Sino-North American International Joint Ventures And Performance A Case Of Different Expectations, Julius H. Johnson Jr., Shuming Zhao

UMSL Global

This study examines North American firms that have international joint venture (IJV) relationships in China and Chinese firms who have IJV relationships in North America. Data was gathered from the North American partner (n=50) and from the Chinese partner (n=57) to test several hypotheses regarding the reliability and comparability of various general satisfaction measures and specific indicators of IJV performance. The findings of this comparative study provide confirmatory evidence for the importance of several indicators of UV performance for the partners of IJV s from a developed and developing country perspective and the criteria that SinoNorth American managers use to …

Usable Pasts, Tad Tuleja Jan 1997

Usable Pasts, Tad Tuleja

All USU Press Publications

In Usable Pasts, fourteen authors examine the manipulation of traditional expressions among a variety of groups from the United States and Canada: the development of a pictorial style by Navajo weavers in response to traders, Mexican American responses to the appropriation of traditional foods by Anglos, the expressive forms of communication that engender and sustain a sense of community in an African American women's social club and among elderly Yiddish folksingers in Miami Beach, the incorporation of mass media images into the "C&Ts" (customs and traditions) of a Boy Scout troop, the changing meaning of their defining Exodus-like migration to …

Biological Response To Particulate Debris: In Vitro And In Vivo Studies, A. S. Shanbhag, J. E. Dowd, J. J. Jacobs, D. M. Tramaglini, T. T. Glant, J. Black, H. E. Rubash Jan 1997

Biological Response To Particulate Debris: In Vitro And In Vivo Studies, A. S. Shanbhag, J. E. Dowd, J. J. Jacobs, D. M. Tramaglini, T. T. Glant, J. Black, H. E. Rubash

Cells and Materials

In this study, we compared the results of a human monocyte in vitro model and a canine in vivo model, to evaluate the response to different types of particulate wear debris. Both the in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that titanium-6 aluminum-4 vanadium (TiAIV), ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and other particulate wear debris are stimulatory to macrophages and elicit release of several identifiable mediators involved in periprosthetic inflammation and bone resorption. Further, in the in vivo studies, these same particles initiated the formation of interfacial membranes which were histologically and biochemically similar to those seen in clinically failed …

The Comedia In Amsterdam, 1609-1621: Rodenburgh's Translation Of Aguilar's La Venganza Honrosa, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 1997

The Comedia In Amsterdam, 1609-1621: Rodenburgh's Translation Of Aguilar's La Venganza Honrosa, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

In the seventeenth century, the Spanish comedia was not only known outside of Spain, it informed other national literatures and was even performed abroad, either in Spanish or in translation. In most cases, it was received into an established cultural environment, such as Corneille's adaptations in France; its appearance was not considered politically inflammatory in any sense as the host cultures were able to deal with the comedia as only a literary phenomenon. In the case of the Low Countries before 1648, however, the comedia was translated and performed in a colony in more or less open rebellion against Spain …

How Effective Are The Things People Say To Apologize? Effects Of The Realization Of The Apology Speech Act., Steven J. Scher, John M. Darley

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

The Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Project (Blum-Kulka, House, & Kasper, 1989a) has identified five components of an "apology speech act set": five strategies that speakers use to apologize. This study examines the effects of four of those strategies (illocutionary force indicating device, expression of responsibility, promise of forebearance, and offer of repair) on the judgments made by hearers about the speaker and about the apology. Each of the strategies is shown to have an independent effect in improving reactions to the speaker. Further, the magnitude of these effects appear to be roughly similar for each of the strategies. The things …

Consumption Of Over-The-Counter Drugs And Attitudes Towards Over-The-Counter Drug Advertising: A Comparison Between The United States And Hong Kong, Kara K. Chan, Louisa Ha Jan 1997

Consumption Of Over-The-Counter Drugs And Attitudes Towards Over-The-Counter Drug Advertising: A Comparison Between The United States And Hong Kong, Kara K. Chan, Louisa Ha

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

A survey of 547 adults from the United States and Hong Kong was conducted to compare their perceptions about functions and consequences of OTC drug advertising and medical decisions when encountering health problems. Results indicate that American and Hong Kong consumers were very similar in their overall perception of functions and consequences of OTC drugs. A large majority of American consumers relied heavily on OTC drugs for all five types of selected health problems in this study. In contrast, Hong Kong consumers took OTC drugs only for specific illness.

Boundaries Of Trust And Confidence: Negotiating Evaluation And Research Constraints In The Context Of Kentucky's Systemic Reform, Lois Adams-Rodgers, Jane Clark Lindle Jan 1997

Boundaries Of Trust And Confidence: Negotiating Evaluation And Research Constraints In The Context Of Kentucky's Systemic Reform, Lois Adams-Rodgers, Jane Clark Lindle

Publications

Kentucky's systemic reform initiative has been heralded as one of the more comprehensive and well-sustained reforms in recent history. To evaluate the course of this reform, the challenges associated with researching and evaluating a statewide systemic reform effort are detailed here. By using a description of the politics of evaluating systemic policy at the state level, the paper attempts to fill the gap between the investigation of how policy works and the investigation of how policy is evaluated. An embedded, single-case design was used to study the program over a 3-month period. Examination of the system suggests that the political …

Beyond Burritos And Lumpia: Ethnic Identity As A Difference In Preservice Teacher Education, Sara Soledad Garcia, E. Litton Jan 1997

Beyond Burritos And Lumpia: Ethnic Identity As A Difference In Preservice Teacher Education, Sara Soledad Garcia, E. Litton

Teacher Education

Teachers play a pivotal role in society. On a daily basis they influence the futures of the children they encounter. Not only do they teach children how to read and write butteachers are also charged with the task of creating responsible citizens who should think critically about society. Teacher educators, and specifically those individuals charged with the task of preparing preservice teachers, have responsibilities similar to teachers in the field. Education, on any level, ought to be a transformative process.

Thus, the preparation of teachers as instruments of social change ought to be a central focus in preservice teacher education …

Community Needs To Remove Rose-Tinted Glasses To Examine Ethnicity, Create Environments For Success, Scharron Clayton Jan 1997

Community Needs To Remove Rose-Tinted Glasses To Examine Ethnicity, Create Environments For Success, Scharron Clayton

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The purpose of this paper is to briefly explore the topic of ethnicity as it relates to successful living within a community. In light of the work of historians such as Schlesinger 1993), and contemporary pieces by Desouza (1995), and Herrnstein and Murray (1994), this is timely. I can recall a conversation with a local CEO who was convinced that the "American Identity" was being threatened by any focus on ethnicity and difference. His fear of the changing fabric of society, forced him to embrace a position which would cling to the past systems of domination by promoting a "we're …

Science And International Regulatory Convergence, Jeffery Atik Jan 1997

Science And International Regulatory Convergence, Jeffery Atik

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

National regulation is frequently premised on scientific assump- tions; much of regulatory design is based on scientific findings. Con- sumer product, food and drug and workplace safety standards all depend on a scientific assessment of the risks faced by the public and of the efficacy of an adopted measure in addressing these risks. Build- ing codes, waste disposal protocols and mandated immunization of school children all proceed from the technical recommendations of the scientific community. In current Western society, a regulatory measure lacking a scien- tific basis will be subject to criticism and perhaps ridicule; it may be struck down …
