The Influence Of Out-Group Network Ties On The Television Usage And Attitudes Of Mormon Women, Lois D. Brown Jan 1997

The Influence Of Out-Group Network Ties On The Television Usage And Attitudes Of Mormon Women, Lois D. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Analysis of survey data collected from more than 400 LDS women (n=429) indicates that as the number of non-LDS or inactive LDS network associates increases, so does the women's identification with modern female TV characters. The frequency of network conversations about television also correlates to several television behaviors and attitudes such as watching entertainment and informational TV programming, identifying with modern characters, and regarding TV as useful. Mirroring the national trend, LDS women who are more educated use television less. A model is presented which details the flow and impact of personal network influence on the television habits and attitudes …

Prophets, Planning, And Politics: Utah's Planning Heritage And Its Significance Today And Tomorrow, Janna K. Bushman Jan 1997

Prophets, Planning, And Politics: Utah's Planning Heritage And Its Significance Today And Tomorrow, Janna K. Bushman

Theses and Dissertations

Utah's planning heritage includes both physical and social elements. In 1833 Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church, designed the Plat for the City of Zion. Associated with his plan were the principles of communitarianism and a demo-theocratic form of government. As the Mormons journeyed across the Midwest to the Great Basin, they applied these planning beliefs in various ways. Throughout Utah today, large city blocks, wide roads, and grid iron layouts remain as testaments to the state's early physical planning tenets. Other factors, though, have led Mormons to abandon the social aspects of the plan and to embrace the …

A Field Trip To Benetton And Beyond: Some Thoughts On Outsider Narrative In A Law School Clinic, Carolyn Grose Jan 1997

A Field Trip To Benetton And Beyond: Some Thoughts On Outsider Narrative In A Law School Clinic, Carolyn Grose

Faculty Scholarship

This essay explores the process of teaching students—and ourselves—to listen to and accept different versions of reality. Such exploration results in a proposition that is easy to state but difficult to accomplish: that in order to achieve this goal, we must challenge the students' "common sense”—their sense that they "know" how people act—by offering examples of behaviors that differ from that knowledge, without triggering the very "common sense" we are trying to combat. Toward this end, the first section of the essay presents a hypothetical initial interview with a client, and the student interviewer's reactions to her, which reflect the …

A Response To Mark Weber, John A. Drobnicki Jan 1997

A Response To Mark Weber, John A. Drobnicki

Publications and Research

Mark Weber, who at the time was both the editor of the Journal of Historical Review and the Director of the Institute for Historical Review, wrote a letter to the editor of Public & Access Services Quarterly objecting to a 1995 article written by John Drobnicki, Carol Goldman, Trina Knight, and Johanna Thomas ("Holocaust-Denial Literature in Public Libraries: An Investigation of Public Librarians’ Attitudes Regarding Acquisition and Access"). Drobnicki wrote a detailed response, which not only refutes the claims of Mr. Weber, but which also demonstrates how Holocaust "revisionists" often make claims which do not hold up.

Merengue: Dominican Music And Identity, Paul Austerlitz Jan 1997

Merengue: Dominican Music And Identity, Paul Austerlitz

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

Merengue—the quintessential Dominican dance music—has a long and complex history, both on the island and in the large immigrant community in New York City. In this ambitious work, Paul Austerlitz unravels the African and Iberian roots of merengue and traces its growth under dictator Rafael Trujillo and its renewed popularity as an international music.

Using extensive interviews as well as written commentaries, Austerlitz examines the historical and contemporary contexts in which merengue is performed and danced, its symbolic significance, its social functions, and its musical and choreographic structures. He tells the tale of merengue's political functions, and of its class …

Originalism And The Importance Of Constitutional Aspirations, Richard B. Saphire Jan 1997

Originalism And The Importance Of Constitutional Aspirations, Richard B. Saphire

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Originalism and nonoriginalism represent competing approaches to constitutional interpretation. Originalism insists that the understandings or intentions of the Constitution's drafters and ratifiers provide the principal, if not the exclusive, nontextual sources of constitutional meaning, while nonoriginalism insists that meaning can also be derived legitimately from more contemporary sources of political and moral values. In his recent book, The Constitution in the Courts: Law or Politics?, Professor Michael Perry abandons nonoriginalism in favor of a theory of originalism which he develops and defends.

This Article examines and evaluates Perry's defense of originalism. The author argues that Perry's version of originalism is …

Prospects For Fertility Decline And Implications For Population Growth In South Asia, John Bongaarts, Sajeda Amin Jan 1997

Prospects For Fertility Decline And Implications For Population Growth In South Asia, John Bongaarts, Sajeda Amin

Policy Research Division working papers

Fertility transitions are now well underway in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and these countries are expected to reach replacement fertility within the next two decades. While high fertility still prevails in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nepal, these countries are also expected to complete their fertility transitions in the next three or four decades. Despite these encouraging trends in fertility, the populations of all countries in the region are expected to grow substantially, with increases ranging from 50 percent in Sri Lanka to 212 percent in Afghanistan. The long-range trajectory of population growth is very sensitive to minor deviations from the …
