Interview: Cindi Katz. Creating Safe Space And The Materiality Of The Margins, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

Cindi Katz, associate professor and chair of the environmental psychology program at the Graduate School of the City University of New York, visited the University of Kentucky in February of 1996 to deliver the keynote address at the 5 1/2 Annual Geography Graduate Student Conference. In her address, entitled "Power, Space and Terror: Social Reproduction and the Public Environment," Professor Katz discussed how changes jn urban built environments, particularly the privatization of urban public space, negatively affected New York City children. Privatization, she argued, not only serves a 'child hating' mentality prevalent in our society, but fosters, among other things, …

Issues And Conflicts In The Management Of The Public Domain Of The Saddle Mountains In Eastern Washington: A Case Study, James Jack Sharpe Jan 1997

Issues And Conflicts In The Management Of The Public Domain Of The Saddle Mountains In Eastern Washington: A Case Study, James Jack Sharpe

All Master's Theses

This thesis examines the prehistoric, historic, and contemporary patterns of land use and their effects in the Saddle Mountains of eastern Washington. Federal laws and Indian treaties require that federal lands be managed to preserve natural and cultural resources while meeting the demands of private interests for economic development and of the general public for recreational access. Land management conflicts created by these diverse interests are reviewed in the context of the history of the study area, the legal framework that directs its management, and the management process as it actually works. It concludes with recommendations to resolve land use …

The Role Of Riparian Water Law In Protecting Biodiversity: An Indiana (Usa) Case Study, Robert L. Fischman

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This article discusses how the rules affecting the use of surface water ground water in a typical riparian state, Indiana, can promote the conservation biological diversity. The article first surveys the basic water laws that apply to surface water, diffused surface water, underground streams, and ground water. The rules governing the uses of these waters originate in common law property doctrines and substantially clarified by state legislation. Next the article considers state administration of water. The article examines regulatory tools and administrative opportunities control uses of water in a manner that protects biodiversity. Programs requiring permits for construction in floodplains, …

Protecting Baywatch And Wagamama: Why The European Union Should Revise The 1989 Trademark Directive To Mandate Dilution Protection For Trademarks, William T. Vuk

Fordham International Law Journal

This Note argues that the European Union must harmonize the protection afforded trademarks against dilution, and that the European Union should adopt legislation similar to the U.S. Federal Trademark Dilution Act of 1995. Part I discusses pertinent aspects of US and EU trademark law. Part I also describes the dilution doctrine and reviews the US and EU approaches to dilution. Part II presents the debate on whether to provide trademarks protection from dilution. Part III argues that the European Union should adopt a dilution statute similar to the Lanham Act's dilution provision because dilution protection is necessary to fully protect …

Molecular Mechanisms Involved In The Expression And Regulation Of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase By Dietary Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids., Deborah Lynne Hodge Jan 1997

Molecular Mechanisms Involved In The Expression And Regulation Of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase By Dietary Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids., Deborah Lynne Hodge

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of this work was to determine how polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) affect gene expression at the molecular level. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is a member of the family of lipogenic enzymes known to be inhibited by dietary PUFAs. Addition of PUFAs to diet causes a 70-80% decrease in G6PD enzyme activity and mRNA accumulation in liver with no change in transcriptional activity of the gene, indicating that regulation occurs at a posttranscriptional step. Similarly, regulation of G6PD by starvation and refeeding results in a 12- to 15-fold increase in G6PD activity and mRNA accumulation but no change in transcriptional …

Retrovirus Variation And Rt Template Switching During Retroviral Reverse Transcription: Development Of Novel Retroviral Vectors For Gene Therapy., John George Julias Jan 1997

Retrovirus Variation And Rt Template Switching During Retroviral Reverse Transcription: Development Of Novel Retroviral Vectors For Gene Therapy., John George Julias

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The low processivity of retroviral reverse transcriptase and the lack of exonucleolytic proofreading by retroviral reverse trascriptase contribute to the emergence of virus variants in infected hosts. A result of the low processivity of reverse transcriptase is the high frequency deletion of direct repeats in retroviral genomes and vectors. We determined that direct repeats of 383, 788, and 1333 base pairs delete at rates of 28-40, 85, and 93%, respectively, in one round of retroviral replication. Also, we demonstrated that the propensity of reverse transcriptase to switch templates could be used to reconstitute the neomycin resistance gene and delete the …

Imminency And Restorationism In Early Christianity, Timothy E. Crosby Jan 1997

Imminency And Restorationism In Early Christianity, Timothy E. Crosby

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The problem of the delay of the Parousia is one of the central problems of the Christian faith. In the Seventh-day Adventist Church it usually takes the form of a short delay (100+ years), whereas among New Testament scholars it takes the form of a long delay (1900+ years). This study seeks to shed light on the problem as perceived by New Testament scholars.

