Evaluation Of High Performance Fortran Through Application Kernels, Hon W. Yau, Geoffrey C. Fox, Ken Hawick Jan 1997

Evaluation Of High Performance Fortran Through Application Kernels, Hon W. Yau, Geoffrey C. Fox, Ken Hawick

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Since the definition of the High Performance Fortran (HPF) standard, we have been maintaining a suite of application kernel codes with the aim of using them to evaluate the available compilers. This paper presents the results and conclusions from this study, for sixteen codes, on compilers from IBM, DEC, and the Portland Group Inc. (PGI), and on three machines: a DEC Alphafarm, an IBM SP-2, and a Cray T3D. From this, we hope to show the prospective HPF user that scalable performance is possible with modest effort, yet also where the current weaknesses lay.

Geographical and logical growth of the World-Wide Web is accompanied by a fast technological development. Web can be successfully used as a platform for implementation of diverse applications. Distributed and collaborative systems are among the most challenging Web applications. TANGO is an integration platform which enables implementation of Web-based collaborative environments. The system provides means for fast integration of Web- and non-Web-applications into one multi-user collaborative systems. In this paper we describe the functional model, requirements, system design and certain implementation issues of the TANGO system.

The Legal Characterization Of God In The Pentateuch, James W. Watts Jan 1997

The Legal Characterization Of God In The Pentateuch, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

The Pentateuch develops God's character in stories of divine creation and destruction, promise and fulfillment, battle and redemption. The laws of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers supplement such direct characterization by the impressions provided by YHWH's speech. Speeches always indirectly characterize their speaker by providing the basis for inferring the kind of person who talks this way. So the law codes voiced directly by God provide a powerful impression of the divine character.

A Compiler Algorithm For Optimizing Locality In Loop Nests, Mahmut Kandemir, J. Ramanujam, Alok Choudhary Jan 1997

A Compiler Algorithm For Optimizing Locality In Loop Nests, Mahmut Kandemir, J. Ramanujam, Alok Choudhary

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

This paper describes an algorithm to optimize cache locality in scientific codes on uniprocessor and multiprocessor machines. A distinctive characteristic of our algorithm is that it considers loop and data layout transformations in a unified framework. We illustrate through examples that our approach is very effective at reducing cache misses and tile size sensitivity of blocked loop nests; and can optimize nests for which optimization techniques based on loop transformations alone are not successful. An important special case is the one in which data layouts of some arrays are fixed and cannot be changed. We show how our algorithm can …

American Income Inequality In A Cross-National Perspective: Why Are We So Different?, Timothy M. Smeeding Jan 1997

American Income Inequality In A Cross-National Perspective: Why Are We So Different?, Timothy M. Smeeding

Center for Policy Research

Increasingly the rich nations of the world face a common set of social and economic issues: the cost of population aging, a growing number of single parent families, the growing majority of two-earner families, increasing numbers of immigrants from poorer nations, and in particular, rising economic inequality generated by skill-based technological change, international trade and other factors. All of these nations have also designed systems of social protection to shield their citizen against the risk of a fall in economic status due to unemployment, divorce, disability, retirement, and death of a spouse. The interaction of these economic and demographic forces …

Effects Of A Sugar-Free Hypoallerdenic Diet And Nutrtional Supplementation On Ulcerative Colitis, William (Bill) H. Williams, Robert C. Atkins Md, Joel S. Edman Jan 1997

Effects Of A Sugar-Free Hypoallerdenic Diet And Nutrtional Supplementation On Ulcerative Colitis, William (Bill) H. Williams, Robert C. Atkins Md, Joel S. Edman

Publications and Research

Few clinical studies have found that dietary or nutritional factors significantly influence ulcerative colitis (UC}(l,2}. It is noteworthy, however, that a range of factors have been researched including dietary components such as refined sugars (3,4}, allergenic foods (1,5,6} and fast foods (7), as well as nutritional supplement effects from fish oil (2), zinc (8), glutamine (9), folate (10, 11} and alpha-tocopherolquinone (12}. More recently investigators have also examined the interelationships between bowel flora and UC, including factors such as flora changes (13,14), endotoxemia (15} and supplementation effects with Lactobacillous species (16,17). These studies taken together and a recent review of …

Stochastic Modeling Of Active Life And Its Expectancy, Douglas A. Wolf, Sarah B. Laditka Jan 1997

Stochastic Modeling Of Active Life And Its Expectancy, Douglas A. Wolf, Sarah B. Laditka

Center for Policy Research

The concept of “active” (or “disability-free”) life, and its average value, has proven to be a useful index of public health and of quality of life for populations. A question of great interest in recent years is whether recent trends towards longer life expectancy have been accompanied by comparable increases in active life expectancy. Past research on patterns and trends of active and “inactive” life has focused almost exclusively on the expectancy—or, the average value—of years spent with and without disability. This measure is useful for actuarial calculations, for example analysis of the insurance value of programs that provide long-term …

Diel Activity Patterns And Host Preferences Of Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes (Diptera: Glossinidae) Along The Shores Of Lake Victoria, Kenya, M. M. Mohamed-Ahmed, A. Odulaja

