Reaction As Image: Comic Books And American Life, 1940-1955, William S. Bush Jan 1997

Reaction As Image: Comic Books And American Life, 1940-1955, William S. Bush

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The comic book became a mass medium during a series of defining moments in twentieth-century American history. By telling and retelling narratives of individual achievement during the Great Depression, and tales of patriotism during World War II, comic books gained a popular audience rivaling that of agenda-setting national periodicals such as Life or The Saturday Evening Post. In the first postwar decade, however, publishers experimented with themes of crime, horror, teen romance, and social satire in ways that provoked a wave of public hostility. Crusading psychiatrists, politicians, civic groups, and religious leaders led a campaign against the industry that revealed …

The Effectiveness Of Court Appointed Special Advocates (Casas) To Assist In Permanency Planning, Cynthia Ann Calkins Jan 1997

The Effectiveness Of Court Appointed Special Advocates (Casas) To Assist In Permanency Planning, Cynthia Ann Calkins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The effectiveness of permanency planning, which refers to efforts to move children through the court system in a timely and efficient manner, was analyzed by comparing outcome and process measures among a group of children having a court appointed special advocate (CASA) ordered and assigned to their case, a group of children who had CASA services ordered, but never assigned to their case (CONA), and a group of children who never had a CASA ordered nor assigned to their case (NO CASA). It was found that those cases having CASA involvement had significantly fewer placements, tended to be more likely …

Yield Management And Its Practical Application In Hotels, Jeffrey M. Caneen Jan 1997

Yield Management And Its Practical Application In Hotels, Jeffrey M. Caneen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Yield management is an approach to pricing that is often used by industries in which the marginal production cost is relatively high, while the marginal sales cost is relatively low. The hotel industry meets this criterion. Industry publications demonstrate a keen interest in the revenue enhancing potential of yield management, but there has been little research on the extent to which this pricing technique is actually utilized by hotel general managers; This research tests the proposition that there are eight basic elements of yield management in hotels. The degree to which yield management is practiced is indicated by the extent …

Capability Of Native Yucca Mountain Microorganisms To Corrode 1020 Carbon Steel, Patricia Russo Castro Jan 1997

Capability Of Native Yucca Mountain Microorganisms To Corrode 1020 Carbon Steel, Patricia Russo Castro

Test systems composed of a 1020 carbon steel coupon immersed in soft agar or soft agar and ground rock were designed to evaluate the biofilm formation and corrosion capabilities of these microorganisms at elevated temperature. Results indicated that incubation at 50{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C decreased the ability of these microorganisms to corrode carbon steel immersed in soft agar. However, corrosion rates …

The Relationship Between Plasma Potassium And The Ventilatory Drift During Continuous Steady State Exercise, Jutta Dinenna Jan 1997

The Relationship Between Plasma Potassium And The Ventilatory Drift During Continuous Steady State Exercise, Jutta Dinenna

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recently, potassium has been investigated as a possible metabolite involved in the control exercise ventilation. Graded and incremental cycle tests using healthy subjects show a strong correlation between plasma potassium (K{dollar}\sp+{dollar}) and ventilation (V{dollar}\sb{\rm E}).{dollar} However, the role of potassium has not been investigated during steady state exercise. During steady state exercise researchers have observed a ventilatory drift that cannot be accounted for by lactate or expired carbon dioxide (VCO{dollar}\sb2).{dollar} The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between plasma K{dollar}\sp+{dollar} levels and the ventilatory drift during steady state exercise. Participants cycled at 60% VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} max. for 30 …

A Re-Investigation Of Hick's Law And Its Implications For Information Processing, Malcolm R Dunn Jan 1997

A Re-Investigation Of Hick's Law And Its Implications For Information Processing, Malcolm R Dunn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The current study investigated the extent to which challenging the informational demands of the cognitive system impact reaction time in a linear, systematic fashion. Specifically, the study examined the effects of simultaneously challenging all three stages of the information processing. A 3 (Response Selection) x 2 (Stimulus Identification) x 2 (Response Programming) ANOVA with repeated measures was used to analyze mean reaction time data. The results indicated that, to a point, information processing increases in a linear, systematic fashion. However, when the system is substantially stressed, speed of processing is negatively impacted. This results in an over-additive increase in reaction …

Compact Routing In Fault-Tolerant Distributed Systems, James Edward Lawrence Jan 1997

Compact Routing In Fault-Tolerant Distributed Systems, James Edward Lawrence

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A compact routing algorithm is a routing algorithm which reduces the space complexity of all-pairs shortest path routing. Compact routing protocols in distributed systems have been studied extensively as an attractive alternative to the traditional method of all-pairs shortest path routing. The use of compact routing protocols have several advantages. Compact routing schemes are not only more memory-efficient, but provide faster routing table lookup, more efficient broadcast scheme, and allow for a more scalable network. These routing schemes still maintain optimal or near-optimal routing paths. However, most of the compact routing protocols are not fault-tolerant. This thesis will first report …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recent research regarding persons with developmental disabilities has focused on the effects of choice availability on adaptive and maladaptive behavior. Because degree of choice within one's living environment is considered a key element of quality of life, it seems important to evaluate this variable and its relationship to adaptive and maladaptive behavior. In this preliminary study, direct-care staff members in a group-home setting were taught to increase choice opportunities in the areas of eating, leisure, and personal hygiene for residents with mild, moderate, or severe mental retardation. This investigation also examined the effects of increased choice availability on residents' adaptive …

Generation X: A Social Movement Toward Cynicism, Paula Gottula Miles Jan 1997

Generation X: A Social Movement Toward Cynicism, Paula Gottula Miles

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the past twenty-five years Americans have shifted from modern values of reason, science, and progress, to postmodern values of cynicism and relativism. Due to the different social climate and the ubiquitous mass media, Generation Xers--those born between 1960 and 1980--are the first to be socialized from infancy to possess postmodern values. Because of this dramatic shift in values, Generation X can be viewed as an intellectual or cultural social movement, in the sense of a social movement being a collective change in values over time. This study examines the differing values of Generation X by comparing their values to …

The Vietnam War: A Comparison Of Interpretations, David Scott Morokoff Jan 1997

The Vietnam War: A Comparison Of Interpretations, David Scott Morokoff

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is based on a quantitative analysis of Time magazine's coverage of the Vietnam War. It demonstrates that Time held a pro-war bias in 1967, was neutral during 1968, and turned strongly against the war from 1969 through 1974. From mid-1969 on, some articles factually misrepresented what was happening in Vietnam in such a way as to promote the goals of the anti-war movement. If events admitted of both a pro-war and an anti-war interpretation Time published almost exclusively the anti-war view. By 1972, administration supporters had published a large body of verifiable evidence (summarized in chapter 3) demonstrating …

When Playing God: Concerning Artificial Reproduction, Christina Ann Brandom Sessa Jan 1997

When Playing God: Concerning Artificial Reproduction, Christina Ann Brandom Sessa

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is a discussion about new reproductive technologies and the ethical implications of those technologies. Until now, fetal personhood was the focus of pro-choice and pro-life groups battling about abortion versus women's rights. However, new reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization and cryopreservation further complicate the foundation upon which traditional abortion arguments are based. The focus of the argument should be shifted from fetal personhood to a more comprehensive argument for the respect of the sanctity of human life. This shift would force society to address the more crucial issues which have led us to abortion and new …
