Family Context And Premarital Sexual Activity In Kinshasa, Zaire., Yanyi Kasongo Djamba Jan 1997

Family Context And Premarital Sexual Activity In Kinshasa, Zaire., Yanyi Kasongo Djamba

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies on sexual behavior in Africa have shown that the proportion of women with premarital sexual experience is high, but the factors associated with premarital sexual behavior have not been clearly identified. This is partly due to the separation between theory and research. This study attempts to fill this gap by constructing a new conceptual framework in which hypotheses of rational adaptation, social disorganization, and patrilineal bias theories can be empirically tested. Based on a life history approach, the present framework emphasizes the role of three dimensions of family background in shaping individual behavior: financial capital, human capital, and social …

Predictors Of Postconcussion Symptomatology In A Mild Head Injury College Population., Laurie M. Ryan Jan 1997

Predictors Of Postconcussion Symptomatology In A Mild Head Injury College Population., Laurie M. Ryan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mild head injury is the most common form of head injury and the majority of individuals who sustain such injuries are young adults. Following mild head injury, individuals often complain of a number of physical, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms referred to as postconcussion symptoms (PCS). The most commonly reported postconcussion symptoms are headache, dizziness, decreased concentration, memory problems, irritability, fatigue, visual disturbances, sensitivity to noise, judgement problems, and anxiety. These symptoms can persist from months to years following injury and may even be permanent and cause disability (Brown, Fann, & Grant, 1994; Gouvier, Cubic, Jones, Brantley, and Cutlip, 1992). Both …

Use Of Informal And Formal Service By Noninstitutionalized Elderly Who Need Assistance., Lih-Yun Chen Jan 1997

Use Of Informal And Formal Service By Noninstitutionalized Elderly Who Need Assistance., Lih-Yun Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purposes of this study were to examine where elderly people obtained assistance for Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and for Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs), to explore the relationship between the types of support system the elderly used and selected variables, and to formulate a conceptual model to explain and predict the use of informal or formal service in elderly assistance. The hierarchial-compensatory model and the complementary model were examined. Both models were supported by parts of the findings. A random sample of 263 noninstitutionalized elderly was interviewed from five Labor Market Areas in Louisiana. Only those who …

Southern Families And Their Daughters: The Self And The System In Selected Texts By Grau, Gilchrist, Welty, Spencer, And Douglas., Jo K. Galle Jan 1997

Southern Families And Their Daughters: The Self And The System In Selected Texts By Grau, Gilchrist, Welty, Spencer, And Douglas., Jo K. Galle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this interdisciplinary study, I apply the materials of family systems theory to the study of five twentieth-century literary texts, each written by a Southern white woman. Arranged in the order they will appear in this study, the five texts are The Keepers of the House (1964) by Shirley Ann Grau; Net of Jewels (1992) by Ellen Gilchrist; The Golden Apples (1949) by Eudora Welty; The Voice at the Back Door (1956) by Elizabeth Spencer; and Can't Quit You, Baby (1988) by Ellen Douglas. In the analysis of these books--all examples of domestic and social realism--I analyze and measure the …

A Case-Ready Modified-Atmosphere Packaging System For Beef., Brian Scott Smith Jan 1997

A Case-Ready Modified-Atmosphere Packaging System For Beef., Brian Scott Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Beef tenderness and color stability were evaluated in conventional and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) systems. Equal portions of inside rounds removed immediately (PM0) or at 48 h postmortem (PM48) were vacuum packaged (VP) whole or cut into steaks and packaged in 80%N$\sb2$:20%CO$\sb2$ MAP. On day 12, MAP environments were exchanged for 80%O$\sb2$:20%CO$\sb2$. Calpastatin activity was lower at 2 d postmortem for PM48 steaks than PM0 steaks. Electrophoresis indicated more degradation of 50 and $>$250 kDA compounds at 2 d postmortem for PM48 than PM0 steaks. Steaks from PM48 required less shear force than PM0 steaks. HunterLab 'L', 'a' and …

Indicator Bacteria Concentrations Of Two Northwest Arkansas Streams In Relation To Flow And Season, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark S. Coyne, Tommy C. Daniel, P. F. Vendrell, J. F. Murdoch, P. A. Moore Jr. Jan 1997

Indicator Bacteria Concentrations Of Two Northwest Arkansas Streams In Relation To Flow And Season, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark S. Coyne, Tommy C. Daniel, P. F. Vendrell, J. F. Murdoch, P. A. Moore Jr.

