The Construction Of National Identity Through The Production Of Ritual And Spectacle: An Analysis Of National Day Parades In Singapore, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh Mar 1997

The Construction Of National Identity Through The Production Of Ritual And Spectacle: An Analysis Of National Day Parades In Singapore, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we adopt the view that 'nation' and 'national identity' are social constructions, created to serve ideological ends. We discuss this in the specific empirical context of Singapore's National Day parades. By drawing on officially produced souvenir programmes and magazines, newspaper reports, and interviews with participants and spectators, we analyse the parades between 1965 and 1994, showing how, as an annual ritual and landscape spectacle, the parades succeed to a large extent in creating a sense of awe, wonderment and admiration. Discussion focuses on four aspects of the celebrations: the site of the parades, their display and theatricality, …

Border Crossings: Conversations Across Disciplines And Cultures, Coco Fuso, Barbara Harlow, Micheal Awkward

ICS Fellow Lectures

The Spring 1997 PROVOST'S LECTURE SERIES, presented by the Institute for the Study of Culture and Society (ICS), offers a series of events which explore cultural interactions at the crossroads between social realities and cultural worlds. The series includes talks and events by interdisciplinary scholar and performance artist Coco Fusco; Third World scholar Barbara Harlow; and African-American cultural critic Michael Awkward.

Bringing these nationally known scholars and artists to our learning community at Bowling Green State University marks an attempt to "dare to cross borders" between the "known" and "unknown"; to gather a group of scholars, artists, and individuals who …

Vcu Voice (1997-02-10)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Cultural Discovery In Nursing Practice: The Experience Of Nurses' Who Work With Vietnamese, Evelyn Labun Dnsc, Mscn, Rn Feb 1997

Cultural Discovery In Nursing Practice: The Experience Of Nurses' Who Work With Vietnamese, Evelyn Labun Dnsc, Mscn, Rn

Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to generate a substantive theory of cultural discovery among nurses who work with Vietnamese. A grounded theory approach involving dimensional analysis was employed. A purposive sample of 27 registered nurses with experiences working with Vietnamese in acute care, community, and clinic settings was interviewed using a semi-structured format. Data were analyzed for dimensions as well as conditions, context, action strategies, and consequences. The theory of cultural discovery described how nurses learn to see their Vietnamese clients, how they saw a common humanity with others, and how they learn to see health. Nurses who made …

Constraints To Adoption Of Appropriate Breast Feeding Practices In A Squatter Settlement In Karachi, Pakistan, S H. Badruddin, S N. Inam, S Ramzanali, K Hendricks

Section of Internal Medicine

Appropriate breast feeding practices (ABFP) are important for successful lactation. Constraints to adoption of ABFP by mothers in a squatter settlement in Karachi, Pakistan are reported. One hundred and two mother-infant pairs were followed from birth to 16 weeks of age. Eighty-seven infants received prelacteal feeds of honey as a quasi-religious ritual, 16 received ghutti for "cleansing of stomach", other prelacteal feeds were given as substitutes for breast feeding. Twenty nine mothers initiated breast feeding within 4 hours of birth. Supplemental water was given to 53 infants; major reasons being mothers' perception of thirst and diarrhoea in the infant. Supplemental …

The Existing Indian Family Exception: Denying Tribal Rights Protected By The Indian Child Welfare Act, Wendy Therese Parnell Feb 1997

The Existing Indian Family Exception: Denying Tribal Rights Protected By The Indian Child Welfare Act, Wendy Therese Parnell

San Diego Law Review

The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), the author argues, was designed to prevent the removal of Indian children from their tribal culture. This was accomplished by providing minimum standards for removing Indian children from their homes, and by placing removal decisions within tribal jurisdiction. Courts, however, have applied an "existing Indian family" exception to the ICWA. This exception limits the application of the ICWA to cases where the Indian child is to be removed from an "existing Indian family," which excludes many removal cases, such as those where the child does not have a sufficient bond with an Indian parent. …

Conjuring Post-Worthlessness: Contemporary Web Art And The Postmodern Context: Part 1, Brett Stalbaum Jan 1997

Conjuring Post-Worthlessness: Contemporary Web Art And The Postmodern Context: Part 1, Brett Stalbaum

SWITCH

This article is part one of two of an analysis of the Jean Baudrillard's essay, "A Conjuration of Imbeciles". This essay compares the idea of art as a metaphor for French politics and the “uselessness” of contemporary art. A sense of postmodernism is drawn from that comparison and relates to contemporary art shared on the World Wide Web. Inevitable messages and meaning found in art will change, but economics and distribution continues to ground the economy on a global scale. Therefore, contemporary art represented on the web actively dates the practice of art, and the value of the practice is …

Where No Man Has Gone Before: Star Trek And The Death Of Cultural Relativism In America, Kenneth Anderson Jan 1997

Where No Man Has Gone Before: Star Trek And The Death Of Cultural Relativism In America, Kenneth Anderson

Book Reviews

This 1997 Times Literary Supplement (London) essay reviews the 1996 Star Trek (Next Generation) film First Contact, along with a book of essays in cultural studies about Star Trek (Taylor Harrison, et al., Enterprise Zones: Critical Positions on Star Trek). Of greatest long term interest in the moral and political philosophy of Star Trek is the so-called Prime Directive - non interference in local culture on local planets. This Vietnam era ethic of cultural relativism was prominent in the original 1960s Star Trek series as much for its assertion as for being regularly violated by Captain Kirk and his crew. …
