Practice Teaching In Remote Aboriginal Communities: The Need For Adaptation To The Social And Cultural Context, Gary Partington

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

As part of the teacher education program at Edith Cowan University, a small group of student teachers experience teaching practice in remote Aboriginal communities. In this paper, student teacher perceptions of their experiences on such a practice are presented to illustrate the influence of the practice on their views about teaching Aboriginal children. Through an investigation of journals written during the practice, it is apparent that students had considerable difficulty adapting their teaching to the context in which they were working, particularly in relation to the different cultural and social demands of the situation.

The purpose of this study was to determine the source and amount of information that a sample of businesses receive on environmental regulatory topics and from what sources they would prefer to receive this information. More specifically, the study demonstrated the discrepancy between the sources from which businesses currently receive their information and the sources from which they would prefer to receive it. The study also addressed how relevant this information was to the businesses and with which regulations the businesses were the most and least knowledgeable. Using Gis To Assess The Relationship Between Land Use And Water Quality At A Watershed Level, Xinhao Wang, Zhi-Yong Yin

Environmental and Ocean Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Daily water quality data from six U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) monitoring stations along the Great Miami River and digital land use/land cover and elevation data for the same watershed were analyzed. The validity of using electrolytic conductivity as a water quality indicator was examined by correlating conductivity with 199 other water quality variables, 60 of which were significantly correlated with conductivity. Positive correlations existed between conductivity and dissolved materials. Negative correlations existed between conductivity and insoluble or suspended materials. Conductivity was also found negatively correlated with stream discharge, and so were most water quality variables that were positively correlated with …

A study on the distribution of quahog (Mercenaria mercenaria (Linnaeus 1758)) larvae in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island was conducted during a single summer season in 1995. Samples of the larvae were collected weekly using an electric bilge pump and a 60 um mesh plankton net at two depths (0.3 m and 1.6m) at five sampling stations distributed landward along the West shore, 12.6 kmto 30.6 km from Rhode Island Sound. Three stations were located in the upper estuary, i.e., Upper Bay, and two stations were in the lower estuary, i.e., UpperWest Passage.

This research investigates the engineering properties of mixtures of bottom ash and Class F fly ash relevant to their utilization in highway embankment construction. The research included ash samples from two major power plants in Indiana that disposed of their ash differently. The first power plant disposes of the bottom ash and fly ash separately and hence explicit mixtures were synthetically formed and tested. The second power plant disposes of the bottom ash and fly ash together in a common location and hence they become homogeneous samples for the research. Currently commercially available portable gas chromatographs are suitable only for the analysis of volatile organic compounds, and do not include temperature programming capability. This dissertation presents the development of a novel direct at-column heater design and a pressure driven injection system that is compatible with semi-volatile analytes. The collinear and coaxial at-column heater designs incorporate heater and temperature sensing elements placed along the column. Resistive heating controls the column temperature via a feedback circuit and a software selected program. Linear temperature programming ramps up to 14$\sp\circ$C/s were obtained, with a total power consumption of less than 100 Watt. The accuracy …

This study on the recycling potential of out-of-service poles for use in engineered wood products involved determination of basic properties of used southern pine (Pinus sp.) utility poles and also manufacture of glued-laminated beams from these poles. Most of the defect-free portions of 25-year treated poles still retained adequate strengths comparable to those of freshly treated poles and untreated southern pine. Creosote contents, however, diminished with pole ages. The reduction in creosote content was correlated with lower decay resistance, poorer dimensional stability, and lower lumber recovery, but better gluability. The mechanism of fish protein solubilization by acid hydrolysis at elevated temperatures was investigated. Rate expressions for the solubilization were determined using pilot scale data with two different rate determination methods. A postulated mechanism was verified and estimated rates were evaluated on five independent verification experiments. A functional relationship between nonprotein byproduct concentration and whiteness of fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) was developed. Initial and set-point operating variables were calculated to produce FPH with acceptable color characteristics for food use. A batch reactor was used for duplicate hydrolysis trials conducted at three acid and three temperature levels for four hours. Samples …

Population density estimates, yield data, damage rating, and marketability of cabbage were used to assess the effectiveness of integrating several control tactics--an action threshold, host plant resistance, intercropping (companion planting), microbial control, and pesticide use reduction--for managing the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.), and the cabbage looper (CL), Trichoplusia ni (Hubner), in cabbage and in protecting beneficial arthropods. An action threshold of six DBM larvae per plant was inadequate for making insecticide application decisions because cabbage plots treated based on this action threshold had significantly higher densities of CL and DBM larvae, higher damage rating and yield loss, and …

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Gerald Gentleman Station (GGS), located in southwestern Nebraska near Sutherland, is the newest and largest electric generating facility in the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) system. In August 1994, NPPD constructed a 9.2-mile long railspur between GGS and the Union Pacific Railroad to create competition in the coal-hauling market. A multi-objective criteria analysis was used to identify a railspur route with the optimal combination of low environmental impact, favorable engineering characteristics and economic feasibility. Based on jurisdictional delineations, the GGS railspur impacted 1.95 acres of wetlands. Construction ofthe wetlands to mitigate for those impacted acres was initiated during winter 1993-94 …

The Immunotoxic Effects Of A Herbicide, 3,4-Dichloropropionanilide, On Murine Macrophage Cytokine Production., Yilin Cindy Xie

Propanil (3,4-dichloropropionanilide) is a herbicide that is used for post-emergence control of weeds on rice, wheat, and potato production in the United States. The first hypothesis of our study is: propanil significantly inhibits cytokine production by macrophages which may contribute to its overall immunotoxicity. We demonstrate that i.p. propanil exposure significantly inhibited IL-6, TNF-{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} and IL-1{dollar}\\beta{dollar} production by macrophages. Acute oral exposure with propanil demonstrates that both 3 and 7 day post-exposure cytokine production by macrophages was reduced. However, only 7 day post-exposure with the primary metabolite of propanil, 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA), resulted in the inhibition of cytokine production. Therefore, we …