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Concentrations of indicator bacteria such as fecal coliform (FC) and fecal streptococcus (FS) are often used to assess the suitability of waters for their intended use(s) and to allocate resources for water quality improvement measures. There is evidence, however, that concentrations of FC and FS can be influenced by variables such as season and flow rate during sampling, which could lead to biased results. The objective of this study was to assess the impacts of season and flow rate on concentrations of FC and FS. Fecal indicator bacteria concentrations were measured for approximately three years at five sites on two …

A Randomized Clinical Trial To Compare Selective Posterior Rhizotomy Plus Physiotherapy With Physiotherapy Alone In Children With Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy, Paul Steinbok, Ann M. Reiner, Richard Beauchamp, Robert Armstrong, Douglas Cochrane Jan 1997

A Randomized Clinical Trial To Compare Selective Posterior Rhizotomy Plus Physiotherapy With Physiotherapy Alone In Children With Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy, Paul Steinbok, Ann M. Reiner, Richard Beauchamp, Robert Armstrong, Douglas Cochrane

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

A randomized controlled single-blind trial was performed to compare lumbo-sacral selective posterior rhizotomy (SPR) followed by intensive physiotherapy, with intensive physiotherapy alone in improving motor function in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. Fifteen patients were randomly assigned to each treatment modality. Patients in the SPR group had rhizotomy within 1 month, followed by intensive outpatient physiotherapy for 9 months. Patients assigned to physiotherapy alone had identical intensive physiotherapy. There was a statistically significant and clinically important difference in improvement in motor function in favor of the SPR group, with a mean increase in total Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) …

Slamming Shut The Ark Doors: Congress's Attack On The Listing Process Of The Endangered Species Act, Jeffrey S. Kopf Jan 1997

Slamming Shut The Ark Doors: Congress's Attack On The Listing Process Of The Endangered Species Act, Jeffrey S. Kopf

Animal Law Review

The 104th Congress legislated a complete moratorium on the listing of species and critical habitat under the Endangered Species Act. Mr. Kopf explores the motivations behind the moratorium and shows how market forces may further weaken the ESA. This article questions whether the moratorium and its subsequent repeal signal a new era of environmental awareness or a return to industry's discreet manipulation of the legislative process.

Midwestern Geology And Cornell College: The First 125 Years, Gene E. Hinman, Paul L. Garvin Jan 1997

Midwestern Geology And Cornell College: The First 125 Years, Gene E. Hinman, Paul L. Garvin

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The history of geology at Cornell College can be traced back almost to the college's beginnings. Though not the first to reach geology at Cornell, William Harmon Norton, more than any other person, shaped the Department of Geology and set it on its course of excellence. Born in 1856, the son of a Methodist minister, Norton developed an ardent interest in geology in his boyhood. A graduate of Cornell in Classics, Norton was hired by his alma mater in 1876 to reach Greek, bur his avocation was geology. He spent most of his spare time on weekends and during summers …

Book Review - The End Of Science: Facing The Limits Of Knowledge, David Lopatto Jan 1997

Book Review - The End Of Science: Facing The Limits Of Knowledge, David Lopatto

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The June, 1997 issue of Harper's Magazine included a list of recently published books that have titles beginning with "The End of". There are thirty-one titles on the list. Publishers have been rushing to cash in on the public's emotional reaction to the coming end of the century. It is difficult to take some of these works seriously. Perhaps the hardest thesis to swallow is that science, including physics, chemistry, biology, and neuroscience, not to mention the social sciences and the philosophy of science, is coming to an end just as our somewhat arbitrary calendar ticks over to a new …

Characterization Of Congenic Fv-2(Ss) And Fv-2(Rr) Mice With Respect To Nucleotide Sequence Of Erythropoietin Receptor And Disease Production By A Variant Rb Virus, Subimal Basu Jan 1997

Characterization Of Congenic Fv-2(Ss) And Fv-2(Rr) Mice With Respect To Nucleotide Sequence Of Erythropoietin Receptor And Disease Production By A Variant Rb Virus, Subimal Basu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The envelope glycoprotein gp52, of Friend spleen focus-forming virus (F-SFFV) is responsible for the disease induced in mice by Friend virus (FV), which is a complex of F-SFFV and Friend murine leukemia virus (F-MuLV). The murine Fv-2 gene controls the susceptibility to F-SFFV infection. Mice resistant at the Fv-2 locus can rarely be infected with the wild-type F-SFFV. The viruses isolated from resistant FV-induced diseased mice have an altered envelope glycoprotein. It has been demonstrated that interaction between gp52 and erythropoietin receptor (EpoR) is required for the disease production in mice. Furthermore, it has been postulated that Fv-2 gene modifies …

Reinvigorating Autonomy: Freedom And Responsibility In The Supreme Court's First Amendment Jurisprudence, Christina E. Wells Jan 1997

Reinvigorating Autonomy: Freedom And Responsibility In The Supreme Court's First Amendment Jurisprudence, Christina E. Wells

Faculty Publications

Part I of this Article explores the conception of autonomy that scholars have generally attributed to the Court and discusses problems with that conception. Part II sets forth an alternative, Kantian conception of autonomy and discusses its implications for a system of laws regulating free expression. Part III analyzes the Court's free speech jurisprudence and its autonomy rationale. It specifically examines both the Court's distinction between content-based and content-neutral regulations of speech and its approach to low-value speech, demonstrating that they reflect a Kantian notion of autonomy. Finally, Part IV discusses the implications of Kantian autonomy for hate speech regulation, …
