Demonstrating Social Accountability In Medical Education, Brian Hennen Jan 1997

Demonstrating Social Accountability In Medical Education, Brian Hennen

Higher Education

The author considers the University of Toronto's Health, Illness and the Community course for undergraduate medical students, described in this issue by Wasylenki and associates (see pages 379 to 383). Social accountability in medical education demands a community orientation and hence an emphasis on outreach. Medical schools should expand their clinical service to the community, provide community-based residency placements and offer continuing medical education in rural and regional centres. Accountability also requires community involvement in planning and implementing research projects. Placing students in a community setting as part of the curriculum is praiseworthy, but it is not sufficient to ensure …

Shared Consequences: Recent Experiences With Outreach And Community-Based Learning, Judith A. Ramaley Jan 1997

Shared Consequences: Recent Experiences With Outreach And Community-Based Learning, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education

Recently, William M. Sullivan asked "whether [higher education] has the ability and the will to respond through leadership, institutional design, teaching, and research, in creating a new form of intellectual life for the public good" (Sullivan 1996). A call has been issued for our nation's research universities to embrace public engagement (Kellogg Commission on the Future of State and Land-Grant Universities 1996), and to acknowledge that "higher education should be about values - the values of informed citizenship, the values expressed in a sense of responsibility ... "(Atwell 1996).

Educating A Committe Citizenry, Faith Gabelnick

Higher Education

If we want our students to acquire the democratic virtues of honesty, tolerance. empathy. generosity. teamwork, and social responsibility, we have to demonstrate those qualities not only in our individual professional conduct but also in our institutional policies," writes Alexander Astin in "What Higher Education Can Do in the Cause of Citizenship"' (Chronicle of Higher Education, October 6, 1995).

Virtual Judgment Proofing: A Rejoinder, Lynn M. Lopucki Jan 1997

Virtual Judgment Proofing: A Rejoinder, Lynn M. Lopucki

UF Law Faculty Publications

This is a rejoinder by the author of The Death of Liability, 106 Yale L.J. 1 (1996). The rejoinder is to a reply by Professor James J. White to the original article. Corporate Judgment Proofing: A Response to Lynn LoPucki's The Death of Liability, 107 Yale L.J. 1363 (1998). In response to specific points made by White, LoPucki argues that the judgment proofing of large companies would not be visible in Compustat data because it is not accomplished through secured debt or leasing and because Compustat data is aggregated by corporate group. Contracting parties will permit debtors to judgment proof …

Who’S Afraid Of Humpty Dumpty: Deconstructionist References In Judicial Opinions, Madeleine M. Plasencia Jan 1997

Who’S Afraid Of Humpty Dumpty: Deconstructionist References In Judicial Opinions, Madeleine M. Plasencia

Articles

This Article examines the treatment of deconstruction in United States judicial opinions.' A handful of cases have directly referred to the French philosopher and literary theorist, Jacques Derrida.2 In each of these cases, the court has rejected Derrida's philosophy, apparently out of a fear that recognition of any legitimacy of Derrida's thoughts would lead to the self-destruction of the legal world. These courts have misunderstood that consideration or recognition of Derrida's philosophy in the legal context would not unavoidably lead to the end of all meaningful legal discourse in the United States. A discussion of these cases will serve as …

An Educational Tool For Spinal Manual Therapy, Jennifer Brandt Jan 1997

An Educational Tool For Spinal Manual Therapy, Jennifer Brandt

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Spinal manual therapy is a broad term used in physical therapy. Its applications include evaluation, pain relief, relaxation, and restoration of normal joint motion. Unfortunately, there is a lack of scientific research supporting the therapeutic effects of spinal manual therapy. Despite its questionable effectiveness, spinal manual therapy has become a widely used and integral practice for physical therapists. To a physical therapist, spinal manual therapy can include a vast array of procedures including: soft tissue mobilization, passive muscle stretching, muscle energy techniques, and joint manipulation. The purpose of this project is to provide the student with a brief summary on …

Video Education And Mechanical Traction, Tiffany A. Orth Jan 1997

Video Education And Mechanical Traction, Tiffany A. Orth

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

I began this endeavor with several goals to accomplish. The main goal is to provide an educational video that may be used as a supplementary tool to PT 319: Techniques ll. Theory and Technique of Thermo-Photo-Hydrotherapy. This video will demonstrate mechanical lumbar traction in the supine and prone positions as well as cervical traction in the seated and supine positions. The use of video in education enhances the transfer of information from instructor to student by providing consistent information, repetition, easy use, and realism. Included with the video is a study guide that contains detailed listings of traction information that …

Salvaging The Communications Decency Act In The Wake Of Aclu V. Reno And Shea V. Reno, Rebecca J. Dessoffy

Cleveland State Law Review

Hundreds of Worldwide Web site providers blackened their pages for forty-eight hours to protest the enactment of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 ("CDA"). The CDA regulates the transmission of sexually explicit material, both obscene and indecent, over the Internet. The CDA protesters claimed the law, designed to protect children, impermissibly infringes on adults' First Amendment rights to send and receive sexually explicit material. This note begins by exploring the challenged provisions of the CDA and the positions of those parties who opposed the CDA in the federal district court declaratory judgment actions. Next, the note examines applicable case precedent …

Televised Gender Roles In Children’S Media: Covert Messages, Gaye Leigh Green Jan 1997

Televised Gender Roles In Children’S Media: Covert Messages, Gaye Leigh Green

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Encountering stereotypes promulgated by media representations is a daily occurrence. Information perpetuated in the media continually influences how people view the world. Female gender roles portrayed in television, for example, have altered from the 1950s stay-at-home mother portrayed by Barbara Billingsley in Leave It To Beaver, to postmodern portrayals of independent actress/mothers such as Jane Seymour. The messages that such diverse personifications suggest of motherhood are equally disparate. While television once perpetuated images of mothers as in the home caregivers, this domestic characterization has evolved into moms who now venture actively into the world.

