Why is Portia such a crucial and overdetermined character for so many commentators, and for so many legal commentators in particular? Why has so much ink been spilled, with such vehemence and even vitriol, over what is in the end a fictive character in a play written in the late sixteenth century? My answer first invokes the framework outlined in Michael Walzer's Spheres of Justice. . . . I then argue that this framework, when applied to The Merchant of Venice, explains our obsession with Portia. . . . Third, I argue that while we view Portia's virtuosity in defining …

Zooplankton Variability And Copepod Species Assemblages From A Tropical Coastal Lagoon, J.N. Alvarez-Cadena, L. Segura-Puertas Jan 1997

Zooplankton Variability And Copepod Species Assemblages From A Tropical Coastal Lagoon, J.N. Alvarez-Cadena, L. Segura-Puertas

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Results of monthly zooplankton sampling, carried out from December 1990 to November 1991, are compared from three localities in the Mexican Caribbean. Two stations, Bojórquez, and Cuenca Norte, represent partially enclosed areas of the Nichupté Lagoon System in the northeastern region of the Yucatán Peninsula; a third station was located in adjacent neritic waters. At the neritic station, temperature was lower, salinity was higher, and variations in the two parameters smaller as compared to the two lagoon stations. Zooplankton abundance ranged from 3585.5 org./m3 at the neritic station to 18,742.7 org./m3 at Cuenca Norte. Considering all animals collected, …

Using Snapshot Streams To Support Visual Exploration, Delbert Hart, Eileen Kraemer, Gruia-Catalin Roman Jan 1997

Using Snapshot Streams To Support Visual Exploration, Delbert Hart, Eileen Kraemer, Gruia-Catalin Roman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The non-determinism, complexity, and size of distributed software systems present significant difficulties for designers and maintainers. Visualization can help alleviate these difficulties through interactive exploratory tools that allow both novice and experienced users to investigate a distributed computation using a common tool set. Essential to the success of a visual exploration tool is the ability to provide accurate representations of global states. This paper is concerned with the use of snapshots in support of interactive visual exploration of distributed computations. The nature of the visualization process requires snapshots that (1) are consecutive, thus facilitating smooth animation of state changes, (2) …

A Study Of The "Grassroots Integrated Development Agency" In Uganda, John B. D. Kakembo Jan 1997

A Study Of The "Grassroots Integrated Development Agency" In Uganda, John B. D. Kakembo

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

When poverty in Uganda deepened due to the miseries and destabilization caused by economic mismanagement, turbulent politics, and the incessant civil wars in Uganda up to 1985, all public, private, and religious organizations were adversely affected. At the end of 1985, conditions in the Seventh-day Adventist church were characterized by massive poverty among its rural membership, a slow church-growth annual rate of 4.9 percent--the lowest tithe per capita in the Eastern Africa Division (EAD)--and the lowest remuneration scales for pastors in the EAD. In 1986, an indigenous, grassroots organization sprouted in the SDA church under the leadership of a …

Toward A Theology Of Youth Ministry And Its Praxis In The Local Church, Luis Fernando Ortiz Jan 1997

Toward A Theology Of Youth Ministry And Its Praxis In The Local Church, Luis Fernando Ortiz

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

In many Seventh-day Adventist churches in North America patterns of non involvement among the youth were observed. Young people were attending church on Sabbath, but almost none of them were leaders. The objective of this dissertation was to identify biblical principles for the development of a youth ministry in which leaders build responsible servant leaders and encourage young people to grow, learn, and use their gifts in Christian ministry.

Method

The Scriptures were searched for a biblical background for youth work and principles for successful youth involvement. The word “youth” was analyzed in the Old and New Testaments together …

Achievements In Wool 1997, Agriculture Western Australia

Animal production and livestock published reports

The Wool Strategy Group, which I initiated in 1993, and Agriculture Western Australia's Wool Program are strategic partners working together with industry to develop and market this State's wool industry.

Wool is Western Australia's second most important agricultural industry, with a current export value of $643 million. It has the potential to return to a billion dollar industry in the next five years and the industry needs to be strongly focused on producing what the market requires to take advantage of this.

The Wool Strategy Group, led by Chairman Mr Philip Gardiner, and the Wool Program, have established an international …

Engineering Perfect Offspring: Devaluing Children And Childhood, Wendy Anton Fitzgerald Jan 1997

Engineering Perfect Offspring: Devaluing Children And Childhood, Wendy Anton Fitzgerald

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In this Essay, Professor Fitzgerald observes that the law and practice governing medical treatment decisions for seriously ill and disabled newborn children requires physicians and parents to compare such children with an unstated norm. She discerhs that our jurisprudence informs that unstated norm with an exclusive model of legal personhood, that of the autonomous individual, an independent and self-sufficient adult. Parents and physicians may conclude, then, that a seriously ill or disabled newborn child who cannot eventually become an autonomous adult should not receive life-saving or life-prolonging treatment. Professor Fitzgerald suggests that this treatment paradigm parallels a cultural resurgence of …

The Presence Of A Dog Increases Greetings: A Study In Social Intervention, Emily Dunlap, Lori Graham, April Burton, Chassity Roberts Jan 1997

The Presence Of A Dog Increases Greetings: A Study In Social Intervention, Emily Dunlap, Lori Graham, April Burton, Chassity Roberts