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Diurnal activity patterns and host preference of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes Newstead were studied in forest and linear habitats along Lake Victoria shore, Kenya. The objective was to identify the preferred hosts of G. f. fuscipes, the emanations of which may be attractive to this species. Hourly catches of flies in biconical traps were related to changes in the weather and the prevalence of hosts in the vicinity of traps. Flies were mainly active between 0800 and 1600 h, with males peaking around 1100 h and females around 1300 h. Activity of flies correlated directly with light intensity and temperature, but …

Introduction To Part One, Sheila Carapico Jan 1997

Introduction To Part One, Sheila Carapico

Political Science Faculty Publications

The end of the Cold War brought with it a temporary euphoria about prospects for a worldwide "third wave" of democratization to sweep the globe. If civil society had triumphed in the former Soviet bloc, perhaps political liberalism would spread elsewhere. No sooner had the sweet taste of victory over communism subsided, however, than Western observers turned their attention to another, allegedly uniquely, antidemocratic current- Islam-whose civilizational values seem to clash with Western liberalism even more fundamentally than Marxism. Whereas people in other parts of the world crave civil society, so the argument goes, political openings in the Muslim world …

Balancing State Sovereignty And Competition: An Analysis Of The Impact Of Seminole Tribe On The Antitrust State Action Immunity Doctrine, Susan Beth Farmer Jan 1997

Balancing State Sovereignty And Competition: An Analysis Of The Impact Of Seminole Tribe On The Antitrust State Action Immunity Doctrine, Susan Beth Farmer

Faculty Scholarship

The great impact of the Seminole Tribe v. Florida decision will likely be felt in the range of federal causes of action that have exclusive remedies in federal court. Antitrust cases are among such causes of action. In seeking to avoid antitrust liability, defendants have invoked the protections of the antitrust state action doctrine, which immunizes only that anticompetitive activity imposed and supervised by states. This immunity bars suits against state and private actors alike. After Seminole Tribe, state defendants will escape all antitrust liability, whether or not the traditional requirements of the state action doctrine have been met. …

Romanian Bankruptcy Law: A Central European Example, Samuel Bufford Jan 1997

Romanian Bankruptcy Law: A Central European Example, Samuel Bufford

Faculty Scholarship

Romania now has one of the best-drafted bankruptcy laws in Central and Eastern Europe. The new Romanian bankruptcy law went into effect on August 26, 1995 and replaced the previous bankruptcy provisions in §695-987 of the Romanian Commercial Code, which was translated from the Italian Commercial Code of 1884 and enacted in 1887. While the commercial code fell into disuse during the Communist era, it was never repealed. After the Romanian revolution and the demise of Nicolae Ceauşescu at the end of 1989, the commercial code as well as the civil code remained good law and needed only to be …

The Buck Does Not Stop Here: Supervisory Liability In Section 1983 Cases, Kit Kinports Jan 1997

The Buck Does Not Stop Here: Supervisory Liability In Section 1983 Cases, Kit Kinports

Faculty Scholarship

The appropriate standard for supervisory liability in Section 1983 cases has been a source of considerable disagreement among federal courts of appeals. In the absence of established Supreme Court authority on the subject, courts have rejected vicarious and negligence liability in favor of a higher culpability requirement, but they have not agreed on precisely what form this higher standard should take. In this article, the Author addresses the need for a uniform standard consistent with the statute's twin goals of compensating the victims of constitutional violations and deterring constitutional infractions.

The author notes at the outset that lower courts have …

Dual Sovereignty And The Double Jeopardy Clause: If At First You Don't Convict, Try, Try, Again , Robert Matz

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Note argues that the application of the dual sovereignty doctrine to cases involving successive state and federal prosecutions, where the initial prosecution resulted in an acquittal, violates the Double Jeopardy Clause of the Fifth Amendment. Part I discusses the rationale for the prohibition against double jeopardy and the principle of dual sovereignty. Part II outlines the Supreme Court jurisprudence regarding successive prosecutions brought by independent sovereigns. Part III reviews the arguments against applying the dual sovereignty doctrine in the context of successive prosecutions where the initial prosecution resulted in an acquittal and proposes that the Supreme Court reconsider the …

Peer Harassment Under Title Ix Of The Education Amendments Of 1972: Where's The Intent, Chantal N. Senatus

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Note argues that in peer harassment cases, school districts should face liability under a “known or should have known” standard where the school’s intent to discriminate may be determined by the circumstances of the case. Part I provides a brief historical overview of Title IX and the traditional forms of hostile environment harassment that it has been used to combat, demonstrating that courts use the statute to punish harassment where the school has reason to know of the harassment and fails to take appropriate action. Part II explores a subset of hostile environment cases where U.S. circuit courts are …

The Public Hospital, Lewis R. Goldfrank, M.D. Jan 1997

The Public Hospital, Lewis R. Goldfrank, M.D.

Fordham Urban Law Journal

The author traces the development of public and private hospitals. In particular, the Article looks at the changing role of the hospital and the development of federal legislation. Next, the author reviews the functions of the public hospital, which include providing care for the poor, prisoners, psychiatric patients, trauma patients, and addicts. A public hospital also has the role of providing emergency and trauma care, while serving a role in disaster management and as the training grounds for the next generation of medical professionals. The closure of public hospitals has become frequent and it does not appear that the current …
