Post-Depositional Weathering Of Cave Sediments In Berry Cave, Pulaski County, Missouri, Melissa L. Milner
Post-Depositional Weathering Of Cave Sediments In Berry Cave, Pulaski County, Missouri, Melissa L. Milner
Student Work
Berry Cave is a vadose system, and is classified as a branchwork cave with superposed anastomotic mazes. The cave is situated in the non-glaciated karst region of Roubidoux Creek in Pulaski County, south-central Missouri. Two types of sediment deposits have been identified in the cave: an allogenic fine clay fill preserved in a stream cut canyon and an autogenic/allogenic loam comprising a debris flow. The surface soil above the cave is silt loam, and is the source for the sediments o f the debris flow in Berry Cave. Three episodes o f geomorphic development have been determined to be related …

Characteristics Of Low-Income, Black, Midwestern Teenage Mothers, Lu Ellen Schorle
Student Work
Characteristics of Low-Income, Black, Midwestern Teenage Mothers is an exploratory project based on interviews with 26 Midwestern, black, and low-income adolescent mothers. Of these 26 mothers, 20 mothers had one child and six mothers had more than one child. Each interview obtained qualitative data pertaining to the participant's family background; romantic/sexual relationships; reproductive history and plans; use of and attitude toward birth control; the experience of parenting; and future ambitions for mother and child. The interview schedule also obtained quantitative data regarding the participant's cognitive perception of the environment as measured by a modified version of Martin E. P. Seligman's …
The Devil And The One Drop Rule: Racial Categories, African Americans, And The U.S. Census, Christine B. Hickman
The Devil And The One Drop Rule: Racial Categories, African Americans, And The U.S. Census, Christine B. Hickman
Michigan Law Review
For generations, the boundaries of the African-American race have been formed by a rule, informally known as the "one drop rule," which, in its colloquial definition, provides that one drop of Black blood makes a person Black. In more formal, sociological circles, the rule is known as a form of "hypodescent" and its meaning remains basically the same: anyone with a known Black ancestor is considered Black. Over the generations, this rule has not only shaped countless lives, it has created the African-American race as we know it today, and it has defined not just the history of this race …

Surviving Ethnography: Coping With Isolation, Violence, And Anger, Jennifer Harris
Surviving Ethnography: Coping With Isolation, Violence, And Anger, Jennifer Harris
The Qualitative Report
This article concentrates upon the intensities of emotion experienced by a novice ethnographer. The argument is that acknowledging the emotional impact of events in the field enables the ethnographer to analyse reflexively the differences between the values of the self and those of the other. Seeing beyond the emotions generated at times of crisis can permit and facilitate an analysis of the everyday social relations between participants. Dealing with the personal impact of these emotions is an entirely different matter; very few others (supervisors, academics, peers) although well-intentioned, will appreciate the depths of these emotions and the problems that they …

The Efficacy Of A Porcine Plasma Protein Derived Colostrum Supplement On The Surviral And Growth Retes Of Piglets, Athipoo Nuntaprasert, Vivat Chavananikul, Prachak Poomvises
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Five hundred seventy nine piglets from four standard breeder farms in four provinces of Thailand, weighing between below 1.0 kg and between 1.0-1.2 kg, were used in this trial. The animals were divided into two groups. The first group performed as control (n=239). In the second group (n=340), each piglet was given two 5 ml doses of porcine plasma protein derived colostrum supplement at the first and third day of the pig life. The results indicated that the survival and growth rates at 21 days of age in the treated group were significantly improved compared to the control group at …
The Idea Of Fairness In The Law Of Enterprise Liability, Gregory C. Keating
The Idea Of Fairness In The Law Of Enterprise Liability, Gregory C. Keating
Michigan Law Review
The theory and practice of enterprise liability are oddly disjoined. On the one hand, case rhetoric insists that considerations of fairness are among the primary justifications for imposing enterprise liability. On the other hand, normatively inclined and theoretically ambitious scholarship on enterprise liability is overwhelmingly economic in cast. Economically inclined scholars have flocked to the field, while other kinds of tort theorists have shunned it, implicitly or explicitly conceding it to economic analysis. This paper argues that, contrary to this consensus, there is a powerful and important fairness case to be made for enterprise liability. This case fits the rhetoric …
Restoring Rights To Rites: The Religious Motivation Test And The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, Steven C. Seeger
Restoring Rights To Rites: The Religious Motivation Test And The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, Steven C. Seeger
Michigan Law Review
This Note argues that the religious motivation test best secures the religious liberty guaranteed by the Constitution and the RFRA. Part I examines the text and legislative history of the Act and establishes that Congress intended to protect religiously motivated practices. Part II argues that the free exercise case law prior to Smith, to which the RFRA explicitly appeals, did not require litigants to prove centrality or compulsion. Part III demonstrates that the religious motivation test protects the full spectrum of religious practices and religious groups, unlike the centrality test and the compulsion test. Part IV illustrates that the motivation …

The Construction Of National Identity Through The Production Of Ritual And Spectacle: An Analysis Of National Day Parades In Singapore, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh
The Construction Of National Identity Through The Production Of Ritual And Spectacle: An Analysis Of National Day Parades In Singapore, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this paper, we adopt the view that 'nation' and 'national identity' are social constructions, created to serve ideological ends. We discuss this in the specific empirical context of Singapore's National Day parades. By drawing on officially produced souvenir programmes and magazines, newspaper reports, and interviews with participants and spectators, we analyse the parades between 1965 and 1994, showing how, as an annual ritual and landscape spectacle, the parades succeed to a large extent in creating a sense of awe, wonderment and admiration. Discussion focuses on four aspects of the celebrations: the site of the parades, their display and theatricality, …

