University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

A newly-recognized disease that causes swollen eyelids and weepy eyes in house finches was confirmed in Nebraska in 1996 and has been observed as far west as McCook. Other symptoms of this emerging disease include wet, matted feathers around the eyelids and face, weight loss, fluffed feathers, inactivity, loss of sight, and eventual death in some affected birds. This disease, caused by a strain of the bacteria-like organism Mycoplasma gallisepticum, was first observed in several mid-Atlantic and eastern states in 1994. It has now spread to Canada, all of the eastern and Midwestern United States, and as far west as …

Rp97-362 File It Easy, Find It Fast: A Home Filing System, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

A home filing system makes important papers readily available when needed. If managed properly, the filing system can get older papers out of the way, making needed records more accessible.

A well-organized filing system for your household can pay big dividends when it comes time to find an important paper you need NOW. There is no one best filing system for everyone; what works for you could be a disaster for someone else. Once set up, a filing system helps you to be a more effective and efficient financial manager and decision maker.

Definite Confusion Over Likely Confusion, James W. Soong Jan 1997

Definite Confusion Over Likely Confusion, James W. Soong

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The U.S. circuit courts disagree on whether the likelihood of confusion determination in trademark law is a question of fact, law, or both. While the likelihood of confusion issue divides the circuits, scholarly commentary has been substantially uniform. Many legal commentators have argued that the likelihood of confusion determination should be deemed a question of fact for various reasons. In contrast, this Article proposes that the ultimate likelihood of confusion determination should be a question of law because of legal and policy considerations. This Article borrows the reasoning of recent Supreme Court precedent deciding that patent claim construction is a …

"Substantially Limited" Protection From Disability Discrimination: The Special Treatment Model And Misconstructions Of The Definition Of Disability, Robert Burgdorf Jan 1997

"Substantially Limited" Protection From Disability Discrimination: The Special Treatment Model And Misconstructions Of The Definition Of Disability, Robert Burgdorf

Journal Articles

DISABILITY' nondiscrimination laws, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA),2 and the disability rights movement which spawned them have, at their core, a central premise that is both simple and profound. That premise is that people denominated as "disabled" are just people, not different in any critical way from other people. Paradoxically, commentators, enforcement agencies and the courts, with manifest good intentions, have frequently interpreted and applied these laws in ways that reinforce a diametrically opposite premise-that people with disabilities are significantly different, special and need exceptional status and protection, One is reminded of Justice Brandeis's admonition …

Measuring The Public Realm: A Case Study, Emily Talen Jan 1997

Measuring The Public Realm: A Case Study, Emily Talen

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

New urbanism stresses the need to resurrect a more civic focus in town planning principles via the provision of public space ( Kunstler, 1996 ; Hochstein, 1994), a view based on …

Lawyers' Roles In Child Protection, Donald N. Duquette Jan 1997

Lawyers' Roles In Child Protection, Donald N. Duquette

Book Chapters

What roles and responsibilities do lawyers assume in civil child protection cases? As distinguished from other legal proceedings which may grow from a case of child maltreatment, civil child protection proceedings focus on the child and the child's needs. These civil cases are not concerned with punishing an offender, recovering money damages from a person or institution who may have harmed a child, or suspending someone from a professional license. The focus here is on the proper care and custody of the child.
