Biodiversity Patterns Of Littoral Tidal River Fishes In The Gulf Coastal Plain Region Of Mississippi, Chet F. Rakocinski, Mark S. Peterson, Steven J. Vanderkooy, Gregory J. Crego Jan 1997

Biodiversity Patterns Of Littoral Tidal River Fishes In The Gulf Coastal Plain Region Of Mississippi, Chet F. Rakocinski, Mark S. Peterson, Steven J. Vanderkooy, Gregory J. Crego

Gulf of Mexico Science

Fish biodiversity patterns within littoral habitats of major tidal river systems of coastal Mississippi were examined. The biodiversity of littoral tidal river fishes varied meaningfully on several spatial scales in the Gulf Coastal Plain region of Mississippi. Fish diversity typically appeared higher in littoral channel habitats than in side-pond habitats of tidal river systems. Faunal representation by three core groups of littoral fishes (cyprinids, centrarchids, and fundulids) generally differed between side-pond and channel habitats, as well as among different tidal river systems. Some of the faunal variation among systems reflected biogeographic (east/west) trends, but most of the variation reflected system …

Building A Battle Site: Roads To And Through Gettysburg, Elwood W. Christ Jan 1997

Building A Battle Site: Roads To And Through Gettysburg, Elwood W. Christ

Adams County History

On the morning of 1 July 1863, lead elements of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia advanced on the town of Gettysburg situated in the lush farm lands of south-central Pennsylvania just eight miles east of the South Mountain in Adams county. The Southern reconnaissance in force made early that summer morning was destined not only to change the history of the struggling Confederacy, but also to set the infant United States republic, indeed the world, on courses towards more democratic forms of government.

Although many historians have dwelled on those three fateful days in 1863, few …

New Atlantis Revisited: Akademgorodok, The Siberian City Of Science, Paul R. Josephson Jan 1997

New Atlantis Revisited: Akademgorodok, The Siberian City Of Science, Paul R. Josephson

Faculty Books

In 1958 construction began on Akademgorodok, a scientific utopian community modeled after Francis Bacon's vision of a "New Atlantis." The city, carved out of a Siberian forest 2,500 miles east of Moscow, was formed by Soviet scientists with Khrushchev's full support. They believed that their rational science, liberated from ideological and economic constraints, would help their country surpass the West in all fields. In a lively history of this city, a symbol of de-Stalinization, Paul Josephson offers the most complete analysis available of the reasons behind the successes and failures of Soviet science--from advances in nuclear physics to politically induced …

Camptotheca Lowreyana, A New Species Of Anti-Cancer Happytrees, Shiyou Li Jan 1997

Camptotheca Lowreyana, A New Species Of Anti-Cancer Happytrees, Shiyou Li

NCPC Publications and Patents

Camptotheca Decaisne (happytrees or Xi Shu, Nyssaceae) is a .monotypic genus endemic to China. Its single species C. acuminata Decaisne ( 1873) has been the major source of Camptothecins, the promising anti - cancer and potential anti - viral drugs (Li and Adair 1994) .

The phenotypic analysis of the genus showed that (1) C. yunnanensis Dode (1908) should be treated as a species separated from C. acuminata (see Li, n. d.) and (2) a new species as the third species of the genus should be established. The present paper describes the new species as C. lowreyana. C. lowreyana has …

Site 41HY261 has the potential to contribute significantly to the prehistory of the region, and is therefore recommended as eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