Method

In order to delve deeply into the meaning of a handful of cruxes in the New Testament having to do with the imminence of the Parousia, the study attempted to examine all of the …

Barriers In Traditional Ashanti Religion To Membership In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Amofah-Anane Asamoah

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The persistence of traditional belief and practice among about 30 percent of Ashanti traditionalists presents a great challenge to the Ashanti SDA Church on how to engage the traditionalists' with the gospel. The darker side of the Ashanti world is characterized by fear and insecurity. While Christianity presents an attractive doctrine of salvation in a transcendent sense, its emissaries have failed to provide satisfying ways of dealing with the forces of the spirit world. In addition, the Ashanti institution of chieftaincy involves closely connected socio-political and religious rites. The chief is both the central officiant in rituals of tendence …

Understanding And Dealing With Ancestral Practices In Botswana, Stanley P. Chikwekwe Jan 1997

Understanding And Dealing With Ancestral Practices In Botswana, Stanley P. Chikwekwe

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Ancestral and other traditional practices continue to trouble the Seventh-day Adventist Church in several parts of the world. It is not uncommon for believers to seek ancestors' mediation whenever they are faced with problems. Most church members deny that ancestral and other traditional practices exist within the church, whereas others do not want to discuss the issue o f traditional practices because of fear of being labeled superstitious. The denial is due to the way the church has handled ancestral practices in the past. Because most members do not know what to do when problems come, they revert to …

Effect Of Hydrous Oxide Coatings On Adsorption Of Oxyanions By Clay Minerals., Swarn S. Dhaliwal Jan 1997

Effect Of Hydrous Oxide Coatings On Adsorption Of Oxyanions By Clay Minerals., Swarn S. Dhaliwal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Five clay minerals (Well Crystallized Kaolinite (KWC), Poorly Crystallized Kaolinite (KPC), Illite, Attapulgite, and Montmorillonite) with a range of surface characteristics were selected to investigate the adsorption of three oxyanions (molybdate, selenite, and selenate). The minerals were coated with five different levels of each of Fe and Al hydrous oxides. The charge characteristics were determined using potentiometric titration. Adsorption was studied by batch experiment at 11 different concentrations of each of the oxyanions at three different pH levels. Coating with both Fe as well as Al hydrous oxide coatings raised the pH{dollar}\\sb{lcub}\\rm o{rcub}{dollar} (condition where mineral surface is electrically neutral) …

The Persistence Of Radiation-Induced Chromosome Aberrations In Mice., Michelle Denise Spruill Jan 1997

The Persistence Of Radiation-Induced Chromosome Aberrations In Mice., Michelle Denise Spruill

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As translocations increase in popularity for use as a biodosimeter for prior radiation exposure, information on the possible decline of these 'stable' aberrations over time is desperately needed. This study is the first to assess the stability of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in vivo over the life span of a rodent model. C57BL/6 female mice were given an acute dose of 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 Gy {dollar}\\sp{lcub}137{rcub}{dollar}Cs of 8 weeks of age. Metaphase chromosome preparations were made from peripheral blood and bone marrow samples which were taken from 4 mice in each dose group at 1, 8, 15 and …

The Ecology Of Darters In The Elk River, West Virginia., Stuart Andrew Welsh Jan 1997

The Ecology Of Darters In The Elk River, West Virginia., Stuart Andrew Welsh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The darter fauna in the Elk River, West Virginia, is extremely diverse (18 species); however, few studies exist on its ecology. This dissertation, which consists of three manuscripts, provides data on the ecology of darters within the Elk River. In the first manuscript, I estimated allozyme variation in the Tippecanoe (Etheostoma tippecanoe) and golden (Etheostoma denoncourti) darters, fishes with extremely fragmented distributions. Despite our findings of low variation at 22 loci, frequency differences at Pgm and Pgdh separated E. tippecanoe and E. denoncourti. The second manuscript is a study of microhabitat use and partitioning in ten darter species. While snorkeling, …

Familiar Stories: Plain-Spoken Poetry From A Missouri Woman, W. Carolyn Smith

Theses

This project started as an exercise in a creative writing cluster class. Then I paid a visit to my mother and heard a couple of stories about two nephews that were poignant, yet amusing. I wrote them as I heard them, in conversational style, and the format of my story-poems was born.

The first three chapters cover my background, my training, the influences on my writing, and specifically, examples of three authors whose writing encouraged me to write. The training emphasized factual writing in business communications and journalism. Because of this training, most of the facts in the poems are …
