Adolescent Suicide Prevention Programs: From A Suicide Victim To A Survivor, Chikako Webb

The purpose of the study was to identify effective adolescent suicide prevention programs. Three major causes of adolescent suicide in Japan were discussed: (1) intense pressure of examinations to enter schools; (2) peer bullying; and (3) teacher violence toward their students. Suicide in Japan's past, education reform and moral education, and bullying were also addressed. Features of existing suicide prevention programs were examined. This was followed by a description of two successful prevention programs: (1) successful counseling system as professional help; and (2) desirable educational system including proper communication. The Immunotoxic Effects Of A Herbicide, 3,4-Dichloropropionanilide, On Murine Macrophage Cytokine Production., Yilin Cindy Xie

Propanil (3,4-dichloropropionanilide) is a herbicide that is used for post-emergence control of weeds on rice, wheat, and potato production in the United States. The first hypothesis of our study is: propanil significantly inhibits cytokine production by macrophages which may contribute to its overall immunotoxicity. We demonstrate that i.p. propanil exposure significantly inhibited IL-6, TNF-{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} and IL-1{dollar}\\beta{dollar} production by macrophages. Acute oral exposure with propanil demonstrates that both 3 and 7 day post-exposure cytokine production by macrophages was reduced. However, only 7 day post-exposure with the primary metabolite of propanil, 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA), resulted in the inhibition of cytokine production. Therefore, we …

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Gerald Gentleman Station (GGS), located in southwestern Nebraska near Sutherland, is the newest and largest electric generating facility in the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) system. In August 1994, NPPD constructed a 9.2-mile long railspur between GGS and the Union Pacific Railroad to create competition in the coal-hauling market. A multi-objective criteria analysis was used to identify a railspur route with the optimal combination of low environmental impact, favorable engineering characteristics and economic feasibility. Based on jurisdictional delineations, the GGS railspur impacted 1.95 acres of wetlands. Construction ofthe wetlands to mitigate for those impacted acres was initiated during winter 1993-94 …

Undergraduate institutions, on their own and in partnership with law schools, can and should play a more significant role in expanding the pool of law school applicants from non-traditional backgrounds. The Law and Diversity Program at Western Washington University was conceived out of this desire to prepare non-traditional students for the study of law and thereby help bring more diversity to the legal profession. Problem. Seventh-day Adventist secondary schools recruit students through a severe entrance examination. However, after 9 months of schooling, more than 20% fail without possibility of repeating the grade or pursuing studies in less academically challenging schools. They are pushed out without means of coping with real life. This situation has multiple negative impacts on families who sell all their belongings in order to send their children to school where they can be prepared for a better life. It is for the interest of the Rwandese to learn which factors may contribute to maintaining these students in school.

Practice Teaching In Remote Aboriginal Communities: The Need For Adaptation To The Social And Cultural Context, Gary Partington

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

As part of the teacher education program at Edith Cowan University, a small group of student teachers experience teaching practice in remote Aboriginal communities. In this paper, student teacher perceptions of their experiences on such a practice are presented to illustrate the influence of the practice on their views about teaching Aboriginal children. Through an investigation of journals written during the practice, it is apparent that students had considerable difficulty adapting their teaching to the context in which they were working, particularly in relation to the different cultural and social demands of the situation.

This research investigates the engineering properties of mixtures of bottom ash and Class F fly ash relevant to their utilization in highway embankment construction. The research included ash samples from two major power plants in Indiana that disposed of their ash differently. The first power plant disposes of the bottom ash and fly ash separately and hence explicit mixtures were synthetically formed and tested. The second power plant disposes of the bottom ash and fly ash together in a common location and hence they become homogeneous samples for the research. The Oxfordian rocks of north Dorset are poorly exposed at outcrop. A drilling operation was devised and implemented and the complete sequence of strata from the Weymouth Member of the Oxford Clay Formation through to the Ringstead Waxy Clay Formation was penetrated. Three boreholes were drilled; the Hallett's Farm Borehole, covering the strata from the stratigraphically youngest Ringstead Waxy Clay Formation down to the Cucklington Oolite; the Bowden Farm Borehole, continuing the sequence from the Cucklington Oolite into the lower part of the Hazelbury Bryan Formation and the Hartmoor Hill Borehole which continues downward into the Oxford Clay Formation. The siting of hazardous and nuclear waste facilities has proven to be a task of enormous difficulty in our federal system. In this Article, the Author argues that one of the major causal factors for this difficulty is that the legal regime surrounding waste facility siting decisions is not structured in a manner sensitive to the human factors involved. The siting of a hazardous waste facility is likely to generate a negative community response where the imposition of externally made decisions and externally generated wastes fails to take into account the innate human trait of territoriality. They are the ultimate example of a low probability, high consequence event: no one in recorded human history is confirmed to have ever died from an asteroid or a comet, but the odds are that at some time in the next several centuries (and conceivably next year) an asteroid or a comet will cause mass localized destruction and that at some time in the coming half million years (and conceivably next year), an asteroid or a comet will kill several billion people. Bird populations and forest vegetation were monitored before (1984-86), during (1987-88) and after (1989-96) a gypsy moth outbreak and subsequent defoliations at the Sleepy Creek Public Hunting and Fishing Area in Morgan and Berkeley Counties, West Virginia. The objective of this study was to examine how gypsy moth defoliation affected forest vegetation, and how changes in forest structure and composition affected bird populations and the nesting ecology of four bird species. Repeated defoliations killed many overstory trees (primarily oaks, Quercus spp.), opening the forest canopy and allowing vigorous growth of understory vegetation. This study was based upon the premise that college students who perceive themselves to matter to their institutions will be more involved and inclined to persist in their educational experiences than those who perceive themselves to be marginalized. The study pursued the question of possible relationships among student perceptions of mattering, involvement and persistence with emphasis on nontraditional student issues. A questionnaire, The Mattering Scales for Adult Students in Postsecondary Education, with additional sections to measure perceptions of involvement and persistence, was administered to a sample of nontraditional and traditional students at a commuter oriented co-educational institution of 6,500 students …

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Research shows that active and cooperative learning activities can be effective teaching methods; however, developing and carrying out these practices is often challenging, perhaps even confusing and frustrating, to educators who have not been trained in group processes. This article reviews basic principles for using group techniques in college classrooms, describes the developmental stages of groups, and provides examples of activities and assignments as well as processes for reflection and evaluation.
