Where One Size Does Not Fit All: Small Community Diversity, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue, Ann Ziebarth, Bonnie Shrewsbury Oct 1997

Where One Size Does Not Fit All: Small Community Diversity, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue, Ann Ziebarth, Bonnie Shrewsbury

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Using a community classification based on key demographic and geographic factors and data from the U.S. Census, analyses from 212 small communities indicate significant inter- and intra-state differences. The communities studied were located in two states within the North Central Region. The sample was limited to incorporated places with populations between 1,000 and 2,500. Several commonly-held ideas about small communities are either challenged or confirmed by this research. Similarities and differences among the communities as well as between the states support the conclusion that small communities have diverse characteristics. Not all small communities ofthis size are geographically isolated places with …

Review Of Of Bison And Man By Harold P. Danz, James R. Shortridge Oct 1997

Review Of Of Bison And Man By Harold P. Danz, James R. Shortridge

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Because plains bison have come to symbolize open spaces and freedom to Americans, as well as past ecological insensitivity, stories about them have widespread appeal. Harold Danz's contribution to this large and growing literature is an overview, a brief treatment of the animal's evolution, demise, and eventual recovery. Mr. Danz brings a varied background to his writing: long-time service with the National Park Service, a PhD, and the first executive directorship of the American Bison Association (ABA). This experience produces an unusual book, one that mixes detached analysis with enthusiastic promotion. The promotion sections, in my opinion, are the most …

Common Problems, Different "Solutions": Learningfrom International Approaches To Improving Medicalservices Access For Underserved Populations, Morris Barer, Laura Wood Oct 1997

Common Problems, Different "Solutions": Learningfrom International Approaches To Improving Medicalservices Access For Underserved Populations, Morris Barer, Laura Wood

Dalhousie Law Journal

Canada shares with most OECD countries the problems associated with inequitable geographic access to physician services, and improving the geographic distribution of physicians is a policy preoccupation of all ministries of health in Canada today. Recent court challenges by newly-entering physicians to physician supply controls in B. C. and New Brunswick have brought the issue into sharp relief. The authors explore the degree to which the provinces have adopted common approaches to addressing these problems, and whether Canadian policy-makers have learned from international experience. The recent judgment in the Waldman case in B.C. is analyzed in terms of likely implications …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Reforms In Europeanhealth Care Systems, Thomas Rathwell Oct 1997

A Comparative Analysis Of The Reforms In Europeanhealth Care Systems, Thomas Rathwell

Dalhousie Law Journal

Most countries in Europe are at various stages in the process of reforming their health care systems. Instead of different and more diverse systems emerging, the health reform process has resulted in a convergence on "managed competition" as the only acceptable means for delivering health care. After briefly describing the historical context, this paper examines the nature and scope of the reform process in Europe. The major features of the reforms are cost-containment and a reduction in the role of the state. There have been few systematic attempts to measure the extent to which expectations are being realized. The paper …

Mapping Antibiotic-Resistant Neisseria Gonorrhoeae Isoaltes In Metropolitan Toronto: Issues Of Scale, Positional Accuracy And Confidentiality, Jody F. Decker, Bob Sharpe, Jo-Anne Dillon

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

The primary objective of this paper was to investigate the methodological implications of mapping Neisseria gonorrhoeae using the partial three-digit postal code instead of the complete six-digit postal code. The reporting locations of N gonorrhoeae isolates submitted from hospitals, doctor’s offices, private and provincial laboratories, and sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics were used as a model. Specifically, the paper focused on variations in geographical distributions of STD data when mapped at different aggregations of postal code data and at different map scales. Such variations are of importance to those who analyze the spaital epidemiology of STDs, and the accessibility and …

Redressing Jewish Difference In Tania Modleski's "Cinema And The Dark Continent", Laura Levitt Oct 1997

Redressing Jewish Difference In Tania Modleski's "Cinema And The Dark Continent", Laura Levitt

Journal of Religion & Film

This essay addresses what Jewish Studies and Religion scholars have to contribute to cultural discourse about film. Through a careful reading of feminist critic Tania Modleski's essay, this article demonstrates some of the blindspots in film studies when it comes to depictions of Jews, Jewishness, and Judaism. By addressing the ambivalent status of Jewishness in Modleski's work, the essay offers another way of reading Jewishness in not only the Jazz Singer and Crossing Delancy, but in critical discourse more generally.
