Conditioned Response To Ethanol As Indicated By Spontaneous Motor Activity, Tevfik Alici
Conditioned Response To Ethanol As Indicated By Spontaneous Motor Activity, Tevfik Alici
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
A group of rats were given 1.6 g/kg intraperitoneal (IP) injections of either saline or ethanol on 16 successive conditioning days (CD's). During each two-day period of the 16-day sequence, the rats received saline on one day in a specifically "saline-paired" environment and ethanol on the next day in an "ethanol-paired" environment. Visual, olfactory, auditory, and tactile manipulations were utilized to create these two different environments. In order to determine the conditioned response to ethanol, rats were given saline in "ethanol-paired" environments at the end of the 16-day sequence. SMA on this day was compared to that of the previous …

Public Choice And The Future Of Public-Choice-Influenced Legal Scholarship, David A. Skeel, Jr.
Public Choice And The Future Of Public-Choice-Influenced Legal Scholarship, David A. Skeel, Jr.
Vanderbilt Law Review
By many yardsticks, public choice is the single most successful transplant from the world of economics to legal scholarship., As with other law-and-economics scholarship, critics have attacked its assumptions, its methodology, and its conclusions. But nearly everyone concedes the power of at least some of the insights of public choice, and many of its terms, including "public choice" itself, have become common coinage in the legal literature, even among those who would never overtly rely on law-and-economics perspectives in their work.
Although both Maxwell Stearns's collection of readings and commentary, Public Choice and Public Law, and much of this Review …
Barthes’S Narrative Codes As A Technique For The Analysis Of Programmatic Music: An Analysis Of Janáček’S ‘The Fiddler’S Child.’, John K. Novak
Barthes’S Narrative Codes As A Technique For The Analysis Of Programmatic Music: An Analysis Of Janáček’S ‘The Fiddler’S Child.’, John K. Novak
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Barthes’s five narrative codes—hermeneutic, proairetic, semantic, symbolic, and referential—are applied to Leoš Janáček’s programmatic music to decode how musical elements, motives, and structures (speech-melody, folk influences) generate meaning. Novak uses the codes in a detailed analysis of Janáček’s orchestral poem The Fiddler’s Child. This framework analyzes affective associations, formal actions, and enigmas within his orchestral works. The hermeneutic code governs the proposal, sustaining, and resolution of musical “enigmas” or mysteries within the piece. The proairetic code focuses on the sequential actions of the music. The semantic code identifies specific musical motives and their connotative meanings. The symbolic code identifies deeper …