Modern Psychological Studies

Pet dogs served many useful purposes, especially by provoking social interaction in the lives of their owners. The purpose of this study was to show that a person accompanied by a dog received more greetings from passersby than a person without a dog. This was a field study using a female confederate, a dog, and three observers. Subjects passing in front of the confederate were recorded as a greeter or a non-greeter. Results formulated by the Chi Square showed that when the confederate was with the dog, they were greeted significantly more than when they were not accompanied by the …

Constitutionalism And International Organizations, Ernst-Ulrich Petersmann Jan 1997

Constitutionalism And International Organizations, Ernst-Ulrich Petersmann

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Peaceful cooperation among individuals and among states has be- come a globally recognized policy objective. The worldwide trend to- wards deregulation, market economies, protection of human rights and democracies reflects an increasing recognition that individual freedom, non-discrimination and rule of law are the best conditions for promoting individual and collective self-determination and social welfare. But in contrast to the long-standing constitutional theories for national democracies, there is a troubling paucity of theory on how to achieve a peaceful international order based on worldwide liberal rules. During the first half of the 20th century, government policies in international relations continued to …

Accountability And International Lawmaking: Rules, Rents And Legitimacy, Paul B. Stephan Jan 1997

Accountability And International Lawmaking: Rules, Rents And Legitimacy, Paul B. Stephan

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The domain of legal rules laid down by international bodies has grown enormously. Laws that have an international source influence a far larger portion of the world's commerce today than they did sixty or even twenty years ago. The enhanced significance and conse- quences of these laws raises an important question: What safeguards do we employ to increase the chances that they will do some good? More specifically, what processes hold international lawmakers ac- countable for their decisions?

Effects Of Two (Diptera: Culicidae) Mosquito Control Agents On Growth And Reproduction Of Red-Winged Blackbirds (Agelaius Phoeniceus), Joann M. Hanowski, Gerald J. Niemi, Ann R. Lima, Ronald R. Regal

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

We compared red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) reproductive success and nestling growth in 1988 in 10 wetland site treated with methoprene and 10 sites treated with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) to 30 sites that had never received any mosquito (Diptera: culicidae) control treatment. No differences were detected between reference and treatment sites for clutch size, egg volume, growth rates, or fledge weight. The probability that an egg survived to the nestling stage was greater in methoprene-treated than reference sites. No other differences were detected among sites for reproductive success estimated using the Mayfield method. We conclude that treatment of the wetlands …

The Legal Characterization Of God In The Pentateuch, James W. Watts Jan 1997

The Legal Characterization Of God In The Pentateuch, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

The Pentateuch develops God's character in stories of divine creation and destruction, promise and fulfillment, battle and redemption. The laws of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers supplement such direct characterization by the impressions provided by YHWH's speech. Speeches always indirectly characterize their speaker by providing the basis for inferring the kind of person who talks this way. So the law codes voiced directly by God provide a powerful impression of the divine character.

Effects Of A Sugar-Free Hypoallerdenic Diet And Nutrtional Supplementation On Ulcerative Colitis, William (Bill) H. Williams, Robert C. Atkins Md, Joel S. Edman Jan 1997

Effects Of A Sugar-Free Hypoallerdenic Diet And Nutrtional Supplementation On Ulcerative Colitis, William (Bill) H. Williams, Robert C. Atkins Md, Joel S. Edman

Publications and Research

Few clinical studies have found that dietary or nutritional factors significantly influence ulcerative colitis (UC}(l,2}. It is noteworthy, however, that a range of factors have been researched including dietary components such as refined sugars (3,4}, allergenic foods (1,5,6} and fast foods (7), as well as nutritional supplement effects from fish oil (2), zinc (8), glutamine (9), folate (10, 11} and alpha-tocopherolquinone (12}. More recently investigators have also examined the interelationships between bowel flora and UC, including factors such as flora changes (13,14), endotoxemia (15} and supplementation effects with Lactobacillous species (16,17). These studies taken together and a recent review of …

In field trials conducted at the Experiment Station and in a farmer's field at Mbita near the shores of Lake Victoria, Kenya, applications of 2% or 3% neem seed extract (NSE) @ 200 l/ha with a knapsack sprayer at 38, 47 and 51 days after emergence (DE) of the cowpea crop or 5%, 10% or 20% NSE sprayed @ 10 l/ha with an ultra-low-volume applicator at 31, 39 and 49 DE often significantly reduced the number of larvae of the flower thrips, Megalurothrips sjostedti (Trybom), in cowpea flowers recorded 2 days after each treatment. Also fewer adults occurred in flowers …

Diel Activity Patterns And Host Preferences Of Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes (Diptera: Glossinidae) Along The Shores Of Lake Victoria, Kenya, M. M. Mohamed-Ahmed, A. Odulaja Jan 1997

Diel Activity Patterns And Host Preferences Of Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes (Diptera: Glossinidae) Along The Shores Of Lake Victoria, Kenya, M. M. Mohamed-Ahmed, A. Odulaja

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Diurnal activity patterns and host preference of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes Newstead were studied in forest and linear habitats along Lake Victoria shore, Kenya. The objective was to identify the preferred hosts of G. f. fuscipes, the emanations of which may be attractive to this species. Hourly catches of flies in biconical traps were related to changes in the weather and the prevalence of hosts in the vicinity of traps. Flies were mainly active between 0800 and 1600 h, with males peaking around 1100 h and females around 1300 h. Activity of flies correlated directly with light intensity and temperature, but …
