Rationale For Using Group Therapy With Couples Affected By Domestic Violence, Joyce C. Fehr Jan 1997

Rationale For Using Group Therapy With Couples Affected By Domestic Violence, Joyce C. Fehr

Graduate Research Papers

This paper defines battering and batterers, highlights some of the treatment interventions already in place for batterers, and provides a rationale for using couples group therapy for those people who choose to remain in a relationship after there has been at least one incidence of domestic violence resulting in the arrest of one of the partners. The paper describes what this type of group format might look like, and takes a look at the criticisms of couples group therapy and the cautions associated with such a group. Finally, this paper summarizes the future direction of domestic violence treatment.

Of 'Subtle Prejudices,' White Supremacy And Affirmative Action: A Reply To Paul Butler, Margaret E. Montoya Jan 1997

Of 'Subtle Prejudices,' White Supremacy And Affirmative Action: A Reply To Paul Butler, Margaret E. Montoya

Faculty Scholarship

I analyze the connection of affirmative action to two models of race and racism. I contend that the Supreme Court Justices who continue to support affirmative action adhere to a "prejudice" model in which race is a concept to be overcome and racism is merely a condition of individual ignorance. 13 On the other hand, I posit that Professor Butler's proposals fall within a "white supremacy" model, which looks at race as a historically contingent concept that has been used to subordinate non-white peoples from precolonial times through the present. This historical perspective offers the possibility that the concept of …

Restoring The Humanitarian Character Of U.S. Refugee Law: Lessons From The International Community, Jennifer Moore Jan 1997

Restoring The Humanitarian Character Of U.S. Refugee Law: Lessons From The International Community, Jennifer Moore

Faculty Scholarship

This response essay will first characterize UNHCR's role in the international protection of refugees, as a means of assessing the relevance of UNHCR's perspective to U.S. judicial decision-making in the area of asylum. The paper will then respond to each of the three problematic issues which Professor Fitzpatrick identifies in contemporary U.S. asylum law, by presenting, in each case, a broad proposition of international law which will then be substantiated with reference to relevant principles, guidelines and insights from the international refugee protection community of which UNHCR is a part. Finally, the essay's conclusion will offer a possible rationale for …

G97-1320 Feeding To Maximize Milk Solids, Rick J. Grant Jan 1997

G97-1320 Feeding To Maximize Milk Solids, Rick J. Grant

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes feeding guidelines to increase production of solids-corrected milk.

Proper feeding management of the dairy herd can improve the economy of production and provide for a healthier cow. Feeding to increase production of milk with maximum levels of milk fat and protein is essential for achieving these benefits.

Milk solid components include fat, protein, lactose, and minerals. Normal values for milk fat range from 3.7 percent (Holstein) to 4.9 percent (Jersey); milk protein ranges from 3.1 percent (Holstein) to 3.8 percent (Jersey). Lactose is usually 4.6 to 4.8 percent for all breeds and minerals (ash) average .74 percent. …

Prp Genotypes And Experimental Scrapie In Orally Inoculated Suffolk Sheep In The United States, Katherine I. O'Rourke, G. R. Holyoak, W. W. Clark, J. R. Mickelson, S. Wang, R. P. Melco, T. E. Besser, W. C. Foote

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

One-hundred and three United States Suffolk sheep were inoculated orally with a scrapie agent preparation and monitored for clinical disease and histopathological lesions characteristic of scrapie. A retrospective study of the polymorphisms at codon 171 of the prion protein (PrP) gene was performed on these sheep. All 63 sheep that developed scrapie during the observation period were homozygous for the glutamine 171 (171-QQ) PrP allele. Twelve 171-QQ sheep failed to develop disease. All 5 sheep homozygous for arginine (171-RR) and all 23 heterozygous (171-QR) sheep remained free of scrapie.

Spraker, M. W. Miller, E. S. Williams, D. M. Getzy, W. J. Adrian, G. G. Schoonveid, R. A. Spowart, Katherine I. O'Rourke, J. M. Miller, P. A. Merz

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Between March 1981 and June 1995, a neurological disease characterized histologically by spongiform encephalopathy was diagnosed in 49 free-ranging cervids from northcentral Colorado (USA). Mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) were the primary species affected and accounted for 41(84%) of the 49 cases, but six Rocky Mountain elk (Cereus elaphus nelsoni) and two white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were also affected. Clinical signs included emaciation, excessive salivation, behavioral changes, ataxia, and weakness. Emaciation with total loss of subcutaneous and abdominal adipose tissue and serous atrophy of remaining fat depots were the only consistent gross findings. Spongiform encephalopathy …

The Agricultural Health Study: Factors Affecting Completion And Return Of Self-Administered Questionnaires In A Large Prospective Cohort Study Of Pesticide Applicators, Robert Tarone, Michael Alavanja, Sheila Hoar Zahm, Jay Lubin, Dale Sandler, Suzanne Mcmaster, Nathaniel Rothman, Aaron Blair

