Environmental Quality As A National Good In A Federal State, Richard B. Stewart Jan 1997

Environmental Quality As A National Good In A Federal State, Richard B. Stewart

Faculty Articles

Adoption of new approaches to securing the national good of environmental quality will depend critically on the intermediaries who determine or influence how public demand for environmental quality is channeled into the design and implementation of concrete environmental policy measures. These intermediaries are political and policy entrepreneurs, the media, legislators, regulators and administrators, environmental groups, industry, and others. Many of these intermediaries have a strong vested interest in the existing centralized command and control system. Many will continue to try to use environmental regulation to extract rents or otherwise advance their interests. These realities must be taken into account in …

Effect Of Sulfate On The Release Rate Of Al3+ From Gibbsite In Low-Temperature Acidic Waters, Moira K. Ridley, David J. Wesolowski, Donald A. Palmer, Pascale Bénézeth, Richard Kettler Jan 1997

Effect Of Sulfate On The Release Rate Of Al3+ From Gibbsite In Low-Temperature Acidic Waters, Moira K. Ridley, David J. Wesolowski, Donald A. Palmer, Pascale Bénézeth, Richard Kettler

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Solubility experiments were performed at 5 °C by reacting 1 g of powdered gibbsite with 45 g of aqueous H2SO4-NaCl and HCl-NaCl (0.01 m H+) solutions at 0.1 m ionic strength. The kinetics of dissolution were monitored under extremely undersaturated conditions and appeared to favor a zero-order rate-determining process. The dissolution rate of gibbsite in the sulfate solution was approximately 10 times faster than in the HCl solution, which is consistent with trends reported in the literature for studies performed at higher temperatures. The enhanced dissolution kinetics of gibbsite (and by analogy, other aluminum-containing minerals) in …

Digestibility Of Dry-Rolled Corn, Wet Corn Gluten Feed, And Alfalfa Hay In Receiving And Finishing Diets, Rob Mccoy, Chris Richards, Tony Scott, Rick Stock, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Dan Herold

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Crude protein of wet corn gluten feed is degraded extensively in the rumen. Thus, protein supplementation is an important consideration when feeding wet corn gluten feed, especially in receiving diets.

Sites Other Than Nucleotide 234 Determine Cardiovirulence In Natural Isolates Of Coxsackievirus B3, Nora M. Chapman, Jose R. Romero, Mark A. Pallansch, Steven Tracy

United States Public Health Resources

The genetic site(s) that naturally determine the cardiovirulence phenotype of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) have yet to be mapped. Using two closely related CVB3 strains that differed in terms of cardiovirulence phenotype in mice, we previously reported the difference in phenotype mapped to a single site, nucleotide 234 (nt234) in the 58 non-translated region (NTR) of the CVB3 genome. When nt234 was C, the virus was attenuated and when U, the virus was cardiovirulent. To determine whether this finding was applicable to other strains of CVB3, we examined 13 different naturally occurring CVB3 strains isolated in different years in the United …

Trance (Tumor Necrosis Factor [Tnf]-Related Activation-Induced Cytokine), A New Tnf Family Member Predominantly Expressed In T Cells, Is A Dendritic Cell-Specific Survival Factor, Brian R. Wong, Régis Josien, Soo-Young Lee

Publications

TRANCE (tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-related activation-induced cytokine) is a new member of the TNF family that is induced upon T cell receptor engagement and activates c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) after interaction with its putative receptor (TRANCE-R). In addition, TRANCE expression is restricted to lymphoid organs and T cells. Here, we show that high levels of TRANCE-R are detected on mature dendritic cells (DCs) but not on freshly isolated B cells, T cells, or macrophages. Signaling by TRANCE-R appears to be dependent on TNF receptor-associated factor 2 (TRAF2), since JNK induction is impaired in cells from transgenic mice overexpressing a dominant …
