Particle Size And Temperature Affect Fecal Bacteria Survival In Sediment, Mark S. Coyne, J. M. Howell, P. L. Cornelius Jan 1997

Particle Size And Temperature Affect Fecal Bacteria Survival In Sediment, Mark S. Coyne, J. M. Howell, P. L. Cornelius

Agronomy Notes

When cattle have direct access to streams, fecal bacteria concentrations in stream sediments increase. If these bacteria persist, and if the sediments are resuspended, fecal bacteria may also appear in surrounding water for extended periods. Why do fecal bacteria persist, since dry conditions, high acidity or alkalinity, sunlight, competition from native microbes, and extreme temperatures all diminish their populations in soil? The effects of these environmental factors are much reduced in sediment. Water protects fecal bacteria from desiccation and ultraviolet light. High temperatures can promote their regrowth in wet environments. Fecal bacteria also survive on fine-sized sediments in streams because …

Soil Management For Intensive Grazing, Kenneth L. Wells, Charles T. Dougherty Jan 1997

Soil Management For Intensive Grazing, Kenneth L. Wells, Charles T. Dougherty

Soil Science News and Views

Recycling of plant nutrients is of major concern in managing paddocks in pasturefields for intensive grazing. Redistribution of nutrients present in fecal and urine deposits is an important issue in growing climatically and seasonally-adapted forage species and for efficient conversion of herbage into animal products while adding to the sustainability of the system. Some of the questions that arise in managing soils for intensive grazing are discussed below.

Genetics, Genetic Testing, And The Specter Of Discrimination: A Discussion Using Hypothetical Cases, Richard H. Underwood, Ronald C. Cadle Jan 1997

Genetics, Genetic Testing, And The Specter Of Discrimination: A Discussion Using Hypothetical Cases, Richard H. Underwood, Ronald C. Cadle

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

A "genetic revolution" is upon us. Techniques for genetic testing have increased in sophistication, and an international effort to map and sequence human DNA—The Human Genome Project ("HGP")—is now well under way. We are beginning to exploit our new found genetic knowledge. Recognition of the relationship between developments in genetic science, law, and public policy, is creeping into the "literature" and into the law school curriculum. Even the popular 60 Minutes television "news magazine" recently did a program on the perils of genetic testing. Still, for lawyers and policymakers at least, the material is not all that accessible.

Fresh-Water Aquifer In The Knox Group (Cambrian–Ordovician) Of Central Kentucky, James A. Kipp Jan 1997

Fresh-Water Aquifer In The Knox Group (Cambrian–Ordovician) Of Central Kentucky, James A. Kipp

Report of Investigations--KGS

Fresh water can be found in Cambrian and Ordovician carbonate rocks of the Knox Group in central Kentucky. The top of the aquifer is as much as 300 ft above mean sea level (m.s.l.) on the crest of the Cincinnati Arch, but descends off the flanks of the arch. Water is normally found in the upper 100 to 250 ft of the Knox, primarily in secondary porosity apparently associated with the unconformity at the top of the unit. Knox wells commonly exceed 750 ft in total depth, but because the aquifer is artesian, water rises to an elevation of about …

The Thirsty Cow And And Important Distinction, Priscilla Cohn Jan 1997

The Thirsty Cow And And Important Distinction, Priscilla Cohn

Animal Law Review

The scope of animal rights is much broader than the vast majority of individuals believe. People spend little time considering how our legal system's treatment of animals affects society. Thw law, created to protect beings from harm, has time and again proven itself a stubborn, static creation. Hozever, through the efforts of people who have recognized the law's shortcomings and have sought to correct thm, justice may eventually prevail. Un1fortunately, the best means by which to accomplish justice for animals is not clear, and disagreements inevitably arise. The essays which follow are written by exparts from various interdisciplinaryf ields at …

The Rise Of Equine Liability Activity Acts, Sharlene A. Mcevoy

Animal Law Review

In recent years, the equine industry has become concerned by court decisions which undermine the traditional view that persons who participate in horseback riding activities assume the risk of any iJ\iury they incur. Ms. McEvoy examines significant cases and state statutes designed to meet the challenges posed by these decisions, as well as the legislative history behind a Connecticut statute.

Animal Rights Theory And Utilitarianism: Relative Normative Guidance, Gary L. Francione Jan 1997

Animal Rights Theory And Utilitarianism: Relative Normative Guidance, Gary L. Francione

Animal Law Review

Mr. Francione examines the philosophies of Peter Singer and Tom Regan and concludes, in part, that there is nothing in rights theory that necessarily precludes the animal advocate from pursuing incremental legislative or judicial change; however, he asserts that we cannot speak meaningfully of legal rights for animals as long as animals are regarded as property.

Biotechnology And The Patenting Of Living Organisms, Matthew Mcgovern Jan 1997

Biotechnology And The Patenting Of Living Organisms, Matthew Mcgovern

Animal Law Review

Mr. McGovern discusses the reasoning behind the leap from patentability of non-living things to the living thing~ within the last twenty years. He concludes that neither the Supreme Court or Court of Customs and Patent Appeals has offered a convincing rationale for the inclusion of living things within 35 U.S.C. Section 101.

Helping Children Cope With Grief And Death, Kim Noon Jan 1997

Helping Children Cope With Grief And Death, Kim Noon

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Children need their parents, family, friends, teachers, doctors, and clergy to help them move through a death experience positively. Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross (1983) says that family members who have been able to talk together and share their experiences with other family members, hospital staff, or with a compassionate clergy or friend , usually do much better than those who hold all of their feelings inside, pretending that life goes on as usual. Grief and fear, when allowed to be expressed and shared in childhood, can prevent much future heartache. It is so important for all of us to again learn …

Diagnosis Of Livestock Production In Three Communities (Tunshi San Javier, San Antonio And Maria Auxiliadora) Using The Chambo Irrigation System - Guano, Egresado ÁNgel Montalvo Silva

Theses and Dissertations

During 43 weeks three communities belonging to the Chambo-Guano irrigation system (María Auxiliadora, San Antonio, and Tunshi San Javier) were studied. Each family had 0.662 ± 0.149 producing cows, 0.115 ± 0.048 dry cows, 0.381 ± 0.095 heifers, 0.252 ± 0.068 young bulls, 0.158 ± 0.052 bulls, and 0.568 ± 0.096 calves. The age at first mounting (21.696 ± 9.28 months) showed that the cows enter reproduction late. Of the cows, 71.94 ± 5.26% were of household varieties. To feed them, alfalfa was used at 79.86 ± 4.5%, undergrowth 56.83 ± 5.62%, corn stalks 48.2 ± 6.02%, kikuyu 19.42 ± …

Incorporating The Ti-92 Into A High School Classroom, Heather Golliher Jan 1997

Incorporating The Ti-92 Into A High School Classroom, Heather Golliher

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Calculators have been a part of mathematics for years. More recently, the graphing calculator has been widely accepted as a mathematical tool. The Tl-92 has the capability to take this technology integration a step further. It has been described as having "the power of a computer with the independence of a graphing calculator." With the geometry package and the symbolic manipulation unique to the Tl-92, the question becomes, how should this technology be coordinated with the existing curricula in high school classrooms to make the learning and teaching of mathematics as exciting and relevant as possible?
