Is There A Right To Physician-Assisted Suicide?, J. David Bleich Jan 1997

Is There A Right To Physician-Assisted Suicide?, J. David Bleich

Fordham Urban Law Journal

In Part I, the author explains that it is the adjudication between the conflicting claims of individual liberty, personal autonomy and self-determination versus the preservation of life as a societal value that is at the core of the issue posed by physician-assisted suicide. In Part II, author makes the case against suicide, noting that liberty is not absolute and the state retains powers of sovereignty to curtail an individual’s liberty in the face of a countervailing state interest. In Part III, the author discusses the relevant case law relating to the withdrawal of medical treatment. Part IV concludes with a …

Supporting Student Teachers In An Urban, Multicultural Setting, Brian White

Peer Reviewed Articles

There is nothing unusual or startling about Grand Rapids Central High School, an urban school like hundreds of others across the country. But like most preservice teachers, the students in our teacher education program at Grand Valley State University have had very little experience in urban schools, and many find the prospect of student teaching at Central frightening indeed.

Economics Of Quebec Separatism, J. Scott Attenborough Jan 1997

Economics Of Quebec Separatism, J. Scott Attenborough

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The status of the economies in various regions of Canada is continually a key concern for the nation's political leaders. Historically disparities have existed between regions as the nation developed over time. The fact that the regions have not developed equally has been highlighted by the Premiers of each province bringing their plight before Canada's parliament.

One region that has recently lagged behind the economic development of most other regions is the province of Quebec. Although quite competitive with the overall Canadian economy until 1960, the Quebec economy now lags behind overall national economic performance. Quebec's unemployment rate remains high …

Professional Staff Images, Bsc 125th Anniversary, Professional Staff Caucus

A Selection of Works on the History of Buffalo State

"Many professional departments and professionals working in academic departments exist on this campus, presently sixty-two in all, yet these departments do not constitute barriers. They are necessary for a balanced community. This book is the attempt of the Professional Staff Caucus to recognize all the Professionals in Buffalo State College's sesiquicenntial [125th] year. We did our best to assure that the information was correct, given what records still exist in paper form and in people's memories. We would like to thank all who consented to having their photographs taken and especially to those who contributed to, or wrote each of …

Alaska Justice Forum ; Vol. 13, No. 4 (Winter 1997), Claus N/A, N/A Bureau Of Justice Statistics

Vols 11-20 (1994-2004)

In the Winter 1997 issue of the Alaska Justice Forum, a certified interpreter for the federal and California court systems corrects misunderstandings about the nature of language interpretation in legal proceedings, observing that accurately interpreting to and from English in proceedings requires a language proficiency often misunderstood by participants in the court proceedings, and that lack of proficient interpretation can give rise to errors which threaten the integrity of the justice process. An accompanying sidebar describes the legal interpretation practice in Alaska courts and other Alaska justice agencies. A related article highlights two committees working on the problems presented by …

Variations In The Frequency-Magnitude Distribution With Depth In Two Volcanic Areas: Mount St. Helens, Washington, And Mt. Spurr, Alaska, Stefan Wiemer, Stephen R. Mcnutt Jan 1997

Variations In The Frequency-Magnitude Distribution With Depth In Two Volcanic Areas: Mount St. Helens, Washington, And Mt. Spurr, Alaska, Stefan Wiemer, Stephen R. Mcnutt

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The frequency-magnitude distribution of earthquakes, characterized using the b-value, is examined as a function of space beneath Mount St. Helens (1988–1996), and Mt. Spurr (1991–1995). At Mount St. Helens, two volumes of anomalously high b (b > 1.3) can be observed at depths of 2.6–3.6 km below the crater floor and below 6.4 km. These anomalies coincide with (1) the depth of vesiculation of ascending magma, and (2) the suggested location of a magma chamber at Mount St. Helens. Study of Mt. Spurr reveals an area of high b-value (b ≥ 1.3) at a depth of about 2.3–4.5 …

Observations At Costa Rican Volcano Offer Clues To Causes Of Eruptions, M. Hagerty, S. Y. Schwartz, M. Protti, Timothy H. Dixon, M. Garcés

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Recent measurements of ground deformation at an active volcano show great promise for elucidating the processes that lead to volcanic eruptions. A long-term effort to continuously monitor ground deformation over a very wide bandwidth using state-of-the-art geodetic, seismic, and acoustic instruments at Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica is producing high-quality recordings of harmonic tremor and explosive events and offers an exciting opportunity to explore possible lunar periodicities in volcanic eruptivity.