Living The Discourses, Ed Check, Grace Deniston, Dipti Desai Jan 1997

Living The Discourses, Ed Check, Grace Deniston, Dipti Desai

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Factors of social class, race, gender, and sexuality are important to any understanding of the social processes of art. Often, art educators discuss these factors in abstract terms, thereby confining discussion in art education to a set of identifiable variables constructed as static, universal, and homogeneous. The particularities of living and working in educational spaces structured along racist, classist, sexist, and homophobic lines remain largely unexplored. Recent scholarship in art education has begun to examine the particularities of these social relations (Garber, 1995; Stuhr, Krug, & Scott, 1995). But the fractures, dangers, and the erasures are not being articulated in …

A Mountain Cultural Curriculum: Telling Our Story, Christine Bellengee Morris Jan 1997

A Mountain Cultural Curriculum: Telling Our Story, Christine Bellengee Morris

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Jim Wayne Miller, professor of English at Western Kentucky University, declared that school children in West Virginia have more exposure to other cultures than they do to their own. His concern was that, “Lack of knowledge about the area’s history helps perpetuate negative stereotypes about the region’s mountain people” (Associated Press, 1994). If the Mountain Culture, to which many of the students belong, is not reflected in the curriculum, their identity, voice, heritage, history, and arts are censored and the Mountain Cultural youth are rendered invisible in their own state. Results from a survey of three elementary schools located in …

A Descriptive Study Of Motivation Factors Leading To The Selection Of A School-To-Career Transition Curriculum By High School Students In Arkansas, Virginia Stevenson Anderson Jan 1997

A Descriptive Study Of Motivation Factors Leading To The Selection Of A School-To-Career Transition Curriculum By High School Students In Arkansas, Virginia Stevenson Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of the study was to identify elements that encourage high school students to select the school-to-career curriculum. The study included elements from successful school-to-career programs, background of the history of vocational legislation, and an examination of motivation theories including goal-setting, needs satisfaction, and choice. A survey was administered to 175 students in four districts in Arkansas. Students were given open- and closed-response questions to determine their present interest in the school-to-career curricula and elements they considered motivational. A univariate analysis was conducted. Responses were placed in a frequency distribution. The responses from the surveys indicated enrollment would increase …

Cyclic Permutations In Doubly-Transitive Groups, John P. Mcsorley Jan 1997

Cyclic Permutations In Doubly-Transitive Groups, John P. Mcsorley

Articles and Preprints

Let Ω be a finite set of size n. A cyclic permutation on Ω is a permutation whose cycle decomposition is one cycle of length n. This paper classifies all finite doubly-transitive permutation groups which contain a cyclic permutation. The classification appears in Table 1.

We use (G, Ω) for a finite doubly-transitive permutation group G acting on a finite set Ω. For other notation and definitions see the self-contained article Cameron [1].

Analyzing The Emergence Of A Learning Issue In A Problem-Based Learning Meeting, Timothy Koschmann, Phillip Glenn, Melinda Conlee Jan 1997

Analyzing The Emergence Of A Learning Issue In A Problem-Based Learning Meeting, Timothy Koschmann, Phillip Glenn, Melinda Conlee

Publications

Though much has been published concerning the intended or realized benefits of participating in a Problem-Based curriculum, we know little about what participants (faculty and students) actually do when they say they are doing Problem-Based Learning (PBL). The current paper is part of an ongoing to effort to apply methods borrowed from studies of discourse to understanding PBL as a form of enacted practice. In particular, the paper provides a description of the interaction within a PBL tutorial meeting leading to the generation of a Learning Issue (LI). We introduce the term Knowledge Assessment Segment (KAS) for important stretches of …

Distributed Detection With Multiple Sensors: Part I—Fundamentals, Ramanarayanan Viswanathan, Pramod K. Varshney Jan 1997

Distributed Detection With Multiple Sensors: Part I—Fundamentals, Ramanarayanan Viswanathan, Pramod K. Varshney

Articles

In this paper, basic results on distributed detection are reviewed. In particular, we consider the parallel and the serial architectures in some detail and discuss the decision rules obtained from their optimization based on the Neyman–Pearson (NP) criterion and the Bayes formulation. For conditionally independent sensor observations, the optimality of the likelihood ratio test (LRT) at the sensors is established. General comments on several important issues are made including the computational complexity of obtaining the optimal solutions, the design of detection networks with more general topologies, and applications to different areas.

The Police, Pretextual Investigatory Activity, And The Fourth Amendment: What Hath Whren Wrought, Mark M. Dobson Jan 1997

The Police, Pretextual Investigatory Activity, And The Fourth Amendment: What Hath Whren Wrought, Mark M. Dobson

St. Thomas Law Review

Part II of this article briefly discusses the debate over what was considered pretextual activity in the time before Whren. Part III then analyzes both the facts and resolution of the pretext issue presented in Whren itself. Part IV explores what Wiren means for the future, both in terms of how this decision, when coupled with existing Fourth Amendment precedent enlarges what the police can do; and how two other Fourth Amendment cases which have recently been handed down, may even further expand what the police can do.
