetter Jan 1997

Book Review - Lost Landscapes And Failed Economies, Tom Vetter

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In an intensive and methodical manner, Power casts doubt upon notions of environmental protection choking economic development. He demonstrates the fallacy of such a position and successfully advocates environmental protection as economically sound. The confusion that exists between the environment and the economy is largely the result of misguided convention.

Runoff Quality Responses To Cattle-Gazing Strategy And Grassed Buffer Zone Length, Dwayne R. Edwards, Brian T. Larsen, Teng T. Lim Jan 1997

Runoff Quality Responses To Cattle-Gazing Strategy And Grassed Buffer Zone Length, Dwayne R. Edwards, Brian T. Larsen, Teng T. Lim

KWRRI Research Reports

Grazed pastures represent a source of potential nonpoint pollution. In comparison to other nonpoint sources (e.g., row-cropped lands), relatively little information exists regarding possible magnitudes of pollution from grazed pasture; how that pollution is affected by weather, soil, management and other variables; and how the pollution can be minimized. The objective of this study was to assess how the quality of runoff from simulated grazed pasture is influenced by grazing duration (4-12 weeks), grazing strategy (no grazing, conventional grazing and rotational grazing), and by the use of grassed buffer strips (ranging in length from O to 18.3 m) installed down-slope …

Respect For The Bioethical Dilemmas - The Case Of Physician-Assisted Suicide, Sixty-Fifth Cleveland-Marshall Fund Lecture, John A. Robertson Jan 1997

Respect For The Bioethical Dilemmas - The Case Of Physician-Assisted Suicide, Sixty-Fifth Cleveland-Marshall Fund Lecture, John A. Robertson

Cleveland State Law Review

In this lecture I begin an exploration of the role that respect for human life plays in contemporary bioethics. Although many bioethical dilemmas could be chosen to illustrate this role, I will focus on the case of physician-assisted suicide. This lecture emphasizes the role that respect for human life plays in arbitrating bioethical disputes that involve physician-assisted suicide. I hope to develop some generalizations about how respect for life and autonomy, beneficence and other values interact and thus constitute or define what respect for life means for us. Part I discusses assisted suicide and the ban against actively killing. Part …

A Switch To Family Centered Practice, Rosemarie Michaelis Jan 1997

A Switch To Family Centered Practice, Rosemarie Michaelis

Honors Capstones

Research has been done to explore the development and advantages of family based practices. However, not enough research has been done to evaluate how to switch from a medically oriented approach to a more family based format in report writing. This study evaluates the importance of family oriented clinical early intervention reports (CARs) through comparison of the comprehension of non-professionals to speech and language evaluations. In this paper, the author will discuss the history of client - clinician relationships, importance of family oriented reports, and strategies for developing a family oriented CAR.

The Impact Of Enterprise-Wide Software On Organizational Performance, Ingrid D. Brandt Jan 1997

The Impact Of Enterprise-Wide Software On Organizational Performance, Ingrid D. Brandt

Honors Capstones

Enterprise-wide software solutions are one of the latest trends, especially in the U.S. Many U.S. firms that operate on a global scale need this kind of integrated solution in order to compete globally. The boom in the computer industry has spurred the creation of hundreds, if not thousands of firms -- each in different areas and niches to support the industry'S growth. There are dozens of firms specializing in the development of enterprise-wide software, and just as many if not more, consulting firms (including all of the big six accounting firms) specializing in the implementation of these solutions.
