The Radioresistance Of Deinococcus Radiodurans., Valerie Mattimore Jan 1997

The Radioresistance Of Deinococcus Radiodurans., Valerie Mattimore

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Deinococcus radiodurans is a remarkably ionizing radiation resistant bacterium. As a vegetative cell it is capable of withstanding 5,000 Gy ionizing radiation without evidence of death or mutation. D. radiodurans survives irradiation by repairing DNA damage via an extremely efficient DNA repair system. However, this DNA repair system has not been completely defined. In addition, the selective process allowing the evolution of high level radioresistance has remained a question. This dissertation bolsters the understanding of the DNA repair system of D. radiodurans by characterizing a collection of ionizing radiation sensitive (IRS) mutants. The level of radioresistance is quantified and transformation …

Investigation Of Transactivation Of The Human C-Myc Gene By Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, Xian Wu Jan 1997

Investigation Of Transactivation Of The Human C-Myc Gene By Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, Xian Wu

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to identify the regulatory elements involved in the transactivation of the human c-myc gene by herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1). This study mainly focused on a major c-myc promoter P2 (Fig. 1). Transient expression assays were carried out with a reporter plasmid, that contained either a wild type (+66wt c-myc) or mutant (+66 mt E2F, +66mt CT -I2) c-myc promoter fused to the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) gene, cotransfected with effector plasmids that contained the HSV-1 immediate early (IE) genes ( encoding IE proteins, ICP4, ICP0, ICP27). The transient expression assays revealed …

Protecting And Promoting Wildlife And Habitat On State And Private Land In Washington's Arid Interior, Gregory A. Hicks Jan 1997

Protecting And Promoting Wildlife And Habitat On State And Private Land In Washington's Arid Interior, Gregory A. Hicks

Articles

The object of this paper is to describe efforts now under way in the interior uplands of Washington State's Columbia Plain to restore and protect upland wildlife habitat and wildlife species in a busy and intensively used agricultural and range landscape. It is a landscape of greatly diminished ecological integrity, dominated by private land holdings, and where the remaining public lands are recovering from earlier periods of farming or grazing or still dedicated to productive use under lease or permit. Recent ecosystem assessments make clear that there are few areas of the Columbia Plain's original grass and shrub land which …

The Potentiation Of Actions By Visual Objects, Michael Richard Edwin Tucker Jan 1997

The Potentiation Of Actions By Visual Objects, Michael Richard Edwin Tucker

School of Psychology Theses

This thesis examines the relation between visual objects and the actions they afford. It is proposed that viewing an object results in the potentiation of the actions that can be made towards it. The proposal is consistent with neurophysiological evidence that suggests that no clear divide exists between visual and motor representation in the dorsal visual pathway, a processing stream that neuropsychological evidence strongly implicates in the visual control of actions. The experimental work presented examines motor system involvement in visual representation when no intention to perform a particular action is present. It is argued that the representation of action-relevant …

A Landowner's Guide To Common North American Predators Of Upland Nesting Birds, T. A. Messmer, Michael R. Conover, Raymond Dueser, P. W. Klimack

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

This publication provides information designed to increase the reader’s basic understanding of predator/prey interactions and the biology and ecology of common North American predators of upland-nesting birds, their nests, and young. We also discuss the potential impacts of these predators on upland-nesting bird populations. By understanding the biology and ecology of predators, the reader will be better prepared to make informed management decisions about how to enhance local upland-nesting bird populations. Information regarding specific techniques that can be used to manage common predators of upland-nesting birds, can be found in an accompanying publication entitled, “A Landowner’s Guide to Managing …

Latino Electoral And Nonelectoral Political Participation: Findings From The 1996 Chicago Latino Registered Voter Survey, Peter M. Sanchez, Maria Vidal De Haymes

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Latino population in the United States has been expanding at a tremendous rate in recent decades and as the number of Latinos in the United States grows, so does their potential for influencing American politics grow. Yet, we have a very limited understanding of Latino civic engagement, political behavior, and public policy opinions. This article presents the results of a survey of 408 registered Latino voters in Chicago, Illinois. The findings advance a multidimensional understanding of Latino political behaviors and attitudes through the examination of multiple measures of political participation and opinions concerning political parties and public issues such …

The Development Of On-Line Microwave Digestion Techniques For Environmental Matrices, Kathryn Judith Lamble Jan 1997

The Development Of On-Line Microwave Digestion Techniques For Environmental Matrices, Kathryn Judith Lamble

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

As a consequence of our advancing knowledge of the impact of trace elements in environmental and biological systems there is increasing need for quantitative analytical techniques to accurately, sensitively and rapidly determine a wide range of trace elements in environmental samples. Since their emergence in 1975 microwave digestion techniques have revolutionised conventional approaches to sample digestion and have rapidly gained widespread acceptance as an effective method of sample preparation. This thesis describes how a number of novel on-line microwave digestion techniques have been developed, characterised and applied to the digestion of a range of environmental matrices which have proved time …
