Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archeologists from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) conducted test excavations seven prehistoric archeological sites along Loop 375 in south-central El Paso County during December and January of 1995. Results of the test excavations indicate that the seven sites, namely, 41EP4847, 41EP4823, 41EP4819, 41EP4825, 41EP4826, 41EP4827, and 41EP4829 do not meet the established eligibility criteria for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This assessment is based on the observed absence of intact, non-redundant subsurface remains at the sites.

In May 1994, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) conducted extensive test excavations at archeological site 41RK195. Located in the path of proposed Loop 571 around Henderson, the site had already been seriously impacted by a sand quarrying operation. Lying atop a large hill near the confluence of Bromley Creek and Flanigan Branch, site 41RK195, now almost totally destroyed, is believed to have been a major site of the region. The small number of artifacts found, in addition to a few seen in private collections, indicates a long history of human habitation for this multicomponent site, including occupation of the …

Mechanisms Of Infaunal Polychaete Dispersal And Colonization In An Intertidal Sandflat, David H. Shull Jan 1997

Mechanisms Of Infaunal Polychaete Dispersal And Colonization In An Intertidal Sandflat, David H. Shull

Journal of Marine Research

Changes in benthic infaunal population densities following disturbance may be influenced by colonization mechanisms. Accordingly, this study experimentally examined the relative importance of four colonization mechanisms for seven numerically dominant polychaete species in an intertidal estuarine sandflat in Connecticut, USA. The colonization mechanism an organism used depended upon species characteristics including larval developmental mode and depth distribution within the sediment. A spionid polychaete with planktonic larval development, Polydora cornuta, colonized experimental disturbance treatments primarily by larval settlement. A surface-dwelling syllid polychaete with nonplanktonic development, Streptosyllis arenae, colonized mainly by bedload transport. Two syllid polychaetes developmentally and morphologically similar …

Rapid Subduction Of Organic Matter By Maldanid Polychaetes On The North Carolina Slope, L. Levin, N. Blair, D. Demaster, G. Plaia, W. Fornes, C. Martin, C. Thomas Jan 1997

Rapid Subduction Of Organic Matter By Maldanid Polychaetes On The North Carolina Slope, L. Levin, N. Blair, D. Demaster, G. Plaia, W. Fornes, C. Martin, C. Thomas

Journal of Marine Research

In situ tracer experiments conducted on the North Carolina continental slope reveal that tube-building worms (Polychaeta: Maldanidae) can, without ingestion, rapidly subduct freshly deposited, algal carbon (13C-labeled diatoms) and inorganic materials (slope sediment and glass beads) to depths of 10 cm or more in the sediment column. Transport over 1.5 days appears to be nonselective but spatially patchy, creating localized, deep hotspots. As a result of this transport, relatively fresh organic matter becomes available soon after deposition to deep-dwelling microbes and other infauna, and both aerobic and anaerobic processes may be enhanced. Comparison of tracer subduction with estimates …

Digestive Environments Of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Guts: Enzymes, Surfactants And Dissolved Organic Matter, Lawrence M. Mayer, Linda L. Schick, Robert F. L. Self, Peter A. Jumars, Robert H. Findlay, Zhen Chen, Stephen Sampson Jan 1997

Digestive Environments Of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Guts: Enzymes, Surfactants And Dissolved Organic Matter, Lawrence M. Mayer, Linda L. Schick, Robert F. L. Self, Peter A. Jumars, Robert H. Findlay, Zhen Chen, Stephen Sampson

Journal of Marine Research

Hydrolytic enzyme activity, surfactancy, and dissolved organic matter in the digestive lumens of 19 benthic echinoderm and polychaete species were examined, using consistent and quantifiable methods. Enzyme activities were compared with those of extracellular enzymes from ambient sediments. Enzyme activities ranged over five orders of magnitude, with averages decreasing in the order polychaetes > echinoderms > sediment. Highest activities in animals were usually associated with the fluid phase in midgut sections, with posteriorward decreases indicating little export to the external environment. At some phyletic levels, activity correlated inversely with animal size. Hydrolase patterns reflected food type; for example, high lipase:protease ratios in …

Eastern South Dakota Wetlands, Rex R. Johnson, Kenneth F. Higgins, Michael L. Kjellsen, Charles R. Elliot

Natural Resource Management Faculty Books

Diverse and extensive wetland resources have always been familiar parts of the landscape to farmers, hunters, and residents of eastern South Dakota. The journals and oral histories of adventurers, trappers, and natives and immigrants reveal how wetlands shaped the wildlife and the people who lived on and modified the land to meet their own needs. The history of South Dakota wetlands parallels the history and interactions of people and wetlands elsewhere in North America and the world. This interaction can best be characterized as constant conflict. Driven primarily by economics, farmers the world over expended tremendous energy to "reclaim" and …

Conquering A Wilderness: Destruction And Development On The Great Plains In Mari Sandoz's Old Jules, Lisa Lindell Jan 1997

Conquering A Wilderness: Destruction And Development On The Great Plains In Mari Sandoz's Old Jules, Lisa Lindell

Hilton M. Briggs Library Faculty Publications

Jules Ami Sandoz came to America in 1881 at the age of 22. Following a three-year sojourn in northeastern Nebraska, he headed further west, settling in the recently surveyed region northwest of the Nebraska Sandhills. In Old Jules, the biography of her pioneer father, Mari Sandoz presented a character filled with conflicts and contradictions. Pitted against Jules's dynamic vision of community growth was his self-centered and destructive nature. Well aware of the more unsavory qualities exhibited by her father. Sandoz nonetheless maintained that he and others like him were necessary to the development of the West. This recognition did not …

8th Annual Idaho Public Policy Survey, David F. Scudder Jan 1997

8th Annual Idaho Public Policy Survey, David F. Scudder

Annual Idaho Public Policy Surveys

1994 the university expanded public participation in developing the survey questions by inviting the public to form the Idaho Public Policy Survey Group (IPPSG), a consortium of interested state and local government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the private sector. The IPPSG provided a mechanism whereby community organizations could sponsor individual questions and collectively fund surveys that otherwise would not be possible. The survey results meet the individual needs of the participants for less cost and far greater public impact than if any single participant attempted to conduct a survey on its own. The IPPSG also provided a forum in which …

Leafy Spurge - A Review, Sharon A. Clay, Chad M. Scholes Jan 1997

Leafy Spurge - A Review, Sharon A. Clay, Chad M. Scholes

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) is a perennial herbaceous weed that infests millions of acres of range and pasture in the northern Great Plains. It outcompetes grasses and lowers land productivity because cattle will not graze infested areas even if spurge makes up only 10% of the vegetative biomass. This presentation will cover the history, taxonomy, and phenology of leafy spurge. A discussion of chemical, mechanical, and biocontrol techniques that aid in leafy spurge management will also be included.
