Carrion Seeking In Brown Tree Snakes: Importance Of Olfactory And Visual Cues, John A. Shivik, Larry Clark Apr 1997

Carrion Seeking In Brown Tree Snakes: Importance Of Olfactory And Visual Cues, John A. Shivik, Larry Clark

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We performed field experiments to examine brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis) attraction to carrion. These snakes were attracted to carrion and entered traps baited with dead mice as readily as traps baited with live mice. Using the cues arising from both live and dead prey, we examined the relative importance of visual and chemical cues to brown tree snakes. With carrion lures, chemical cues alone were sufficient for attracting and capturing snakes, but with live prey lures visual cues were required to attract and capture brown tree snakes. Our study presents the first experimental field evidence showing carrion …

A Guideline For The Preparation Of Species Descriptions In The Eimeriidae, Donald Duszynski, Patricia G. Wilber Apr 1997

A Guideline For The Preparation Of Species Descriptions In The Eimeriidae, Donald Duszynski, Patricia G. Wilber

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Members of the suborder Eimeriina (phylum Apicomplexa: class Sporozoea: order Eucoccidiorida) have complex 1 or 2 host life cycles that involve endogenous development in the tissues of vertebrates or invertebrates and exogenous development in an oocyst, usually outside the host(s). Because tissue stages are logistically difficult or even impossible to obtain in natural (wild) host-parasite systems, the vast majority (> 98%) of species in this parasite complex are known only from the structure of their sporulated oocyst. Unfortunately, the quality of these species descriptions is uneven because no guidelines are available for workers in the field to follow. Here we …

A New Coccidian From Acomys Cahirinus Desmarest, 1819, From Evolution Canyon, Lower Nahal Oren, Mount Carmel, Israel, Lee Couch, Leon Blaustein, Donald W. Duszynski, Georgy Shenbrot, Eviatar Nevo

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In 1994, fresh fecal samples were collected and examined for coccidian parasites from 43 spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus) and from 60 wood mice (Apodemus mystacinus). The 2 genera of rodents inhabit an area in Lower Nahal Oren, Mount Carmel, Israel, known as Evolution Canyon, which consists of opposite-facing slopes that are geologically identical, but micro-climatically very different. Acomys cahirinus is found primarily on the warmer and drier south-facing slope (SFS), whereas A. mystacinus primarily inhabits the cooler and wetter north-facing slope (NFS). None of the samples from the A. mystacinus contained coccidia, but 6 of 43 …

Making An English Bestiary: An Examination Of The Tradition And A Modern Experience Of The Technical Aspects Of Production, Pamela S. Rups Apr 1997

Making An English Bestiary: An Examination Of The Tradition And A Modern Experience Of The Technical Aspects Of Production, Pamela S. Rups

Masters Theses

My thesis involves the compilation of information on the physical characteristics and production methods of English Bestiaries in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries as well as the actual production of my own Bestiary. Working with microfilm copies of six manuscripts, color slides and illustrations, and color reproductions of the miniatures of a seventh, I will examine and compare briefly the images, paleography and sources for the purpose of analyzing aspects of production.

Along with this written analysis I am producing my own Bestiary using authentic materials and methods as much as possible. I am limiting my own manuscript …

Regulating Patent Holders: Local Working Requirements And Compulsory Licences At International Law, Michael Halewood Apr 1997

Regulating Patent Holders: Local Working Requirements And Compulsory Licences At International Law, Michael Halewood

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

For decades, industry lobbyists and governments have been mounting pressure on other countries to offer stronger protection for foreign owned intellectual property. This paper seeks to sow dissent among those who feel that the NAFTA and TRIPS agreements represent the triumph of strong intellectual property rights over domestic policy-making alternatives. Focusing on patent law, in particular, this article argues that there are a wide range of policy options open to patent granting countries which both circumscribe patent holder's rights and comply with TRIPS and NAFTA. More specifically, the author argues that TRIPS and NAFTA signatories continue to enjoy relatively broad …

Kanpo Consumption Among Japanese Students At Western Michigan University: Case Studies In Medical Pluralism, Joseph Paul Siuda Apr 1997

Kanpo Consumption Among Japanese Students At Western Michigan University: Case Studies In Medical Pluralism, Joseph Paul Siuda

Masters Theses

Many societies have pluralistic medical systems in which biomedicine and alternative therapies coexist. Some anthropologists view medical pluralism adaptively, where the strengths of various therapies complement each other. Others highlight the hegemonic power of biomedicine and its tendency to suppress or co-opt alternative therapies. To understand medical pluralism, one must examine alternative therapies in particular cultural contexts.

Kanpo, or Japanese herbalism, has survived political and legal suppression resulting from Japan's 19th century attempts at westernization and now poses a challenge to the biomedical model of health and illness. Since the 1970's more Japanese are turning to kanpo rather than …

Aboriginal Autonomy: The Future Of Indigenous Development In Western Australia, Matthew B. Eugster Apr 1997

Aboriginal Autonomy: The Future Of Indigenous Development In Western Australia, Matthew B. Eugster

Masters Theses

The prospects for development within the Aboriginal society of Western Australia were the focus of this study. The Primary intent of the study was to examine the causes behind an apparent lack of development within Aboriginal society. Next, the study examined possible remedies for the situation.

