Paleoecology And Ecomorphology Of The Giant Short-Faced Bear In Eastern Beringia, Paul Edward Matheus
Paleoecology And Ecomorphology Of The Giant Short-Faced Bear In Eastern Beringia, Paul Edward Matheus
Biological Sciences
The short-faced bear (Arctodus simus) was a widespread Tremarctine bear indigenous to North America until its extinction around 11,500 BP. Arctodus inhabited Pleistocene ice-free refugia in Eastern Beringia (the northwestern limit of its range) until at least 20,000 BP. Because of its gracile, long-legged build and extremely large size, most paleontologists believe this bear was a high-speed pursuit predator which had preyed on the largest herbivores of Pleistocene North America. Alternatively, energetic arguments have been used to suggest that Arctodus was too large to be carnivorous and evolved its large size within an herbivorous or omnivorous niche. To test these …

Distant Vistas: Bradford Washburn, Expeditionary Science And Landscape, 1930-1960, Michael P. Sfraga
Distant Vistas: Bradford Washburn, Expeditionary Science And Landscape, 1930-1960, Michael P. Sfraga
Geosciences
Bradford Washburn is primarily known for his Alaskan mountaineering accomplishments and mountain photography. Between 1930 and 1960, Washburn led 19 expeditions to Alaska and Canada's Yukon Territory on which he surveyed, photographed and mapped some of the last unexplored mountain regions in North America. This study, however, analyzes Washburn's lesser known role in directing interdisciplinary field research involving high altitude physics, glaciology, cartography and geology, which he accomplished by linking such disparate entities as the motion picture industry, geographic organizations, the U.S. military, and prominent U.S. scientists. Washburn's career can be viewed as an intersection of nineteenth and twentieth century …

Value Based Marketing For Fed Cattle: A Discussion Of The Issues, Scott Fausti, Steve Schamber, Dwight Adamson
Value Based Marketing For Fed Cattle: A Discussion Of The Issues, Scott Fausti, Steve Schamber, Dwight Adamson
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Beef demand in the United States began to weaken relative to the demand for pork and poultry in the 1970s. The literature offers two possible explanations: 1) the lifestyles explanation; and 2) the relative-price explanation. Barkema and Drabenstott (1990) review the literature concerning the market share issue and concisely outline the two possible explanations: "The lifestyle argument suggests that consumers chose to eat less beef due to health concerns and changes in lifestyles. The relative-prices explanation suggests consumers switched from beef to poultry because beef became relatively more expensive than poultry." The issue of improving beefs competitiveness against other domestic …
