The All Encompassing Role And Function Of The Computing Coordinator In Western Australian Government Senior High Schools, Diana C. Brown

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this study was to determine the role and support afforded Computing Coordinators at Western Australian government senior high schools by undertaking a census survey. Previous studies performed by Weber and Kershaw (1990) and Kershaw and Weber {1991), portrayed the role of Computing Coordinators at Australian high schools as demanding a diversity of knowledge and skills in computer technology together with excellent management qualities. The literature also suggested that time management skills were a major factor in how effectively coordinators carried out the myriad of tasks expected of them. This study found that most Computing Coordinators considered their …

The Commodification Of Caring : A Hospice Case Study, Tina Marie Alford Williams Jan 1997

The Commodification Of Caring : A Hospice Case Study, Tina Marie Alford Williams

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This paper discusses the process of commodification by a non-profit hospice as seen through informants and participant observation. The objective was to describe how an all-volunteer organization could transform into a business when reimbursement was introduced into the exchange equation, why it happened, and the effects the change had on the people involved. What emerged from the interpretations was a detailed description of the commodification process in four areas: a) the emphasis of the money factor in the delivery of care, b) a shift to high-tech care and sicker patients, c) a calling and its relationship to non-profit work, and …

Library Instruction Vs. Information Competency: It's Not Just Bibliographic Instruction Anymore, Antoinette Paris Powell, Patricia S. Wilson

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

The Agriculture Library at the University of Kentucky has offered library instruction in some form for the past 23 years. The program began in 1974 with the Library Literacy program that offered on demand workshops, an undergraduate for-credit course, graduate workshops and programs to extension personnel. By 1988 the program had moved into a library literacy program that was proactive, provided individualized presentations, and provided a mix of electronic and paper sources. This program gave way to the information literacy program of 1994 which expanded target groups and collaborated with other areas. A shift in the teaching emphasis in the …

A Switch To Family Centered Practice, Rosemarie Michaelis Jan 1997

A Switch To Family Centered Practice, Rosemarie Michaelis

Honors Capstones

Research has been done to explore the development and advantages of family based practices. However, not enough research has been done to evaluate how to switch from a medically oriented approach to a more family based format in report writing. This study evaluates the importance of family oriented clinical early intervention reports (CARs) through comparison of the comprehension of non-professionals to speech and language evaluations. In this paper, the author will discuss the history of client - clinician relationships, importance of family oriented reports, and strategies for developing a family oriented CAR.

Information Technology In India, Sajid Anwar Mulla Jan 1997

Information Technology In India, Sajid Anwar Mulla

Honors Capstones

It was in my knowledge that India always possessed a large pool of technical talent within itself, which was comparable to world standards. A question that I always dwelled over was that, even though India was one of the giants in Software development, what were the underlying reasons for not implementing Software technology within it's own business settings? The engine behind the growth of the IT industry in India has been software exports. This industry has been growing at an annual rate of30% since 1988. There are no signs of abatement in that growth rate. There are an abundance of …

The Impact Of Enterprise-Wide Software On Organizational Performance, Ingrid D. Brandt Jan 1997

The Impact Of Enterprise-Wide Software On Organizational Performance, Ingrid D. Brandt

Honors Capstones

Enterprise-wide software solutions are one of the latest trends, especially in the U.S. Many U.S. firms that operate on a global scale need this kind of integrated solution in order to compete globally. The boom in the computer industry has spurred the creation of hundreds, if not thousands of firms -- each in different areas and niches to support the industry'S growth. There are dozens of firms specializing in the development of enterprise-wide software, and just as many if not more, consulting firms (including all of the big six accounting firms) specializing in the implementation of these solutions.

Measuring Risk-Based Capital, Karen Anderson '97 Jan 1997

Measuring Risk-Based Capital, Karen Anderson '97

Honors Projects

In order to assure policyholders that their benefits will be available when they are needed, the National Association ofInsurance Commissioners (NAIC) has begun regulating insurer capital through the Risk-Based Capital (RBC) Model Act for life insurance companies. The Model Act helps state insurance regulators plan to preserve and protect adequate insurance capital levels and maintain insurer solvency. The RBC requirements provide for a ratio which assesses the level of risk that is associated with an insurance company's assets. The purpose of the NAIC's RBC calculation is to develop the minimum amount of surplus needed given the risks assumed by the …

Perception Of Parental Conflict As A Predictor Of Attachment And Caregiving Styles In The Romantic Relationships Of Young Adults, Benjamin P. Chapman '97 Jan 1997

