Changes Over Twelve Years In Populations Of Glossina Pallidipes And Glossina Longipennis (Diptera: Glossinidae) Subject To Varying Trapping Pressure At Nguruman, South-West Kenya, R. Brightwell, R. D. Dransfield, P. Stevenson, B. Williams
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Long term changes in the size of populations of the tsetse Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. longipennis Corti Were monitored over a 12 year period at Nguruman in south-western Kenya. Tsetse populations were subject to droughts of varying intensity and, from 1987, to trapping, initially by a research organization, and later by a community-based development project. Populations were mainly sampled using odour-baited biconical traps, with data from other monitoring traps corrected accordingly. Mark-release-recapture studies were carried out to relate trap catches to absolute population size, and to quantify movement between subpopulations. Trypanosomiasis incidence rates in a herd of local cattle …

Lived Body Architecture : An Argument For Lived Bodies In Architecture And An Exploration Of Women's Lived Bodies In Society, Sherri A. Scribner
Lived Body Architecture : An Argument For Lived Bodies In Architecture And An Exploration Of Women's Lived Bodies In Society, Sherri A. Scribner
Theses
This thesis is about architecture's current disregard for the lived body and about the lived bodily experiences of women in Western society. Although these seem to be two different themes, they are connected. Architecture disregards the lived body, but it can never escape it. Architects design buildings from their own lived experiences of the world and architectural theorists most often write about architecture from their experience of being in the buildings they discuss. But because architecture has been built and discussed predominantly by men, Western theories of architecture reflect mainly a male interpretation. I begin by analyzing the paradigms of …

The Hawaiian Cave Planthoppers (Homoptera: Fulgoroidea: Cixiidae) - A Model For Rapid Subterranean Speciation?, Hannelore Hoch
International Journal of Speleology
After the successful colonization of a single ancestral species in the Hawaiian Islands, planthoppers of the cixiid genus Oliarus underwent intensive adaptive radiation resulting in 80 described endemic species. Oliarus habitats range from montaneous rain forests to dry coastal biotopes and subterranean environments. At least 7 independant evolutionary lines represented by different species have adapted to lava tubes on Molokai (1), Maui (3), and Hawaii Island (3). Behavioral and morphological studies on one of these evolutionary lines on Hawaii Island, the blind, flight- and pigmentless Oliarus polyphentus have provided evidence for reproductive isolation between allopatric populations which may in fact …
Presidential Rulemaking, Peter L. Strauss
Presidential Rulemaking, Peter L. Strauss

One of the prominent issues during the 1992 presidential campaign was abortion, in particular the federal government's role in financing counseling activities that might promote it. In the Bush Administration, the Department of Health and Human Services had adopted a controversial regulation to withhold federal funds from any family planning or other medical service that included counseling about abortion in its activities; the Clinton campaign promised to rescind that regulation if Clinton were elected President. Shortly after his election, in a prominent White House ceremony, President Clinton announced that he had directed the rescission of the prior rule and the …

when she was 24 years old (or so she claimed) and the beautiful toast of London literary circles. Her first novel. The Confessions of the Nun of St. Omer, was written when she was eighteen (or 28, depending on what biographical source one credits) and in the grip of an infatuation with the excessive gothicism of Lewis' The Monk} Dacre's novels by 1809 were ridiculed as "lovely ROSA's prose" by Byron, who went on to mock the novels as "prose in masquerade/Whose strains, the faithful echoes of her mind,/Leave wondering comprehension far behind" (English Bards and Scotch Reviewers, 756-58). What Law Is Like, George P. Fletcher
What Law Is Like, George P. Fletcher

It is not easy to do philosophy in the tradition of Wittgenstein and Malcolm. The human mind gravitates toward authority – the Bible, great teachers, poets, gurus, even judges. Lawyers, in particular, are captives of authoritive constitutions, statutes, cases, and ruling doctrines. We cannot make a move without citing a source as a backup.
Perhaps this is the way it should be, for as lawyers or legal theorists, we speak in a particular legal culture and tradition. We cultivate that tradition, even as we dissent and subject it to criticism. The tradition is defined by the authorities that have shaped …

Learning, Working, Managing, Sharing: The New Paradigm Of The Learning Organization, Barry Sugarman
Learning, Working, Managing, Sharing: The New Paradigm Of The Learning Organization, Barry Sugarman
Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice
This essay examines the idea of the "Learning Organization" and some implications of its challenge to the long-dominant "Bureaucratic" paradigm. The central thesis of the L.O. paradigm holds (1) that a key success factor for any organization in the age of global competition is its ability to innovate continuously, appropriately, and faster than its rivals., and (2) that that can only happen through releasing the untapped capabilities of all its employees. Hence the key to successful organizations lies not in the areas of better control by managers but in the areas of better learning by all workers (including managers) -- …

Contends That Hideous Strength and 1984 have the same theme, “that an objective view of morality is necessary for worthy human life.” Notes “similarities between the didactic devices which the authors employ,” such as Belbury/Oceania and Studdock/Winston, especially in their torture/ indoctrination. The biggest difference is in the resolution of both novels.

