Beyond Burritos And Lumpia: Ethnic Identity As A Difference In Preservice Teacher Education, Sara Soledad Garcia, E. Litton Jan 1997

Beyond Burritos And Lumpia: Ethnic Identity As A Difference In Preservice Teacher Education, Sara Soledad Garcia, E. Litton

Teacher Education

Teachers play a pivotal role in society. On a daily basis they influence the futures of the children they encounter. Not only do they teach children how to read and write butteachers are also charged with the task of creating responsible citizens who should think critically about society. Teacher educators, and specifically those individuals charged with the task of preparing preservice teachers, have responsibilities similar to teachers in the field. Education, on any level, ought to be a transformative process.

Thus, the preparation of teachers as instruments of social change ought to be a central focus in preservice teacher education …

Self Narrative And The Process Of Inquiry In Teacher Development: Living And Working In Just Institutions, Sara Soledad Garcia Jan 1997

Self Narrative And The Process Of Inquiry In Teacher Development: Living And Working In Just Institutions, Sara Soledad Garcia

Teacher Education

Historically the cultures of certain ethnic groups in the United States have been rendered invisible in school pedagogy. New stipulations for credentialing in California, however, require teachers to reflect critically upon the meaning of cultural difference, including their own thinking and lived experience as well as the lives, backgrounds, and cultural history ofthe children they teach. To be effective in culturally diverse classrooms, teachers must confront certain contradictions in their own identity. Most teacher candidates have shaped their identity according to a set of mainstream values and beliefs that has denigrated cultural difference. The personal confrontation with difference and self-identity …

Judicial Supremacy And Nonjudicial Interpretation Of The Constitution, Scott E. Gant Jan 1997

Judicial Supremacy And Nonjudicial Interpretation Of The Constitution, Scott E. Gant

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

When do, and when should, actors other than judges interpret the Constitution? Over time, this question has received attention from many prominent political leaders. In recent years, it has generated a rich yet underexposed academic debate. This Article seeks to draw attention to and further that debate.

This Article has three main parts. The first is a survey of responses in academic literature to the question "who interprets?" The author argues that although judicial supremacy is widely embraced as a model of constitutional interpretation, other accounts raise serious challenges to its descriptive power and normative appeal. The second part of …

Should Trade Secret Appropriation Be Criminalized, I. Neel Chatterjee Jan 1997

Should Trade Secret Appropriation Be Criminalized, I. Neel Chatterjee

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Trade secret law is a rapidly developing and increasingly popular system of intellectual property which strikes a tenuous balance between individual profit benefit through secrecy and maximization of social welfare. In doing so, trade secret law adopts some property-based and some liability-based principles. This Article argues that criminalizing trade secret appropriation unjustifiably extends protection as a property-based concept beyond economically efficient goals. The author concludes that punitive damages within the context of civil liability are a more economically efficient means to deter unauthorized use of trade secrets and "socially blameworthy" conduct.

Lessons From Oz: Quantitative Guidelines For Children's Educational Television, Angela J. Campbell Jan 1997

Lessons From Oz: Quantitative Guidelines For Children's Educational Television, Angela J. Campbell

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

To implement the Children's Television Act of 1990, the Federal Communications Commission recently adopted a guideline assuring license renewal to television stations that air three hours per week of children's educational programming. This Article explores the likely success of the guideline by examining Australia's long experience with a children's television quota. The author argues that Australia's experience suggests that quantitative guidelines can lead to an increase in the quantity of children's educational programming. At the same time, as in Australia, broadcasters may try to count as children's educational programming programs that are not specifically designed for children, are of low …

Radio Advertising Decision-Making In The Tri-State --: Huntington, West Virginia; Ashland, Kentucky; And Ironton, Ohio Radio Market, Terry L. Hapney Jr.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Modern radio came into being November 2, 1920, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The nation’s first federally-licensed radio station, KDKA, broadcast the Harding-Cox election returns:

These words changed our world forever…’This is KDKA of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We shall now broadcast the election returns…’ (StratiComm America 2).

The first radio announcer, or disc jockey, was ham radio operator Frank Conrad of Westinghouse. In 1919, Conrad played records supplied by a local store in exchange for free plugs on the air, the equivalent of today’s bartering or trading in which stations receive merchandise from a business …

Community Needs To Remove Rose-Tinted Glasses To Examine Ethnicity, Create Environments For Success, Scharron Clayton Jan 1997

Community Needs To Remove Rose-Tinted Glasses To Examine Ethnicity, Create Environments For Success, Scharron Clayton

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The purpose of this paper is to briefly explore the topic of ethnicity as it relates to successful living within a community. In light of the work of historians such as Schlesinger 1993), and contemporary pieces by Desouza (1995), and Herrnstein and Murray (1994), this is timely. I can recall a conversation with a local CEO who was convinced that the "American Identity" was being threatened by any focus on ethnicity and difference. His fear of the changing fabric of society, forced him to embrace a position which would cling to the past systems of domination by promoting a "we're …

Classicism And Christianity In Hélisenne De Crenne's Les Angoysses Doulouoreuses Qui Procedent D'Amours, Megan Conway Jan 1997

Classicism And Christianity In Hélisenne De Crenne's Les Angoysses Doulouoreuses Qui Procedent D'Amours, Megan Conway

Quidditas

Although Renaissance philosophers and theologians like Marsilio Ficino strove mightily to show Plato and Plotinus compatible with Saint Paul, writers of popular prose and poetry suffered no such qualms. While it appears curious and often shocking to modern readers to find reference to the apostles and Apollo in successive paragraphs, many Renaissance writer followed Dante's example in The Divine Comedy and saw nothing incongruous in embracing classical mythology while espousing Christian doctrine. A fascinating example of this combination of traditions is the popular French work of a female author of the early Renaissance—Hélisenne de Crenne's Les Angoysses douloureuses qui procedent …

To "Eche Out Our Performance With Your Mind": Making Performance Pedagogy Intellectually Sound, Sharon A. Beehler Jan 1997

To "Eche Out Our Performance With Your Mind": Making Performance Pedagogy Intellectually Sound, Sharon A. Beehler

Quidditas

When the Chorus in Henry V instructs the audience about what to expect in Act III, it reiterates the point made earlier in the play that the spectator must take an active role in helping the players achieve their goal of presenting an effective drama: "eche out our performance with your mind" (line 35), says the Chorus. This would seem to be a commonplace of theater theory, but unfortunately, recent attempt by some teachers to incorporate televisual performance activities into the Shakespeare classroom have all too often neglected the intellectual participation of students with "performance texts," that is, with printed …

1997 Allen D. Breck Award Winner: A Woman's Life As Ancillary Text: The Printed Texts Of The Biography Of Elizabeth Tanfield Caary, Jesse G. Swan

Quidditas

As the first woman to write and publish an original play in English, Elizabeth Tanfield Cary, Viscountess Falkland, has become the subject of increased attention and appreciation over the last few decades. Since a major reason for studying Cary has been the feminist motivation to document women's contributions to the English language and its literature and culture, biographically informed criticism has naturally drawn much attention. With Cary, biographically informed criticism has been fostered by the existence of the Life of Cary, a biography written within a couple of decades of her death primarily by one of her four conventual daughters, …
