Geomorphology Of The Green River In Dinosaur National Monument, Paul E. Grams May 1997

Geomorphology Of The Green River In Dinosaur National Monument, Paul E. Grams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Longitudinal profile, channel cross-section geometry, and depositional patterns of the Green River in its course through the eastern Uinta Mountains are each strongly influenced by river-level geology and tributary sediment delivery processes. We surveyed channel cross sections at 1-km intervals, mapped surficial geology, and measured size and characteristics of bed material in order to evaluate the geomorphic organization of the 70- km study reach. Canyon reaches that are of high gradient and narrow channel geometry are associated with the most resistant lithologies exposed at river level and the most frequent occurrences of tributary debris fans. Meandering reaches that are characterized …

Modelling Vegetation Cover Types Using Multiseasonal Remotely Sensed Data To Compare Ecotones At Multiple Spatial And Spectral Resolutions, Kimberly Patraw May 1997

Modelling Vegetation Cover Types Using Multiseasonal Remotely Sensed Data To Compare Ecotones At Multiple Spatial And Spectral Resolutions, Kimberly Patraw

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Army National Guard Bureau has implemented a cooperative project with Utah State University to help with the use, display, and evaluation of environmental data for maintaining land condition. Camp Grayling, Michigan, is comprised of deciduous and evergreen forest types. Use of remote sensing for classification has been limited in this region due to the difficulty of species-level classification using single-date remote-sensing techniques. Also, remote sensing has traditionally focused on mapping homogenous zones rather than vegetation boundaries, while one of the concerns for land managers is the nature of vegetation edges (ecotones).

This study analyzed each season and band from …

Delineation Of Ecological Units For The Ashley National Forest, At The Landscape Level, Using Classification Tree Modeling, Teresa H. Swiatek May 1997

Delineation Of Ecological Units For The Ashley National Forest, At The Landscape Level, Using Classification Tree Modeling, Teresa H. Swiatek

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study integrated remotely sensed data, geographic information system (GIS), and classification tree-based modeling to delineate ecological units for the Ashley National Forest. Data points, provided by the Ashley National Forest, with a known location and dominant vegetation type, were related to data layers that were determined to be helpful in a landtype classification. These layers included elevation, slope, aspect, potential solar irradiation, precipitation, geology, basins, Landsat thematic mapper (TM) bands 3, 4, 5, and 6, and basic land cover. These points, with their related information, were then used to train the tree-based model for landtype classification. This resulted in …

A Paradigm Shift In Legal Education: Preparing Law Students For The Twenty-First Century: Teaching Foreign Law, Culture, And Legal Language Of The Major U.S. American Trading Partners, Gloria M. Sanchez May 1997

A Paradigm Shift In Legal Education: Preparing Law Students For The Twenty-First Century: Teaching Foreign Law, Culture, And Legal Language Of The Major U.S. American Trading Partners, Gloria M. Sanchez

San Diego Law Review

Globalization of the world markets is the impetus behind this Article's call to law schools to include elective courses in transnational practice. Based on the denationalization of markets, laws and politics, the author argues that law schools should provide specialized courses in foreign law, taught in their domestic language, so that students are trained in the basic legal structures of other nations. Because of the creation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) the author recommends courses in Mexican law, culture, and Spanish legal language in U.S. law schools. The author also explains why understanding law in the context …

Paper Session Ii-D - International Cooperation By Amateur Satellites, Philip Chien

Space Congress® Proceedings

AMSAT, The Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation, has launched over 30 amateur radio satellites. Most have been cooperative International projects. The first satellites from Argentina, Portugal, Korea, and other countries were amateur satellites, manufactured in cooperation with AMSAT chapters around the world. The Phase 3-D international satellite is a cooperative deal with 14 countries participating. This paper will discuss how the groups around the world decided to cooperate with each other, and lessons learned from the various projects. Examples of how international satellites have been used for education will also be included.

Paper Session I-B - Pc's In Space: Priming The Next Generation Astronomers And Scientists, Tom Devlin Ph.D.

Space Congress® Proceedings

Not since the Apollo era has student and teacher interest been more focused on space science. Mankind’s curiosity to solve space mysteries led to the development of the Hubble Space Telescope. Just as the Apollo missions expanded space science knowledge and inspired our civilization towards greater technological feats, Hubble is expanding our understanding of the universe.

The PCs in Space program, a NASA spin-off, is a national teacher enhancement program for elementary and middle school teachers, keying off the excitement created by the new discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope. This excitement has opened up space and earth science acceptance …

Us/Japanese Trade Policy: A Defense Of Limited Unilateralism, Stephen D. Behnke Apr 1997

Us/Japanese Trade Policy: A Defense Of Limited Unilateralism, Stephen D. Behnke

Honors Theses

With the end of the Cold War, the Soviet threat is no longer a factor in our formulation of trade policy with Japan. In days past, the State Department cited geopolitical concerns in its on-going battle with those sections of the government who were more willing to slap trade restrictions on Japan for alleged unfair trading practices. Until the early 1970s, United States trade policy was almost totally subjugated to winning the Cold War; our market was thrown open to imports even if others were not. Back then, though, this was not only a wise Cold War "military tactic," but …

Integrating Multicultural Literature Into The Curriculum At Pyne Poynt Family School, Camden, New Jersey, Corlette Mays Apr 1997

Integrating Multicultural Literature Into The Curriculum At Pyne Poynt Family School, Camden, New Jersey, Corlette Mays

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis documents the importance of multicultural literature in educational environments and provides strategies for implementing the literature into the curriculum. Without the knowledge and the background of what's available in this particular genre and how it can used effectively, integration of materials into the curriculum cannot occur.

The African American and Hispanic American bibliographies were developed from the materials in the Pyne Poynt Family School Library to be used as teaching tools for the staff when developing resource based units of instruction and assignments. With this awareness, usage of the multicultural materials in the collection should increase over a …

The authors have developed an interactive environment for the creation and maintenance of dynamic, active multimedia-based teaching mechanisms. The environment is designed to be user-friendly and to facilitate the creation of educational material. This tool has already been used to create courses in multidimensional signal processing (MDSP) by researchers working together while geographically separated.

Toward An Authentically Anti-Racist Curriculum, Jeremy D. Dowsett Apr 1997

Toward An Authentically Anti-Racist Curriculum, Jeremy D. Dowsett

Honors Theses

Below I will address the failure of racial essentialist multiculturalism's approach toward combating racism, the confining and backward logic upon which identity politics multiculturalism is founded, the excesses of poststructuralist multiculturalism, and finally, in an attempt to show these theories in practice, I will move to the classroom and explore the ramifications of these strands of multiculturalism on the teaching of history and English. Part Two of this essay consists of a curriculum designed to address the shortcomings of the pedagogies mentioned above.