Using Distance Education To Teach The New Food Label To Extension Educators, Barbara Struempler, Suzette M. Jelinek, Amanda H. Brown, Laura G. Sanders
Using Distance Education To Teach The New Food Label To Extension Educators, Barbara Struempler, Suzette M. Jelinek, Amanda H. Brown, Laura G. Sanders
Journal of Extension
Purpose of this study was to determine the ability of Extension educators to increase their knowledge of the new food label through distance education. Instruction was provided via an Extension satellite program to 97 county agents and 67 female program assistants. The participants completed pre- and post-tests; responses were analyzed by Student's t test to determine change in knowledge about "Nutrition Facts." County agents' mean post-test score was significantly higher than the mean pre-test score. Program assistants scored lower than county agents, yet were knowledgeable about the food label with a significantly higher mean post-test score than pre-test score. This …
A Method Of Effective Communication Between 4-H And Ffa Programs At The Local Level, Kenneth Spoto
A Method Of Effective Communication Between 4-H And Ffa Programs At The Local Level, Kenneth Spoto
Journal of Extension
Effective communication goes beyond the meeting place. The junior livestock association is a method of effective communication among parents, leaders, FFA advisors, 4-H agents, and youth involved in parish (county) 4-H and FFA programs. Since the association in my parish organized thirteen years ago, monthly association meetings continue to be ideal situations where people with a common interest meet to discuss livestock management, share information on current show dates, and trends, offer assistance in feeding, grooming, or travel, learn about each other, and forge new friendships.
Expansion Of The Gaming Industry: Opportunities For Cooperative Extension, George W. Borden, Thomas R. Harris, Robert R. Fletcher
Expansion Of The Gaming Industry: Opportunities For Cooperative Extension, George W. Borden, Thomas R. Harris, Robert R. Fletcher
Journal of Extension
The phenomenal growth of legalized gaming over the last 10-to-15 years has generated a great deal of discussion at the national, state, and community levels. All but two states have some form of legalized gaming. In 1992, a national gaming survey conducted by the Center for Economic Development at the University of Nevada, Reno found that many states perceive legalized gaming as part of their economy. However, no formal Cooperative Extension educational programming is being conducted that addresses the wide array of issues surrounding legalized gaming. Is there an opportunity for Cooperative Extension to provide educational programming addressing issues specific …
Ohio Pasture For Profit Schools: Designing A Successful Format For Grazing Courses, Mark L. Bennett, Christopher D. Penrose, Henry M. Bartholomew
Ohio Pasture For Profit Schools: Designing A Successful Format For Grazing Courses, Mark L. Bennett, Christopher D. Penrose, Henry M. Bartholomew
Journal of Extension
Improved grazing systems offer a profitable sustainable alternative for livestock producers in Ohio. In 1994, Extension agents and state specialists formed an Integrated Forage Management Team and designed regional "Pasture for Profit Schools" for Ohio. Ten teaching outlines were developed that included text and scripts to present in a series of two to three classes. Notebooks and fact sheets were developed, and an on-farm case study would be provided. Twenty-five schools from 1994-96 have been attended by over 700 participants providing an instructor to student ratio of 1:15. Several states have requested the program for implementation.

Athetizing The Catharsis Clause In The Poetics, Gregory Scott
Athetizing The Catharsis Clause In The Poetics, Gregory Scott
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
I start with Aristotle’s theory of definition in order to claim that Aristotle could not reasonably have included the catharsis clause in the definition of tragedy on his own strictures. Moreover, in case we could solve this problem, I expose some very serious shortcomings that result in the Poetics itself, which are never or rarely acknowledged, if the catharsis clause is kept. Finally, given statements of Strabo and Plutarch, I suggest that the clause was probably a mistaken interpolation by an editor who repaired a damaged Aristotelian manuscript or who imagined that he was augmenting deficient Aristotelian doctrine. M.D. Petrusevski …

Analysis, Interpretation And Performance Of The Concerto For Violin And Orchestra By Samuel Barber, Elizabeth Ruth Flood
Analysis, Interpretation And Performance Of The Concerto For Violin And Orchestra By Samuel Barber, Elizabeth Ruth Flood
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
In the twentieth century there has been much diversity and multiplicity in the musical world. Tonal and rhythmic realms have been redefined by many composers, some who were concerned with preserving beauty in their aural landscapes and some who deemed it an inessential part of the musical experience. In this compositional sphere, Samuel Barber was a composer who continued the Romantic tradition handed down to him, while adding to it aspects of contemporary musical culture. In all of his writing, Barber's highest musical aim was expression of emotion, and the variety of compositional techniques he employed were used to serve …

Life Beneath Silk Walls: A Review Of The Primitively Social Embiidina, Janice Edgerly-Rooks
Biology
I review and summarize the scattered information on embiids (Order Embiidina), with an emphasis on details of colony structure and maternal care. I summarize experimental and observational field results from a detailed study on parental and communal behavior of Antipaluria urichi, a Trinidadian webspinner. Topics discussed include the function of maternal behavior, interactions with egg parasitoids, antipredator attributes of communal living, and possible functions of silk. I also compare features of webspinner sociality to other communal insects and spiders. In addition, I discuss promising topics for future study, including male dimorphism, the possibility of higher sociality, and communication systems.
