Linking Genes With Behavior: The Social And Legal Implications Of Using Genetic Evidence In Criminal Trials, Carol A. Gaudet

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Note surveys the increasingly problematic issue of using genetic information in legal decision making. This Note concludes that genetic evidence should be admissible during both the guilt or innocence phases and the penalty phases of criminal trials because it improves the trial process by enhancing juries' understanding of the defendant's intentions during the commission of their crimes.

Social Interaction And Play Styles: A Comparison Of Well And Chronically Ill Preschoolers, Tonya L. Saunders

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The study compares the differences in social interaction and play styles among children with chronic illness to those of well children. The sample consists of 34 children between the ages of three and five years. Subjects were recruited from local Head Start centers and outpatient clinics and participated on a volunteer basis. Seven subjects included children who had been diagnosed with some type of chronic illness (e.g. asthma, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or spina bifida). The remaining twenty-seven subjects were children who had never been diagnosed with a chronic illness. Parents of all children completed questionnaires investigating variations that exist among …

Replication And Segregation Of A Minif Plasmid During The Division Cycle Of Escherichia Coli, Charles E. Helmstetter, Maureen P. Thornton, Ping Zhou, Joseph A. Bogan, Alan C. Leonard, Julia E. Grimwade Jan 1997

Replication And Segregation Of A Minif Plasmid During The Division Cycle Of Escherichia Coli, Charles E. Helmstetter, Maureen P. Thornton, Ping Zhou, Joseph A. Bogan, Alan C. Leonard, Julia E. Grimwade

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

Replication of the miniF plasmid pML31 was examined during the division cycle of Escherichia coli growing with doubling times between 40 and 90 min at 37°C and compared to the replication of plasmid pBR322 and the minichromosome pAL70. The replication pattern of pML31 was indistinguishable from that of pBR322 at all growth rates and very different from the cell- cycle-specific replication of the minichromosome. It is concluded that both pML31 and pBR322 plasmids can replicate at all stages of the division cycle, with a probability of replication that increases gradually, but perhaps nut exponentially, during the cycle. In contrast, the …

The 1990 Virginia Indoor Clean Air Act : A Case Study In Public Interest Lobbying, Louise Ryland Thornton Jan 1997

The 1990 Virginia Indoor Clean Air Act : A Case Study In Public Interest Lobbying, Louise Ryland Thornton

Master's Theses

This thesis compares and contrasts the tactics and techniques used by Virginia public interest lobbyists in the passage of the 1990 VIRGINIA INDOOR CLEAN AIR ACT with Alan Rosenthal's analysis of state legislative lobbying found in his book, THE THIRD HOUSE. Primary sources include personal interviews and legislative documents, while newspaper articles provide the secondary source of information. Lobbyists used the indirect and direct lobbying techniques, suggested in Rosenthal's framework, to persuade others to their point of view. Supporters of the CLEAN AIR BILL had to deviate, in part, from some of Rosenthal's direct lobbying strategies due to Virginia's history …

Role Of Egr-1 Gene Expression In B Cell Receptor-Induced Apoptosis In An Immature B Cell Lymphoma, Subramanian Muthukkumar, Seong-Su Han, Sumathi Muthukkumar, Vivek M. Rangnekar, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Ligation of B cell receptor (BCR) on BKS-2, an immature B cell lymphoma by anti-IgM antibodies (Ab) caused apoptosis. Here we report that signaling through B cell receptor in wild type BKS-2 cells down-regulated the expression of Egr-1, a zinc finger-containing transcription factor. A reduction in the level of Egr-1 mRNA could be demonstrated as early as 30 min after the ligation of BCR on BKS-2 cells. Immunocytochemical and Western blot analysis revealed that the expression of EGR-1 protein was also inhibited by anti-IgM treatment. Antisense oligonucleotides to Egr-1 caused growth inhibition and apoptosis in BKS-2 cells, suggesting that expression …

Effects Of Training And Contact On Decreasing Ageism In Mental Health Professionals, Kristen Lyn Nachtmann Jan 1997

Effects Of Training And Contact On Decreasing Ageism In Mental Health Professionals, Kristen Lyn Nachtmann

Theses

Advances in research on attitudes towards older adults can productively be applied to the problem of professional ageism. In this study a group of 50 mental health professionals ranging in age from 19-65 with 21 being male and 29 being female responded to a questionnaire entitled Aging Opinion Survey. This survey requested the subjects' opinions concerning three topics: stereotypic decrement, personal anxiety towards aging, and social value of the elderly. This was matched with their level of training in gerontology and contact with this population. ln general, subjects with higher levels of contact and training had a more positive opinion …

Motivating And Leading Today's Workforce, Janet Brown-Mitchell

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of motivation tactics used by American companies in reaching their two most important goals - goals which are one, to grow and expand by increasing profits and two, to stay in business.

Organizations are finding that they cannot survive and prosper merely by laying off employees and restructuring . Events are unraveling at a dramatic pace, and businesses are no longer able to compete globally.

Companies must begin to think long term if they are to meet their goals. Downsizing and restructuring are resulting in poor employee morale, and reduction of quality in …

Children Are Losing Maryland's "Tender Years" War, Lynn Mclain

University of Baltimore Law Review

Often times, the child is the only witness. Yet age may make the child incompetent to testify in court... "[W]hen the choice is between evidence which is less than best and no evidence at all, only clear folly would dictate an across-the board policy of doing without."

Legislating Virtue: How Segregationists Disguised Racial Discrimination As Moral Reform Following Brown V. Board Of Education, Anders Walker

All Faculty Scholarship

Shortly after the Supreme Court of the United States invalidated school segregation in Brown v. Board of Education,[1] Mississippi Circuit Judge Tom P. Brady [2] delivered a speech to a chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution on the decision’s consequences. Brady’s speech, later published and popularized throughout the South,[3] declared that the ruling’s ultimate goal was not educational equality, but racial amalgamation:[4]

Let’s get one thing unmistakably clear, the leaders of the three million block-voting negroes of the North and East and of California, together with segments of the Communist-front organizations of our population, have set as their …

Messenger As The Medium Of Communication: The Use Of Interpreters In Mediation, The, Ileana Dominguez-Urban Jan 1997

Messenger As The Medium Of Communication: The Use Of Interpreters In Mediation, The, Ileana Dominguez-Urban

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Merely adding one more person to the mediation process adds greater complexity to the dynamics of the mediation than most lawyers and mediators would anticipate. As Part I of this article indicates, mediators must understand the complexities of interpreted mediation because the need for interpreted mediation is increasing due to national demographics, legal requirements, and international market forces. Part II examines the skills needed for interpretation and the probable structure of an interpreted mediation. Part III considers who might possess those interpretation skills as well as the additional skills required of one who will serve as an auxiliary to the …

Policing Corporate Crime: The Dilemma Of Internal Compliance Programs, Michael Goldsmith, Chad W. King Jan 1997

Policing Corporate Crime: The Dilemma Of Internal Compliance Programs, Michael Goldsmith, Chad W. King

Vanderbilt Law Review

In recent years, federal and state laws have sought to promote good corporate citizenship by encouraging business entities to establish internal compliance programs designed to avoid-or at least detect-illicit conduct. The most significant impetus toward effective internal corporate policing occurred in 1991, when the United States Sentencing Guidelines (Sentencing Guidelines) made the existence of an "effective" internal compliance program the sine qua non for receiving leniency upon conviction. As a result, corporations nationwide have sought to establish compliance programs that qualify for preferred treatment under federal law. Such programs, however, have produced an unanticipated dilemma for many businesses: when a …
