Insect Resistant Rice, Maize And Wheat Cultivars In Sustainable Agriculture, E. A. Heinrichs, J. E. Foster
Insect Resistant Rice, Maize And Wheat Cultivars In Sustainable Agriculture, E. A. Heinrichs, J. E. Foster
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The achievement of self sufficiency in food production is a major objective of governments throughout the world. Insects are one of the major constraints that limit the production of food crops. To mitigate losses due to insects. insect resistant cultivars are sought as a major tactic in the development of integrated pest management strategies. The integration of insect resistant cultivars with other pest management tactics contributes to crop pest management strategies that are environmentally and economically acceptable. Multiple pest resistant crop cultivars have high yield stability when grown in pest-infested environments. Significant progress on a global basis has been achieved …

Growing Degree-Days: One Equation, Two Interpretations, Gregory S. Mcmaster, Wallace Wilhelm
Growing Degree-Days: One Equation, Two Interpretations, Gregory S. Mcmaster, Wallace Wilhelm
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Heat units, expressed in growing degree-days (GDD), are frequently used to describe the timing of biological processes. The basic equation used is GDD = [(TMAX + TMIN)/2] - TBASE where TMAX and TMIN are daily maximum and minimum air temperature, respectively, and TBASE is the base temperature. Two methods of interpreting this equation for calculating GDD are: (1) if the daily mean temperature is less than the base, it is set equal to the base temperature, or (2) if TMAX or TMIN < TBASE they are reset equal to T …
Physiology And Ecology Of Dispersal Polymorphism In Insects, Anthony J. Zera, Robert F. Denno
Physiology And Ecology Of Dispersal Polymorphism In Insects, Anthony J. Zera, Robert F. Denno
Anthony Zera Publications
Studies of dispersal polymorphism in insects have played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of population dynamics, life history evolution, and the physiological basis of adaptation. Comparative data on wing-dimorphic insects provide the most definitive evidence to date that habitat persistence selects for reduced dispersal capability. The increased fecundity of flightless females documents that a fitness tradeoff exists between flight capability and reproduction. However, only recently have studies of nutrient consumption and allocation provided unequivocal evidence that this fitness trade-off results from a trade-off of internal resources. Recent studies involving wing-dimorphic insects document that flight capability imposes reproductive penalties …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of prolonged bed rest (BR) on the peak isometric force (Po) and unloaded shortening velocity (Vo) of single Ca2+-activated muscle fibers. Soleus muscle biopsies were obtained from eight adult males before and after 17 days of 6° head-down BR. Chemically permeabilized single fiber segments were mounted between a force transducer and position motor, activated with saturating levels of Ca2+, and subjected to slack length steps. Vo was determined by plotting the time for force redevelopment vs. the slack step distance. …

State Of The Fisheries Report 1996/1997, Jim W. Penn
Status Reports of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
The State of the Fisheries document is designed as an essential supplement to the Annual Report to Parliament. By summarising data such as landings, ettort, catch rates, stock assessment and breeding stock levels, this document provides a valuable reference point for all Western Australian fisheries of major importance to the commercial, recreational and aquaculture sectors. Information relevant to the Department of Fisheries' Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program is also provided. The report indicates that overall the major fish stocks which support fisheries in Western Australia continue to be in a reasonably healthy condition. Those species which are being harvested …

From Premodern To Modern American Jurisprudence: The Onset Of Positivism, Stephen M. Feldman
From Premodern To Modern American Jurisprudence: The Onset Of Positivism, Stephen M. Feldman
Vanderbilt Law Review
What distinguished premodern from modern American jurisprudence? Whereas most commentators agree that the transition from premodernism to modernism occurred around the Civil War,' recent writings reveal dissension regarding the nature of antebellum and postbellum jurisprudence. In a wonderfully detailed study of Christopher Columbus Langdell, his jurisprudence, and his case method of teaching, William P. LaPiana argues that a defining feature of Langdell's postbellum legal science was a positivism that contrasted with a natural law orientation characteristic of the earlier antebellum jurisprudence. In a provocative critical essay, Robert W. Gordon argues to the contrary: LaPiana's emphasis on natural law during the …

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Brains from 41 aged canines (≥10 years of age) were examined immunohistochemically to characterize the laminar distribution and age-related progression of β-amyloid (Aβ) in frontal cortex. We classified the Aβ patterns into four distinct types. Type I was characterized by small, faint deposits of Aβ in deep cortical layers. Type II consisted of diffuse deposits of Aβ mainly in layers V and VI. Type III had both dense plaques in superficial layers, and diffuse deposits in deep layers. Finally, Type IV had solely dense plaques throughout all layers of cortex. We compared the A …
An Integrated Environment For Problem Solving And Program Development, Fadi Pierre Deek
An Integrated Environment For Problem Solving And Program Development, Fadi Pierre Deek
Dissertations
A framework for an integrated problem solving and program development environment that addresses the needs of students learning programming is proposed. Several objectives have been accomplished: defining the tasks required for program development and a literature review to determine the actual difficulties involved in learning those tasks. A comprehensive Study of environments and tools developed to support the learning of problem solving and programming was then performed, covering programming environments, debugging aids, intelligent tutoring systems, and intelligent programming environments. This was followed by a careful analysis and critique of these systems, which uncovered the limitations that have prevented them from …
Holocene Vegetation And Historic Grazing Impacts At Capitol Reef National Park Reconstructed Using Packrat Middens, Kenneth L. Cole, Norman Henderson, David S. Shafer
Holocene Vegetation And Historic Grazing Impacts At Capitol Reef National Park Reconstructed Using Packrat Middens, Kenneth L. Cole, Norman Henderson, David S. Shafer
Great Basin Naturalist
Mid- to late-Holocene vegetation change from a remote high-desert site was reconstructed using plant macrofossils and pollen from 9 packrat middens ranging from 0 to 5400 yr in age. Presettlement middens consistently contained abundant macrofossils of plant species palatable to large herbivores that are now absent or reduced, such as winterfat (Ceratoides lanata) and ricegrass (Stipa hymenoides). Macrofossils and pollen of pinyon pine (Pinus edulis), sagebrush (Artemisia spp.), and roundleaf buffaloberry (Shepherdia rotundifolia) were recently reduced to their lowest levels for the 5400-yr record. Conversely, species typical of overgrazed range, such …

Homing In Eastern Fence Lizards (Sceloporus Undulatus) Following Short-Distance Translocation, Eric W. Hein, Shayna J. Whitaker
Great Basin Naturalist
We conducted an experiment on eastern fence lizards (Sceloporus undulatus) during August–September 1995 near Los Alamos, New Mexico, (1) to ascertain if lizards that were relocated short distances exhibited homing, (2) to investigate a possible barrier to movement, and (3) to determine the effect of translocating individuals from a transplant area on lizards in a recipient area. We relocated 15 of an estimated population of 39 (95% CI 36–45) lizards an average distance of 46 m. Fourteen of 15 translocated lizards returned to within 6.81 (sx̄ = 1.43) m of the original capture location. Movement distances …