Out Yet Unseen: A Racial Critique Of Gay And Lesbian Legal Theory And Political Discourse, Darren L. Hutchinson Jan 1997

Out Yet Unseen: A Racial Critique Of Gay And Lesbian Legal Theory And Political Discourse, Darren L. Hutchinson

Faculty Articles

The symbolic meaning of the phrase "tongues untied" has grown to identify a small, yet expanding, cultural, intellectual, and artistic "movement" aimed at revealing - or ending the silence around - the interactions of race, class, gender, and sexuality, what one participant in the movement described as "the transformation of silence into language and action." The work of this movement contrasts starkly with that of the "dominant" gay and lesbian culture and scholarship, where issues of racial and class subordination are neglected or rejected and where a universal gay and lesbian experience is assumed. The work of this movement highlights …

Law And Religion In Israel And Iran: How The Integration Of Secular And Spiritual Laws Affects Human Rights And The Potential For Violence, S. I. Strong Jan 1997

Law And Religion In Israel And Iran: How The Integration Of Secular And Spiritual Laws Affects Human Rights And The Potential For Violence, S. I. Strong

Faculty Articles

Because law and religion are by themselves complex cultural and historical issues, any study of the interaction between the two will be at least as complicated. If one is to understand both a State's current religio-legal regime and what reform measures are most likely to succeed there, it is necessary to understand at least a little of the nation's history and majority religion. Therefore, Part I of this article provides a brief sketch of the principles of the two majority religions at issue in this discussion and an overview of the history of both Israel and Iran. It explains why …

Natural Law And Birthright Citizenship In Calvin's Case (1608), Polly J. Price Jan 1997

Natural Law And Birthright Citizenship In Calvin's Case (1608), Polly J. Price

Faculty Articles

The roots of United States conceptions of birthright citizenship lie deep in England's medieval past. This Article explores Calvin's Case (1608) and the early modem common-law mind that first articulated a theoretical basis for territorial birthright citizenship. Involving all the important English judges of the day, Calvin's Case addressed the question of whether persons born in Scotland, following the descent of the English crown to the Scottish King James VI in 1603, would be considered "subjects" in England. Calvin's Case determined that all persons born within any territory held by the King of England were to enjoy the benefits of …

Understanding Speech, Language Differences To Gain Sensitivity To Other Ethnicity, Jim Day Jan 1997

Understanding Speech, Language Differences To Gain Sensitivity To Other Ethnicity, Jim Day

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

As I reflected on the direction I would take in writing this paper, I remembered the incident I shared. Since my field of study is communication, I thought it would be a good place to begin discussing my perspectives on ethnicity and its impact on my view of society. In his writings, Benjamin Whorf (1956), following extensive studies of the Hopi, proposed a theory based on the relationship between language and culture. He concluded that a person's vocabulary and ability to communicate is dependent on the culture of that person. If we consider language and culture as components of ethnicity, …

Issue Area Five: How Do We Develop A Global Perspective In Helping People Understand Our Interconnectedness?, Daniel Smith, Pochy Morales-Gomez Jan 1997

Issue Area Five: How Do We Develop A Global Perspective In Helping People Understand Our Interconnectedness?, Daniel Smith, Pochy Morales-Gomez

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Five underlying premises to help people develop a global perspective and understand our interconnectedness. These premises are important in the process of resolving the issue:

1. Human beings are much more alike than they are different.

2. We are globally interconnected.

3. It is important to understand our interconnectedness.

4. Interconnectedness should be based on egalitarian partnerships.

5. Isolation is no longer possible or desirable.

These premises led to a discussion of the true meaning of a global perspective. Types of issues that connect us are ecology, economics, genetics, religion, media, technology, art, and education.

Virginia Law Reports And Records, 1776-1800, William Hamilton Bryson Jan 1997

Virginia Law Reports And Records, 1776-1800, William Hamilton Bryson

Law Faculty Publications

In 1607 Virginia was settled by a London-based corporation, and the English settlers brought with them the municipal law and legal institutions of England. It was specifically required by the instructions to the Virginia Company that litigation was to be settled "as near to the common laws of England and the equity thereof as may be". In 1632 when commissioners were appointed to hold the monthly courts (later renamed the county courts), their commissions required them to execute the office of justice of the peace and to act "as near as may be after the laws of the realm of …

Islam, Law And Custom: Redefining Muslim Women's Rights, Azizah Y. Al-Hibri Jan 1997

Islam, Law And Custom: Redefining Muslim Women's Rights, Azizah Y. Al-Hibri

Law Faculty Publications

In discussing personal status codes, the article focuses on three specific issues: the right of a woman to contract her own marriage, the duty of the wife to obey her husband, and the right of the wife to initiate divorce. There are several good reasons for focusing on these issues. Foremost among them is the fact that they have been and continue to be of great concern to Muslim women. Another reason is that despite their diverse subject matter, these three issues are based on the same jurisprudential foundation. Hence, our discussion and critical analysis of that foundation will have …