The P System: A Scheme For Organizing Pavlovian Procedures, Jose E. Burgos, Rick A. Bevins
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The present paper introduces the P system as a scheme for organizing Pavlovian procedures in an orderly and comprehensive manner. The system is defined by three temporal variables and three restrictions on their possible values. It can be used to define all standard temporal variables—namely, stimulus duration, interstimulus interval, trace interval, and intertrial interval—as well as variables C and T of scalar expectancy theory. The system also permits the definition of new independent variables through combinations of the basic temporal parameters. We exemplify this possibility by defining two ratios of temporal intervals. These ratios lead to a space where traditional …

Economic Reform And Its Impact On Women In Rural China, Haiping Luo
Economic Reform And Its Impact On Women In Rural China, Haiping Luo
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
China’s rural reform is composed of two parts - changing the old agricultural system and gradually establishing the market mechanism. The agricultural reform is characterized by the adoption of the household responsibility system. The goal of the rural reform is first to achieve effective allocation of labor and land, and second to realize equity and efficiency in rural earnings distribution.
The old agricultural system over-emphasized equality but ignored efficiency. It aimed to keep full employment and a standard wage. This gave rise to an income distribution characterized by the principle “everybody has a share in eating from the same big …

Creating A Culturally Relevant Environment For The African American Learner In The Foreign Language Classroom, Aleidine Kramer Moeller, Mary Ashcraft
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Several developments have transformed the way the foreign language classroom looks, the role the teacher and the learner assume, and the approaches and strategies we use to teach and learn second languages. These changes stem from fundamental gains in the knowledge base of how second languages are acquired and learned as well as experimental inquiry into a variety of educational innovations such as cooperative learning, multiple intelligences, and the integration of technology into the classroom. Qualitative, quantitative, and action research have provided the foreign language profession evidence upon which to make informed decisions to build a classroom environment designed to …

A Selection of Works on the History of Buffalo State
"Many professional departments and professionals working in academic departments exist on this campus, presently sixty-two in all, yet these departments do not constitute barriers. They are necessary for a balanced community. This book is the attempt of the Professional Staff Caucus to recognize all the Professionals in Buffalo State College's sesiquicenntial [125th] year. We did our best to assure that the information was correct, given what records still exist in paper form and in people's memories. We would like to thank all who consented to having their photographs taken and especially to those who contributed to, or wrote each of …

Gulf and Caribbean Research
Carapace length, carapace width, and weight relationships are discussed for the golden crab, Chaceon fenneri, and the red crab, Chaceon quinquedens, from the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Males of both species were significantly larger than females in comparisons of means of all measured parameters. Relationships between carapace length and carapace width, carapace length and weight, and carapace width and weight were similar between Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico populations for both species.

Effect Of Extended Light On Growth And Fall Reproductive Performance Of Crossbred Ewe Lambs, A. L. Slyter, Dana Hanson, G. Anderson, Bruce Read
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1997
Previous work at SDSU and numerous other stations has shown poor success in getting ewe lambs to lamb for their first time in the fall. Under natural conditions during the spring (April-May), day length is increasing which inhibits cyclic activity in the ewe. Exposure to short days has been shown to stimulate estrous activity. However, facilities necessary to achieve a light tight chamber on a large scale is not cost effective. It was hypothesized that if day length is artificially extended prior to the anticipated breeding season and allowed to return to a natural shorter day cyclic activity might be …

Aboriginal Lands And Resources: An Assessment Of The Royal Commission's Recommendations, Kent Mcneil
Articles & Book Chapters
The Aboriginal peoples have been living on the land in what is now Canada and deriving their livelihood from its natural resources for thousands of years. Elder Alex Stead, at a public hearing held by the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (RCAP) in Winnipeg on April 22, 1992, put it this way: "We are so close to the land. This is my body when you see this mother earth, because I live by it. Without that water, we dry up, we die. Without food from the animals, we die, because we got to live on that. That's why I call …
Nature Of Rules And The Meaning Of Meaning, Kent Greenawalt
Nature Of Rules And The Meaning Of Meaning, Kent Greenawalt
Faculty Scholarship
This essay addresses two problems in legal theory. What is the nature of rules, especially legal rules? What is the meaning of a legal rule?
My main concern is the relation between these two questions. I inquire whether a sensible view of how rules work commits one to any particular approach to meaning. For this inquiry, I focus on Frederick Schauer's illuminating treatment of rules in Playing by the Rules, which he says is linked to a particular view of meaning. I assert that the linkage is much less tight than he supposes, and that competing theories about meaning are …
