Productivity And Market Integration In American Communal Dairying, 1830-1875, John E. Murray, Metin M. Cosgel Nov 1997

Productivity And Market Integration In American Communal Dairying, 1830-1875, John E. Murray, Metin M. Cosgel

Economics Working Papers

In our late twentieth century experience, survival of an economy seems critically dependent on well established rights to private property and a return to labor that rewards greater effort. But that need not be so. History provides examples of micro-socialist economies that internally, at least, allow for little private property for participants and a constant return to labor that is independent of effort. Some such economies may even be termed 'successful,' if success is taken to mean survival over several generations. If these communities survived without conditions that are generally thought to be necessary for success, a question worth asking …

Regional Specialization In Communal Agriculture: The Shakers, 1850- 1880, John E. Murray, Metin M. Cosgel Nov 1997

Regional Specialization In Communal Agriculture: The Shakers, 1850- 1880, John E. Murray, Metin M. Cosgel

Economics Working Papers

When the Shakers established communal farms in the Ohio Valley, they encountered a new agricultural environment that was substantially different from the familiar soils, climates, and markets of New England and the Hudson Valley. The ways in which their response to these new conditions differed by region has not been well documented. We examine patterns of specialization among the Shakers using the manuscript schedules of the federal Agricultural Censuses from 1850 through 1880. For each Shaker unit, we also recorded a random sample of five farms in the same township (or all available farms if there were fewer than five). …

Productivity Of A Commune: The Shakers, 1850-80, Metin M. Cosgel, John E. Murray

Economics Working Papers

How does the productivity of a commune compare with that of a conventional firm? This paper addresses this question quantitatively by focusing on the history of a religious commune called the United Society of Believers, better known as the Shakers. We utilize the information recorded in the enumeration schedules of the US Manufacturing and Agriculture Censuses, available for the period between 1850 to 1880, to estimate the productivities of Shaker shops and farms. From the same data source, we also construct random samples of other shops and farms and estimate their productivities for comparison with the Shakers. Our results provide …

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet: Annual Assessment Of Customer Needs And Satisfaction: Mail Survey, Patsy Anderson, Kris Hockensmith

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, both through its own quality initiative and a statewide "Empower Kentucky" campaign, has a commitment to achieve new levels of quality in the development, construction and maintenance of highways. In order to gage progress, there is a need to establish a baseline of customer satisfaction with the current highway system, and determine needs as, perceived by the users of the highway system. As a result, the University of Kentucky Transportation Center, Technology Exchange Unit, was contracted to conduct a customer needs and satisfaction survey. The objectives of this study are to:

A. Ascertain Kentucky highway users' …

The Illiberalism Of Liberalism: Religious Discourse In The Public Square, Douglas G. Smith Nov 1997

The Illiberalism Of Liberalism: Religious Discourse In The Public Square, Douglas G. Smith

San Diego Law Review

The author argues that religious beliefs are appropriate grounds for public justification and choice. This view has been attacked by various liberal theorists, including John Rawls, for subjecting individuals in society to coercive government action based on premises to which they cannot reasonably assent. John Rawl’s Political Liberalism is analyzed as an instance of liberal theorists unnecessarily excluding a religious perspective from “liberal” public discourse. Professor Smith presents a new model of public discourse which, offering a moral and epistemological basis for including religious and other theories in public debate and choice.

Expression Of Protein Kinase C Beta In The Heart Causes Hypertrophy In Adult Mice And Sudden Death In Neonates, Joel C. Bowman, Susan F. Steinberg, Tiangrong Jiang, David L. Geenen, Glenn I. Fishman, Peter M. Buttrick Nov 1997

Expression Of Protein Kinase C Beta In The Heart Causes Hypertrophy In Adult Mice And Sudden Death In Neonates, Joel C. Bowman, Susan F. Steinberg, Tiangrong Jiang, David L. Geenen, Glenn I. Fishman, Peter M. Buttrick

Peer Reviewed Articles

Protein kinase C (PKC) activation in the heart has been linked to a hypertrophic phenotype and to processes that influence contractile function. To establish whether PKC activation is sufficient to induce an abnormal phenotype, PKCbeta was conditionally expressed in cardiomyocytes of transgenic mice. Transgene expression in adults caused mild and progressive ventricular hypertrophy associated with impaired diastolic relaxation, whereas expression in newborns caused sudden death associated with marked abnormalities in the regulation of intracellular calcium. Thus, the PKC signaling pathway in cardiocytes has different effects depending on the timing of expression and, in the adult, is sufficient to induce pathologic …

School-To-Work And Service-Learning, Madeleine S. Hengel, Robert D. Shumer Nov 1997

School-To-Work And Service-Learning, Madeleine S. Hengel, Robert D. Shumer

Bibliographies

This document has been prepared as a brief review of resources and readings on Service-Learning and School-to-Work. The series, "Links, Connecting Theory With Practice," is being developed to give practitioners and researchers who contact the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse (NSLC) a point of reference in beginning to look at topics and current issues in service-learning.

Service-Learning (SL) and School-to-Work (STW) both extend learning beyond the classroom into real world contexts where broader problem-solving and decision-making skills are addressed. While service-learning provides opportunities for students to participate in learning activities within their community that utilize their academic and vocational competencies, School-to-Work helps …

Modulation Of The Rat Potassium Channel Kv1.5, Daniel Benjamin Saal Nov 1997

Modulation Of The Rat Potassium Channel Kv1.5, Daniel Benjamin Saal

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

1. Kv1.5 is a delayed rectifier-type potassium channel. We have examined the localization of the channel protein using a polyclonal antibody against Kv1.5. This channel is expressed in numerous regions of the brain, primarily in glial cells. Its expression is particularly intense in the endfoot processes which abut the microvasculature of the brain. It is also expressed in the cell bodies and cellular processes in the pituitary.2. Immunoprecipitation of the Kv1.5 protein, from HEK 293 cells which were transformed with the Kv1.5 gene, revealed that the channel is phosphorylated and that treatment of cells with dibutyryl cyclic AMP (dibcAMP) or …

Values, Affect And Risk Perception, Kurt Neuwirth, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert J. Griffin Nov 1997

Values, Affect And Risk Perception, Kurt Neuwirth, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert J. Griffin

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Three pilot studies provided data exploring the roles of values, threats to these selfsame values and emotions in the perception of risk. Results indicate that judgements about risk are associated with a wide variety of values and perceived threats to values. The findings also revealed that the negative emotions such as sadness, worry, anger, disgust, helplessness and uncertainty were significantly related to risk perception. The authors' discussion advances the view that the range of topics considered appropriate to risk communication can be extended to the area of public opinion and rhetorical studies.