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Response rates were examined in a prospective epidemiologic study of individuals, mostly farmers, from Iowa and North Carolina seeking a pesticide applicator license during the period from 1994 through 1996. In the first year of enrollment 16,535 farmers (representing 77% of eligible farmer applicators) enrolled in the study by completing a 17-page questionnaire administered at a pesticide training session; 47% of the enrolled farmers completed and returned a much longer take-home questionnaire. The characteristics of farmers who completed only the enrollment questionnaire were quite similar to those of farmers who also completed and returned the take-home questionnaire. The most notable …

Quantitation Reference Compounds And Voc Recoveries From Soils By Purge-And-Trap Gc/Ms, Brian Schumacher, Steven Ward Jan 1997

Quantitation Reference Compounds And Voc Recoveries From Soils By Purge-And-Trap Gc/Ms, Brian Schumacher, Steven Ward

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Unquantified volatile organic compound (VOC) losses occur in every phase of VOC determination including sample collection, transport, storage, preparation, and analysis. Current quality assurance/quality control measures, such as surrogate spikes and internal standards, do not account for losses that occur during sample handling nor do they account for soil matrix effects. An alternate approach, the quantitation reference compound (QRC) approach, is presented that involves direction injection of the QRCs onto the soil matrix to account for any matrix effects and losses during subsequent processing steps prior to sample analysis. Final VOC quantitation is based on the QRC instead of the …

Hydroxylation Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Ceramides Requires Sur2p And Scs7p, Dale Haak, Ken Gable, Troy Beeler, Teresa Dunn Jan 1997

Hydroxylation Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Ceramides Requires Sur2p And Scs7p, Dale Haak, Ken Gable, Troy Beeler, Teresa Dunn

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae SCS7 and SUR2 genes are members of a gene family that encodes enzymes that desaturate or hydroxylate lipids. Sur2p is required for the hydroxylation of C-4 of the sphingoid moiety of ceramide, and Scs7p is required for the hydroxylation of the very long chain fatty acid. Neither SCS7 nor SUR2 are essential for growth, and lack of the Scs7p- or Sur2p- dependent hydroxylation does not prevent the synthesis of mannosyldiinositolphosphorylceramide, the mature sphingolipid found in yeast. Deletion of either gene suppresses the Ca2+-sensitive phenotype of csg2Δ mutants, which arises from overaccumulation of inositolphosphorylceramide due to …

Choosing Federal Judges In The Second Clinton Administration, Carl Tobias Jan 1997

Choosing Federal Judges In The Second Clinton Administration, Carl Tobias

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

One of the critical responsibilities which the Constitution entrusts to the President of the United States is the appointment of federal judges. The Chief Executive nominates, and with the advice and consent of the Senate, appoints these officials who enjoy life tenure and must resolve disputes which implicate the basic freedoms of America's inhabitants. President Clinton's careful discharge of this crucial duty may well have yielded the foremost success of his first term in office.

When Governor Clinton was campaigning for the presidency in 1992, he promised to name as judges women and men who would be very intelligent, possess …

The Internal Revenue Service Under Equitable Attack, Joseph M. Landolfi Jr. Jan 1997

The Internal Revenue Service Under Equitable Attack, Joseph M. Landolfi Jr.

St. Thomas Law Review

Part II of this article addresses the legislative history of the applicable Internal Revenue Codes. Part III investigates the conflicts between the circuit courts' regarding whether to allow the tolling of the time period for filing a refund claim. Additionally, Part III identifies the conflict that exists within certain circuits that do not apply the doctrine of equitable tolling to tax refund claims but allow other equitable remedies to apply in other tax related matters. Finally, Part IV demonstrates that equitable tolling should be permitted as a defense to an assertion that a tax refund claim has been untimely filed. …

The Law, Policy, And Politics Of Gillnet Restrictions In State Waters Of The Gulf Of Mexico, John Alton Duff Jan 1997

The Law, Policy, And Politics Of Gillnet Restrictions In State Waters Of The Gulf Of Mexico, John Alton Duff

St. Thomas Law Review

Since 1981, every state bordering the Gulf of Mexico has introduced some form of restrictions on the use of gillnets in nearshore waters.' Many recreational fishermen and conservationists have argued that gillnets severely deplete fish stocks and indiscriminately kill marine life Seeking to conserve natural resources, conservationists have mounted campaigns aimed at restricting or banning the commercial use of gillnets. In response, commercial fishermen claim that conservationists' arguments simply cloud the real issue-resource allocation. Commercial fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico maintain that fish stocks such as mullet, red drum, and sea trout are healthy,6 and that the nets are …