Development Of A Predictive Habitat Evaluation Model For Gaillardia Aestivalis (Walt.) Rock. Var. Winkleri (Cory) Turner Using Gps, Remote Sensing And Gis Techniques, Dasyam Samuel Rajasekhar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and remote sensing techniques were utilized to characterize and subsequently predict potential habitat of Gaillardia aestivalis var. Winkleri, occurring in Hardin County, TX. Field investigations along with CIR positive aerial photographs were used to study local distribution and ecological requirements (soil, site, plant associations) of the plant. Data were obtained from paper maps, aerial photographs and a Landsat TM image. Sites occupied by G. aestivalis var. Winkleri were characterized as having highly acidic soils with poor nutrient content, good drainage and rapid permeability. Along with soil types, vegetation also is an important …

The Supreme Court, Visibility, And The "Politics Of Presence", Kathryn Abrams
The Supreme Court, Visibility, And The "Politics Of Presence", Kathryn Abrams
Vanderbilt Law Review
Jane Schacter has made a critical contribution by elaborating the meaning and potential consequences of the Court's holding in Romer v. Evans. At the center of her account is the thought-provoking suggestion that the Court's opinion enables a visibility or "presence" for gays and lesbians in the extended realm of the "political." While I salute her illumination, I am less certain about whether to share her optimism. In this Comment, I will explore the latter question by looking beyond the decision in Romer to other cases involving group-based civil rights. I will probe the effects of Supreme Court decisionmaking on …
All The Supreme Court Really Needs To Know It Learned From The Warren Court, Suzanna Sherry
All The Supreme Court Really Needs To Know It Learned From The Warren Court, Suzanna Sherry
Vanderbilt Law Review
It is accepted wisdom among constitutional law scholars that the Supreme Court is now considerably more conservative than it was during the tenure of Chief Justice Earl Warren. In this Article, I hope to suggest that the conventional wisdom is at least partly wrong. In Part I, I suggest that many of the current Court's so-called conservative cases and doctrines are direct descendants of Warren Court cases and doctrines. Although my attribution of similarity is new, the description of the cases and doctrines themselves is entirely unoriginal. Indeed, the history of the two sets of cases-of the Warren Court and …
Fidelity To Our Imperfect Constitution, James E. Fleming
Fidelity To Our Imperfect Constitution, James E. Fleming
Faculty Scholarship
What is the question of fidelity a question about? The topic of our Symposium, "Fidelity in Constitutional Theory," raises two fundamental questions: Fidelity to what? and What is fidelity? The short answer to the first-fidelity to the Constitution-poses a further question: What is the Constitution? For example, does the Fourteenth Amendment embody abstract moral principles or enact relatively concrete historical rules? And does the Constitution presuppose a political theory of majoritarian democracy or one of constitutional democracy? The short answer to the second-being faithful to the Constitution in interpreting it-leads to another question: How should the Constitution be interpreted?' Does …
Neutral Principles: A Retrospective, Barry Friedman
Neutral Principles: A Retrospective, Barry Friedman
Vanderbilt Law Review
Once upon a time, Enlightenment ideals prevailed across the land. Neutrality, objectivity, and reason were accepted as the firmaments of Supreme Court decisionmaking. "Americans tend[ed] to believe that 'playing fair' [meant] making everyone play by the same rules, and any deviation from this definition [was] immediately suspect."' But "then, some scholars.., abandoned the fundamental aspiration toward. . . neutrality in government." "Neutrality" came to be "considered a chimera, an illusion used by those in power to justify and perpetuate existing hierarchies." The nation was threatened with a return to pre-Enlightenment days, a "return to a world in which it matters …
Democracy, Kulturkampf, And The Apartheid Of The Closet, William N. Eskridge, Jr.
Democracy, Kulturkampf, And The Apartheid Of The Closet, William N. Eskridge, Jr.
Vanderbilt Law Review
In the generation after World War 2 (1945-69), homosexual intimacy was a serious crime in Colorado and other states, as was any kind of "lewdness" or homosexual solicitation; people suspected of being homosexual were routinely dismissed from federal, state, and private employment.' In the generation after Stonewall (1969-97), Colorado's legislature repealed the state's consensual sodomy law, and the governor by executive order prohibited state employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The cities of Aspen, Boulder, and Denver enacted ordinances prohibiting private sexual orientation discrimination in housing, employment, education, public accommodations, and health and welfare services. In 1992, the …
Cascade Artmap: Integrating Neural Computation And Symbolic Knowledge Processing, Ah-Hwee Tan
Cascade Artmap: Integrating Neural Computation And Symbolic Knowledge Processing, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper introduces a hybrid system termed cascade adaptive resonance theory mapping (ARTMAP) that incorporates symbolic knowledge into neural-network learning and recognition. Cascade ARTMAP, a generalization of fuzzy ARTMAP, represents intermediate attributes and rule cascades of rule-based knowledge explicitly and performs multistep inferencing. A rule insertion algorithm translates if-then symbolic rules into cascade ARTMAP architecture. Besides that initializing networks with prior knowledge can improve predictive accuracy and learning efficiency, the inserted symbolic knowledge can be refined and enhanced by the cascade ARTMAP learning algorithm. By preserving symbolic rule form during learning, the rules extracted from cascade ARTMAP can be compared …
