Growth Patterns Of Juvenile Sockeye Salmon In Different Thermal Environments Of Alaskan Lakes, Jim A. Edmundson
Growth Patterns Of Juvenile Sockeye Salmon In Different Thermal Environments Of Alaskan Lakes, Jim A. Edmundson
Fisheries
Rearing conditions imposed on juvenile salmonids in lakes are important determinants of freshwater growth patterns. In Alaska, sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) nursery lakes exhibit a wide range in thermal characteristics. Compared to clear lakes, stained lakes are warmer and have longer growing seasons, whereas glacial lakes are colder and have shorter growing seasons. In stained lakes, a shallow thermocline restricts most of the heat to the surface layers. Deep mixing in glacial lakes, concomitant with meltwater intrusion, keep much of the water column near 4 °C. Mean depth accounts for 77% of the among-lake variation in the seasonal average water …

Electro-Deposition Of Polymer Chains On An Adsorbing Wall: Density Profiles And Wall Coverage, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey
Electro-Deposition Of Polymer Chains On An Adsorbing Wall: Density Profiles And Wall Coverage, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey
Faculty Publications
Growth of polymer density in an electro-deposition model of polymer chains on an impenetrable wall is studied on a two dimensional discrete lattice using a Monte Carlo simulation. Polymer-polymer repulsion and polymer-wall attraction for the adsorbing wall (along with the neutral and repulsive interactions) are considered in an external field. Effects of the field strength (B), temperature (T), and chain length (L-c) on the density profile of the polymer chains and wall coverage are investigated. The spatial density profile shows onset of oscillation near the wall at a characteristic field (B-c) which depends on chain length and temperature, In low …

Faculty Scholarship
The primary objectives were: 1) to collect marine invertebrates and algae for discovery of novel compounds with therapeutic potential; 2) to document the biodiversity of the deep-water and shallow-water benthic communities with videotapes, 35-mm photographs, and taxonomic museum specimens using the JOHNSONSEA-LINK II (JSL) Research Submersible and scuba; 3) to isolate microorganisms from macroinvertebrate and sediment samples; and 4) to procure specimens of sponges for cell culture studies. A total of 72 collection sites (31 submersible and 41 scuba/snorkel dive sites) were studied during 17 operation days. The expedition resulted in the collection of 567 samples of benthic macroinvertebrates and …

Crystal Structure Of The Adenylyl Cyclase Activator G(Sα), Roger K. Sunahara, John J.G. Tesmer, Alfred G. Gilman, Stephen R. Sprang
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The crystal structure of G(sα), the heterotrimeric G protein α subunit that stimulates adenylyl cyclase, was determined at 2.5 Å in a complex with guanosine 5'-O-(3-thio-triphosphate) (GTPγS). G(sα) is the prototypic member of a of GTP-binding proteins that regulate the activities of effectors in a hormone-dependent manner. Comparison of the structure of G(sα)·GTPγS with that of G(iα)·GTPγS suggest that their effector specificity is primarily dictated by the shape of the binding surface formed by the switch II helix and the α3-β5 loop, despite the high sequence homology of these elements. In contrast, sequence divergence explains the inability of regulators of …

The Temperature Dependent Modification Of The Ca2+ Release Mechanism Of Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Shawn Patrick Mullen
The Temperature Dependent Modification Of The Ca2+ Release Mechanism Of Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Shawn Patrick Mullen
Dissertations and Theses
The Ca2+ release protein/ryanodine receptor from skeletal muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum is shown to be modulated in a unique manner by small changes in temperature. Thiol oxidants and reducing agents modify channel function in a biphasic manner at 40° C, while at 34° C the channel exhibits only a monophasic behavior. Elevated temperature appears to expose a second set of reactive groups that, when either oxidized or reduced, alter function. Previous studies have focused on the properties of the release mechanism at or below 37° C. This study shows that at 40° C, which more reflects the body temperature of …
Intracellular Lipid-Binding Proteins And Their Genes, David A. Bernlohr, Melanie A. Simpson, Ann Vogel Hertzel, Leonard J. Banaszak
Intracellular Lipid-Binding Proteins And Their Genes, David A. Bernlohr, Melanie A. Simpson, Ann Vogel Hertzel, Leonard J. Banaszak
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Intracellular lipid-binding proteins are a family of low-molecularweight single-chain polypeptides that form 1:1 complexes with fatty acids, retinoids, or other hydrophobic ligands. These proteins are products of a large multigene family of unlinked loci distributed throughout the genome. Each lipid-binding protein exhibits a distinctive pattern of tissue distribution. Transcriptional control, regulated by a combination of peroxisome proliferator activated receptors and CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins, allows for a variety of both cell and tissue-specific expression patterns. In some cells, fatty acids increase the expression of the lipid-binding protein genes. Fatty acids, or their metabolites, are activators of the peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor family of …