The study determined that the lack of development in Aboriginal society can be attributed primarily to social dysfunction ( or social dislocation). Furthermore, social dislocation could be attributed to cultural deprivation or the inability to practice one's culture. It was proposed and established that cultural and political autonomy would provide an environment more suitable …

Popular Music In A Transnational World: The Construction Of Local Identities In Singapore, Lily Kong Apr 1997

Popular Music In A Transnational World: The Construction Of Local Identities In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

As an area of geographical inquiry, popular music has not been explored to any large extent. Where writings exist, they have been somewhat divorced from recent theoretical and methodological questions that have rejuvenated social and cultural geography. In this paper, I focus on one arena which geographers can develop in their analysis of popular music, namely, the exploration of local influences and global forces in the production of music. In so doing, I wish to explore how local resources intersect with global ones in a process of transculturation. Using the example of English songs by one particular songwriter and artiste …

Reading The Wreckage: De-Encrypting Eliot's Aesthetics Of Empire, Paul Douglass Apr 1997

Reading The Wreckage: De-Encrypting Eliot's Aesthetics Of Empire, Paul Douglass

Faculty Publications, English and Comparative Literature

The writer examines an aesthetics of empire evident in Eliot's The Waste Land. He contends that though this work's formal innovations appear “revolutionary,” its aesthetics fit into modernism's reactionary character and reflect the cultural politics of the British conservatism that Eliot had adopted. In decoding the poem's fragments and allusions, he illustrates Eliot's preoccupation with empire. He also shows how The Waste Land may be seen as part of a British literary tradition of “reading the wreckage” that goes back at least to Edward Volney's Ruins (1791).

"Monologue" is about feelings. It's a mystical thing, without us realizing it, there is always something hidden behind a scene. So, in "Monologue", I am trying to reveal what is hidden in one's emotion, through images with text disturbance and inner voices.

Begging The Earth's Forgiveness: Russian Folklore In The Novels Of F. M. Dostoevsky, Wendy Kristine Chia-Klesch Apr 1997

Begging The Earth's Forgiveness: Russian Folklore In The Novels Of F. M. Dostoevsky, Wendy Kristine Chia-Klesch

English Theses & Dissertations

The pervading theme of Dostoevsky's novels is humanity's need to discover meaning in the natural world and in human experience. For generations, the Russian peasantry created myths and folk tales in order to understand the workings of Damp Mother Earth and to endow the earth and their lives with meaning. By the nineteenth century, however, the principles of Western materialism, which Dostoevsky likened to "intelligent bacteria," began to drift across the border and infect the Russian intelligentsia. These new Westernizers devoted themselves to dismantling existing religious and folk traditions and replacing them with a modern sign system based on science …

The Map The Body Makes, Timothy Carl Richardson Apr 1997

The Map The Body Makes, Timothy Carl Richardson

English Theses & Dissertations

Herein is a collection of poems each having something to do with how and/or why we figure our bodies in relation to the Space we tend to call the World, History, or Family. The first section, entitled "Settlement," deals primarily with the idea of orienting ourselves in terms of family in its loosest sense. The second section, "Generation," questions the relation of space and family in terms of the Bible's Old Testament. The penultimate section, ''Landscape," considers the body as physical presence in a space which by definition should be alien to it. "The Naming," the final section of the …

Ecology Of The Early Life History Of The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus: Recruitment, Predation, And Habitat Requirements, Charles A. Acosta Apr 1997

Ecology Of The Early Life History Of The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus: Recruitment, Predation, And Habitat Requirements, Charles A. Acosta

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Recruitment variability of the early life history stages of marine benthic organisms can have profound consequences on population dynamics. I studied factors affecting recruitment success of postlarvae and early juveniles of the Caribbean spiny lobster. I examined patterns in postlarval supply, investigated wind forcing as a potential transport mechanism for recruiting postlarvae, and quantified predation on postlarvae in south Florida, USA. In an eight-year time series, spiny lobster postlarval supply occurred year-round between the new and first quarter lunar phases. The major annual peak occurred around March corresponding to spawning activity ten months earlier, and a smaller non-seasonal peak occurred …

Out Of The Familiar Graces: A Book Of Poems, Ronald Clark Brooks Jr. Apr 1997

Out Of The Familiar Graces: A Book Of Poems, Ronald Clark Brooks Jr.

English Theses & Dissertations

If I have done my job, the problems which are outlined in this book of poems will resist the type of abstraction required in this space. After all, the first problem any poet must engage is how to navigate the necessary fluctuations between abstract statements and concrete images. For this book, there are two conflicting desires which are always in flux: the desire for a world of things and the desire for a world of ideas. So it could be said that the poems in this book are problems themselves, generated by the larger problem inherent in trying to map …

Galaxie, Sarah Ann Livingston Apr 1997

Galaxie, Sarah Ann Livingston

English Theses & Dissertations

This collection of poems primarily features play of language, image, and voice. A postmodern juxtaposition of ancient figures and contemporary ideas, as well as a blurring of the line between autobiography and fiction, revises familiar stories. My goal is to seek what is surprising, daring-a strength of voice combining with a sometimes casual tone which hints towards deeper circumstances. Most specifically, my work exists within a fictional landscape which allows the creation of "a safe space." The gesture of the poem stops everything, commentates on what is suspended and the suspension itself.

The Nautical Quest, Bradford S. Warner Apr 1997

The Nautical Quest, Bradford S. Warner

English Theses & Dissertations

Despite crossing genres and continents, strong literary connections exist between Coleridge's poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." Poe's novella The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, and Melville's novel Moby Dick or the Whale. The works are similar in terms of plot, symbolism, and other artistic devices. Ties between any two of the works have been mentioned in literary scholarship over the last century, yet I have located none involving all three.

None of the present criticism has revealed that each work utilizes several important literary devices, such as a quality of incorporation of source material (including travel …