Perception Of Parental Conflict As A Predictor Of Attachment And Caregiving Styles In The Romantic Relationships Of Young Adults, Benjamin P. Chapman '97

Honors Projects

Attachment styles and caregiving styles have provided a useful framework for conceptualizing romantic relationships. The present study seeks to examine whether perceptions of high parental conflict will predict less secure attachment and caregiving styles in the romantic relationships of young adults. It is hypothesized that higher perceptions of parental conflict, as measured by the Family Structure Survey and the Conflict Tactics Scale, will correlate positively with more insecure ratings on a dimensional attachment measure, and will correlate positively with maladaptive extremes of caregiving styles, measured using the Caregiving Questionnaire. Low correlations between dimensional attachment and parental conflict were found. Results …

The Effects Of Information And Container Proximity On Paper Recycling, Todd Carlisle '97 Jan 1997

The Effects Of Information And Container Proximity On Paper Recycling, Todd Carlisle '97

Honors Projects

Contrary to popular belief, paper products are the one material that has actually increased (in percent of total waste) in U.S. landfills in the past 25 years (Rathje, Hughes, Archer, Wilson & Casselles, 1989). While paper recycling programs have become more commonplace today, their effectiveness has plateaued. To better understand how to increase a person's recycling behavior, this experiment, using a multiple baseline design, measured the effects of (1) information and (2) recycling container proximity on the paper recycling levels of 152 undergraduate students. The results of the experiment suggest that increasing a recycling container's proximity and educating a person …

Tactile Defensiveness And Patterns Of Social Behavior In Autism, Cari D. Neal '97 Jan 1997

Tactile Defensiveness And Patterns Of Social Behavior In Autism, Cari D. Neal '97

Honors Projects

The expression of tactile defensiveness (Tn) varies among individuals; however, it appears to affect a great number of people with autism. Nevertheless, little research has been conducted to evaluate TD in autism. Past literature regarding touch and typical social development suggests that a relationship between tactile stimulation, or in this case the aversion to this stimuli, and social behavior may exist. Utilizing survey data, it was found that Tn was significantly related to the severity of characteristics of autism as well as to social subscales. In addition, significant differences in cognitive functioning among social subgroups (aloof, passive, active but odd, …

The Roles Of Age And Frontal Lobe Damage In Prospective Memory, Sara J. Russell '97 Jan 1997

The Roles Of Age And Frontal Lobe Damage In Prospective Memory, Sara J. Russell '97

Honors Projects

Recent evidence suggests that the frontal lobe plays an intimate role in the meditation of prospective memory (Shallice & Burgess, 1991; Cockburn, 1995). However, there is a paucity of studies linking damage to the frontal lobe to reduced efficacy of prospective memory. The present study attempts to examine three types of participants who differ in frontal lobe functioning and their relative levels of successful prospective memory. The participants consist of younger adults, older adults (55 and over) and individuals with frontal lobe damage determined by a CAT scan or MRI. All three groups will be given a computer-based general knowledge …

Synthesis Of An Organophosphorus Analog Of Acetylcholine, Darshan Mehta '97 Jan 1997

Synthesis Of An Organophosphorus Analog Of Acetylcholine, Darshan Mehta '97

Honors Projects

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is an important enzyme in our nervous system In normal nerve function, AChE catalyzes the hydrolysis of acetylcholine (ACh) into its respective components, choline and acetate. Recent interest has been focused on AChE because of its potential role in the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Studies have revealed that the active site of AChE contains an esteratic and several hydrophobic/anionic subsites. AChE is inhibited by organophosphorus (OP) compounds like sarin and soman. As a result, OP compounds have been used to study the structure of AChE and the mechanism by which it catalyzes the hydrolysis …

Comparison Of Three Different Interviewing Techniques For Young Children, David Samsock Jan 1997

Comparison Of Three Different Interviewing Techniques For Young Children, David Samsock

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Three programs for the testing of elementary school students' eyewitness testimonies were compared; Action for Child Protection Inc., (1994) which utilizes doll play, the Step-Wise Interview procedure developed by Yuille et al. (1993), and a modified version of the Cognitive Interview, (Geiselman, Saywitz and Bornstein, 1993). College students were trained in one of the three interviewing techniques. First and second grade children viewed a short film, were given suggestions, and were then interviewed with one of the three interviewing techniques. The college students had not seen the film. The techniques produced different response patterns, and strengths and weaknesses of each …
