Digestibility Of Dry-Rolled Corn, Wet Corn Gluten Feed, And Alfalfa Hay In Receiving And Finishing Diets, Rob Mccoy, Chris Richards, Tony Scott, Rick Stock, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Dan Herold

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Crude protein of wet corn gluten feed is degraded extensively in the rumen. Thus, protein supplementation is an important consideration when feeding wet corn gluten feed, especially in receiving diets.

Experimental Models Of Mycobacterial Replication And Killing In Macrophages, Pairote Laochumroonvorapong Jan 1997

Experimental Models Of Mycobacterial Replication And Killing In Macrophages, Pairote Laochumroonvorapong

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates how human mononuclear phagocytes regulate the growth of mycobacteria. Previous studies carried out in our laboratory suggested that cell turnover [apoptosis and necrosis] within a granuloma may contribute to the control of mycobacterial infection. The experiments described here demonstrated that both apoptosis [Fas-mediated] and necrosis [perforin-induced] of infected human monocytes do not affect the survival of intracellular mycobacteria in an in vitro infection model. To determine the role of apoptosis and necrosis on mycobacterial infection in vivo, perforin gene-disrupted mice and Fas receptor-defective mice were experimentally infected with mycobacteria. The loss of either intact Fas pathway or …

International Market Opportunities For Field Peas, Andrew Quinn, Malcolm Sedgwick Jan 1997

International Market Opportunities For Field Peas, Andrew Quinn, Malcolm Sedgwick

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

The purpose of this report is to determine, through desk top statistical analysis, key countries which hold significant promise for the export expansion of the Western Australian field pea industry.

The report is comprised of five parts. 1) a brief field pea overview, 2) world field pea production and trade, 3) Australian field pea production and trade, 4) Western Australian field pea production and trade and 5) conclusions.

The first four sections aim to identify the major producers, exporters, importers and premium markets operating in the international field pea market. The fifth section concludes by identifying six countries that warrant …

Characterization Of The Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration Antigen Cdr2, John Peter Corradi Jan 1997

Characterization Of The Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration Antigen Cdr2, John Peter Corradi

Student Theses and Dissertations

Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is a remote effect of breast and ovarian cancer on the nervous system. It is believed to arise when these tumors ectopically express a neuron-specific protein, thereby initiating an anti-tumor immune response that subsequently develops into a neuronal degeneration. Three cerebellar degeneration related (cdr) genes encoding putative antigens were previously identified using PCD antisera. We have demonstrated that cdr2, which encodes a cytoplasmic coiled-coil leucine zipper protein, is the only cdr gene expressed in PCD-associated tumors, and is therefore the true PCD tumor antigen. We have isolated the mouse cdr2 homologue and examined expression of the …

Factors Influencing Activity Levels In Nasonia Vitripennis, Katherine Grimm Jan 1997

Factors Influencing Activity Levels In Nasonia Vitripennis, Katherine Grimm

Honors Capstones

The effects of mating status and competition for suitable hosts on the overall activity and flight behavior of Nasonia vitripennis were investigated by observing the wasps' activity in a terrarium setting. N . vitripennis is a small, nonmigratory wasp that parasitizes fly pupae. This species, as well as other parasitoids, may be used in biological control of pest fly populations. Mated females were found to be significantly more active overall versus virgins for a duration of up to two hours after mating, regardless of whether or not the females were exposed to a suitable host. After a five day duration, …

Attaining Systems For Sustainability Through Environmental Law, Nicholas A. Robinson Jan 1997

Attaining Systems For Sustainability Through Environmental Law, Nicholas A. Robinson

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Five years have passed since the historic Earth Summit. Although significant progress has been made since Rio, much remains to be done. Poverty and environment degradation continue to affect the lives of millions of people in many parts of the world. Global warming, the loss of biological diversity, the spread of deserts, deforestation, the crisis in many of our cities remind us every day of the challenges which confront us. The unsustainable patterns of consumption and production continue to be the major cause of environmental degradation worldwide. This is therefore not an occasion for complacency or mindless celebration. It is, …

Farm Women And Work : Required But Not Recognised, Fiona M. Haslam-Mckenzie Jan 1997

Farm Women And Work : Required But Not Recognised, Fiona M. Haslam-Mckenzie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Across Australia, government sponsored Rural Women's Networks have been established to encourage rural women to look beyond their individual context and to identify as part of a much larger group of women, all with common concerns. These networks have encouraged women to view themselves as legitimate participants in a patriarchal society and to realise that the traditional male culture of farming is redundant. Fiona M. Haslam-McKenzie, a lecturer in the Faculty of Business at Edith Cowan University, reviews the recognition given to women on the farm.

Using Citizen Suits To Protect Biodiversity, William Snape Jan 1997

Using Citizen Suits To Protect Biodiversity, William Snape

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

INTRODUCTION: Over the past several decades, environmental advocates have expended enormous effort attempting to pass laws that protect air, water, land and species.' But even the best written laws will not be effective unless they are implemented. At the federal level, most modern environmental statutes include enforcement mechanisms that allow for the active involvement of the public. The most common of these are provisions authorizing citizen suits and public comments on proposed agency actions. The rationale for this public involvement is simply that federal agencies sometimes do not enforce or obey the laws they are charged to uphold. For instance, …

Tolerance Of Eastern Gamagrass To Excess Aluminum In Acid Soil And Nutrient Solution, C. D. Foy Jan 1997

Tolerance Of Eastern Gamagrass To Excess Aluminum In Acid Soil And Nutrient Solution, C. D. Foy

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Eastern gamagrass, Tripsacum dactyloides L., has been reported to tolerate a wide variety of soil conditions, including drought, flooding, and acidity, but its specific tolerance to aluminum (Al) has not been tested. One strain of this species, PMK Select Lot 94 SFG-1, was tested for its tolerance to excess Al in an acid, Al-toxic Tatum subsoil (clayey, mixed, thermic, Typic Hapludult) and in nutrient solutions containing Al. Roots were able to penetrate unfertilized Tatum subsoil at pH levels as low as 4.1-4.2 (1:1 soil-water), at Al saturations of 64 to 77% of CEC, and to tolerate Al concentrations in nutrient …
