A New Spectral Theory For Nonlinear Operators And Its Applications, W. Feng Jan 1997

A New Spectral Theory For Nonlinear Operators And Its Applications, W. Feng

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper, by applying (p,k)-epi mapping theory, we introduce a new definition of spectrum for nonlinear operators which contains all eigenvalues, as in the linear case. Properties of this spectrum are given and comparison is made with the other definitions of spectra. We also give applications of the new theory.

Fourier Transform Of HN(X + P)HN(X − P), Mourad E. H. Ismail, Krzystztof Stempak

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We evaluate Fourier transform of a function with Hermite polynomials involved. An elementary proof is based on a combinatorial formula for Hermite polynomials.

Inventory Under Consignment, John Semple, Brian Downs Jan 1997

Inventory Under Consignment, John Semple, Brian Downs

Historical Working Papers

A model is presented, based on experience from a real-world warehouser, that provides insight as to how best to optimize replenishment. Further work is proposed to explore forecasting and to calculate needed storage capacities.

Law And Economics: Its Glorious Past And Cloudy Future, Richard A. Epstein Jan 1997

Law And Economics: Its Glorious Past And Cloudy Future, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

Our discipline is no longer nourished by huge advances outside its own field. Familiar doctrinal issues are exhausted: we do not need yet another theoretical article that proves the (in)efficiency of comparative negligence. So where do we go? One possibility is to examine the foundations of the field to show, for example, that the language of "preferences" is inadequate for economics, as some economists themselves have tried to do.' But I see little return from this approach. Whatever it may capture about the foibles of individual decisionmaking, it seems to be a philosophical difficulty in search of a real world …

The Modern Uses Of Ancient Law, Richard A. Epstein Jan 1997

The Modern Uses Of Ancient Law, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

This lecture follows that tradition in part by paying close attention to both the substantive and interpretive rules found in Roman law, giving illustrations of both. It seeks to show the influence that these early formulations have had on modem law, often in quite unexpected ways. The first part is devoted to Roman principles on the acquisition of property and their relationship to disputes of more modem vintage. The second part looks, more briefly to be sure, at questions of constitutional interpretation and suggests that ancient techniques often supply the necessary tertium quid between excessively rigid versions of the "plain …

Social And Cultural Factors Affecting Rates Of Regular Retreatment Of Mosquito Nets With Insecticide In Bagamoyo District, Tanzania, P.J. Winch, A.M. Makemba, V.R. Makame, M.S. Mfaume, M.C. Lynch, Zul Premji, J.N. Minjas, C.J. Shiff Jan 1997

Social And Cultural Factors Affecting Rates Of Regular Retreatment Of Mosquito Nets With Insecticide In Bagamoyo District, Tanzania, P.J. Winch, A.M. Makemba, V.R. Makame, M.S. Mfaume, M.C. Lynch, Zul Premji, J.N. Minjas, C.J. Shiff

Pathology, East Africa

Insecticide-treated mosquito nets have an impact on mortality and morbidity in young children under controlled conditions. When integrated into larger control programs, there is the danger that rates of regular retreatment of the nets with insecticide will drop, greatly limiting their effectiveness as a public health intervention. In Bagamoyo District, Tanzania, rates of retreatment dropped significantly when payment for the insecticide was introduced. A series of neighbourhood (hamlet) meetings were held in all study villages to discuss people's concerns about the insecticide and ways to increase rates of retreatment. Although changes were made in the procedure for retreatment, rates of …

Hearsay Evidence: A Comparison Of Two Jurisdictions: United States And Nigeria, Lawrence Okechukwu Azubuike Jan 1997

Hearsay Evidence: A Comparison Of Two Jurisdictions: United States And Nigeria, Lawrence Okechukwu Azubuike

LLM Theses and Essays

Many jurisdictions have detailed rules of evidence which regulate the facts that are admissible in court. The hearsay rule is one such rule which excludes certain evidence. The hearsay rule has roots in an old common law principle and is featured in many jurisdictions today, but has endured heavy criticisms over time. This paper examines the application of the hearsay rule in the United States and in Nigeria. Both are common law countries, however, the United States’ legal system is more advanced than that of Nigeria. This comparison aims to inform and assist current reform efforts in Nigeria.

Developing A "Transnational" Law For International Sales: The Vienna Convention's Treatment Of Trade Usages, Ainhoa Veiga-Torregrosa Jan 1997

Developing A "Transnational" Law For International Sales: The Vienna Convention's Treatment Of Trade Usages, Ainhoa Veiga-Torregrosa

LLM Theses and Essays

The 1980 United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG or Vienna Convention), conceived for worldwide acceptance, sets forth a uniform set of rules aimed at regulating some of the issues that, in an international sales contract, are likely to arise between the parties to such international transaction. The extent to which the substantive solutions that the Vienna Convention provides with the aim of filling in gaps within international sales contracts, are to achieve the standing of a predictable, global, and uniform legal background for these contracts, is the question to be treated in this paper …
