The Charism Of Charity Transcending Centuries And Cultures, Dorothy Macdougall S.C. Oct 1997

The Charism Of Charity Transcending Centuries And Cultures, Dorothy Macdougall S.C.

Vincentian Studies

According to Dorothy MacDougall, “the charism of charity has transcended centuries and cultures to the extent that our foundresses and Community members and lay associates have been willing to break through biases of culture to reveal God’s love to the world.” The charism requires “inclusivity, imagination, and risk.” She offers examples from the history of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Kentucky that illustrate this. For instance, the Sisters removed segregation from their hospitals before the Civil Rights era. They also opened a hospital specifically for African Americans because they were not properly served or not comfortable going elsewhere; …

An Annotated List Of The Writings Of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton (2), Judith Metz S.C.

Vincentian Studies

This list continues from volume 18, issue 1 and includes Elizabeth Seton materials from all non-Sister/Daughter of Charity repositories. It begins the listing for Saint Joseph’s Provincial House, which holds the largest collection of Elizabeth’s writings. The archives from the Archdiocese of Baltimore contain letters from her to Bishop/Archbishop Carroll, including those from when William Dubourg forbade the Sisters of Charity’s correspondence with Pierre Babade, and those that explain her difficulties with John David. One describes her concerns about the impact the Rules of the Daughters of Charity will have on her community. Another is about her worries with regard …

Ka'o'Ob: The Metates Of Chichen Itza Within The Context Of The Greater Maya Realm, Bryan Luter Anderson Oct 1997

Ka'o'Ob: The Metates Of Chichen Itza Within The Context Of The Greater Maya Realm, Bryan Luter Anderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Metates- maize grinding stones- from the Terminal Classic/Early Postclassic Maya site of Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico are analyzed with respect to both intra-site dynamics and in relation to the greater Maya realm. Two hundred and seven metates or portions of metates were recorded in survey and mapping activities and from site storage. These metates are examined with a focus on size, material, form, and distribution. Results of the research are used to show how the inhabitants of Chichen Itza adapted to a native environment ill-suited for metate manufacture, and how this adaptation led to a metate industry significantly different from …

Trends In Indian Media And Prospects For Broadcasting Reform, Rishab Aiyer Ghosh Oct 1997

Trends In Indian Media And Prospects For Broadcasting Reform, Rishab Aiyer Ghosh

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article argues that India's media market, despite immense latent demand driven by its large population and growing economy, is stifled by government-imposed monopolies and restrictive policies. While technological advancements and private sector growth have created opportunities for competition, the government's reluctance to liberalize media regulations and its focus on maintaining control over content and distribution hinder the market's potential. The article critiques the proposed Broadcasting Bill for prioritizing political and economic interests over free expression and market efficiency, urging a shift toward policies that foster competition, innovation, and decentralized media infrastructure.

Ethnic Tourism And The Renegotiation Of Tradition In Tana Toraja (Sulawesi, Indonesia), Kathleen M. Adams Oct 1997

Ethnic Tourism And The Renegotiation Of Tradition In Tana Toraja (Sulawesi, Indonesia), Kathleen M. Adams

Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article examines some of the political and symbolic issues inherent in the touristic renegotiation of Torajan ritual and history, chronicling the strategies whereby Torajans attempt to refashion outsider imagery to enhance their own personal standing and position in the Indonesian ethnic hierarchy. The author suggests that the Toraja case challenges the popular assumption that tourism promotion brings a complete loss of agency to indigenous peoples: Torajans not only engage in ingenious political strategies to enhance their group's image, but vigorously contest perceived threats to their identity and power. The author argues that such processes of self-conscious cultural reformulation do …

Linking Transport Infrastructure Investments And Economic Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Ambe J. Njoh Oct 1997

Linking Transport Infrastructure Investments And Economic Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Ambe J. Njoh

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The study explores the link between investments in transportation infrastructure, operationalized in terms of road density, and economic development, defined in terms of gross domestic product per capita (GDP/Cap), in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The findings support the hypothesis of a positive association between the two variables. The association is stronger for paved, than for all, roads in general. Furthermore, a negative but statistically insignificant relationship is observed between unpaved roads and economic development. Thus, economic development is a function more of quality, than quantity of roads in SSA. Therefore, a more judicious use of the scarce resource of sub-Saharan African …
