Falcon Gold - High Altitude Balloon Flight Test Of A Fully Integrated Spacecraft, Catherine O'Brien, James Smith, Jason Eisenreich, Ronald Humble, Dewey Parker Sep 1997

Falcon Gold - High Altitude Balloon Flight Test Of A Fully Integrated Spacecraft, Catherine O'Brien, James Smith, Jason Eisenreich, Ronald Humble, Dewey Parker

Small Satellite Conference

Students at the University of Colorado Springs (UCCS) and the United States Air Force Academy are designing, building and testing a spacecraft scheduled to fly on a Lockheed Martin Atlas/Centaur in October, 1997. The mission objective is to characterize the Global Positioning system (GPS) signal for use in orbit determination above the GPS constellation. An important step in this program is validating the design and functionality of the integrated spacecraft to reduce risk and ensure mission success. This leads to a dilemma balancing verification requirements and cost constraints. Students and faculty on the Falcon Gold team found a reasonable solution …

The High-Low Mix: A New Concept In Military Space, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane Sep 1997

The High-Low Mix: A New Concept In Military Space, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane

Small Satellite Conference

U.S. military forces are dependent on space systems for communications, navigation, and other critical support functions. As we learned in Desert Storm, however, the requirements for space capability are difficult to forecast and easy to underestimate. The current U.S. approach relies on high-capacity, high-orbit satellites. Such satellites are relatively cost-effective: the larger the satellite, the lower the cost per pound to orbit it, and the lower the cost per unit of capacity. However, cost-effectiveness is not always the appropriate standard for selecting military systems. Combat forces must be provided with the capability they need to operate and win. This paper …

Rapid Space Hardware Development Through Computer-Automated Testing, Dallas Masters, Kimberly Ruud Sep 1997

Rapid Space Hardware Development Through Computer-Automated Testing, Dallas Masters, Kimberly Ruud

Small Satellite Conference

FORTE, the Fast On-Orbit Recording of Transient Events small satellite designed and built by Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, is scheduled for launch in August, 1997. In the spirit of "better, cheaper, faster" satellites, the RF experiment hardware (receiver and trigger sub-systems) necessitated rapid prototype testing and characterization in the development of space-flight components. This was accomplished with the assembly of engineering model hardware prior to construction of flight hardware and the design of component-specific, PC-based software control libraries. Using the LabVIEW® graphical programming language, together with off-the-shelf PC digital I/O and GPIB interface cards, hardware control and complete …

Results Of Cold Gas And Resistojet Research For Small Satellite Application, T. Lawrence, M. Sweeting., M. Paul, R. Humble., J. Drum, J. Sellers

Small Satellite Conference

The paper summarises on-going research into low-cost propulsion system options for small satellite missions at the University of Surrey. Recent results of the engine flight qualification tests of a 0.01 N water resistojet for the UoSAT-12 minisatellite are discussed. The research programme (done in collaboration with the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) ) investigating nitrous oxide hybrids for small satellite upper stage application is described. A study (also done in collaboration with USAFA) studying the use of cold gas thrusters for microsatellite stationkeeping and constellation maintenance is presented. Future propulsion research work is summarised

A Reliability Model For The Design And Optimization Of Separated Spacecraft Interferometer Arrays, Cyrus Jilla, David Miller Sep 1997

A Reliability Model For The Design And Optimization Of Separated Spacecraft Interferometer Arrays, Cyrus Jilla, David Miller

Small Satellite Conference

The concept of using identical spacecraft for space-based optical interferometry is introduced. The built in redundancy of such a separated spacecraft interferometer (SSI) design not only improves the reliability of the system, but also improves system performance by placing the redundant components where they can be used during nominal operations. Five metrics have been developed to compare SSI designs. These include 1) total system reliability, 2) specific system reliability, 3) cost per image, 4) time to produce an image, and 5) reduced mission effectiveness due to partial system failure. The reliability model incorporates both combinatorial analysis and Markov modeling to …

Manufacturing The Orbcomm Constellation Satellites, John Stole, Kim Kubota, David Steffy Sep 1997

Manufacturing The Orbcomm Constellation Satellites, John Stole, Kim Kubota, David Steffy

Small Satellite Conference

Constructing a constellation of thirty-six ORBCOMM LEO digital communications satellites mandates an approach to manufacturing and testing significantly different from other small satellite programs. Schedule constraints forced overlap of development, qualification, and early production phases, and a production rate of four spacecraft per month. To avoid problems that could affect a large number of spacecraft, the program included a carefully designed flow of functional and environmental testing on development units and spacecraft, in addition to classical unit and system qualification programs. Although ORBCOMM's complex communications payload was particularly vulnerable to system problems, few emerged because of the thorough unit development …
