Social And Demographic Influences On Environmental Attitudes, Marybe Mcmillan, Thomas J. Hoban, William B. Clifford, Margaret R. Brant

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Sociologists have studied environmental attitudes for over two decades. Much of this research has sought to determine what factors are related to these attitudes. Past research has shown that certain social and demographic variables tend to have a positive influence on environmentalism. One of the more valid and reliable indicators of environmentalism is the 12-item attitude scale known as the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP). That scale has been shown to consist of three sub-scales. This paper extends previous research by examining the relative influence of six independent variables (age, gender, race, education, income, and residence) on each of the sub-scales …

An Action Plan To Address The Protection Of Marine Environment From Risks Posed By Land-Based And Marine Activities In Maputo Bay, Nicolau Augusto Banze

World Maritime University Dissertations

The marine environment is an essential part of the global biosphere, the oceans cover almost the fourths of the earth’s surface, contain over the 90 per cent of the world’s water resources, and are home to many forms of marine life. The oceans are also environmentally susceptible to natural and human-related activities, such as climatic changes, sea level rise, dredge and fill activities, charmelisation, sedimentation, sewage discharges and shoreline development, among many others. therefore there is an urgent need for immediate action, to stop further destruction of the marine environment caused by offshore and land based activities. Nigerian Maritime Administration : Its Role In Marine Environmental Protection : A Case Study On The Escravos Oil Terminal, Niger Delta, Mudi I. Isa

World Maritime University Dissertations

The dissertation is an attempt to examine the Nigerian oil industry and its impact on the environment. The world pre occupation in recent years, with green house gas emission and climatic changes has tended to over shadow an equally important problem, oil pollution either land based or marine. Oil spills have an equally devastating impact on the environment, especially in developing countries which have little or no capacity to deal with this problem. Thus the focal point of this paper is to analyse the Nigerian oil sector and the environmental impact of its activities. This involves identifying sectors within the …

Protection Of Bangladesh Waters Against Accidental Oil Pollution From Ships, Khondaker Md. Asaduzzaman

World Maritime University Dissertations

Bangladesh, as being a flag, coastal and port state, has a genuine concern about the threat of oil pollution from marine transportation in its waters. However, her concern for accidental oil pollution from ships is not adequately matched by appropriate preventive and remedial measures. As a result, the country continues to be in an absolutely vulnerable position with respect to the dangers of oil pollution. This dissertation is a study of the need for and the ways of protecting the marine environment of Bangladesh from oil pollution incidents. The threats of accidental spills in Bangladesh waters are discussed and the …

Second Cause In Posterior Analytics Ii.11, Evelyn Barker Dec 1997

Second Cause In Posterior Analytics Ii.11, Evelyn Barker

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

I contend that the second cause of Posterior Analytics II.11 expresses Aristotle's doctrine of material cause as hypothetical necessity in Physics II. Aristotle presents two formulations of the second cause in Posterior Analytics II. 11, which he "clearly" means to be equivalent. These two formulations of the second cause, taken literally without reference to the definition of the syllogism, fit Aristotle's description of a material cause being "hypothetical necessity" in Physics II - that is, a necessary means to produce a goal. In Physics II.9 Aristotle's thesis that an elementary mathematical definition is a "hypothetical necessity" for the proof of …
