Disturbance History In The Tanana River Basin Of Alaska: Management Implications, James S. Roessler Apr 1997

Disturbance History In The Tanana River Basin Of Alaska: Management Implications, James S. Roessler

Theses (Unassigned)

The forests of Tanana River Basin in Interior Alaska have a history of disturbance. Four issues reflecting forest disturbance, important to include in current management strategies for these lands, were researched: (1) disturbance history of the Tanana Valley; (2) Alaska Interagency Fire Management Plan: a case study; (3) prescribed natural fire in Alaska: possibilities and complexities; and (4) past use of prescribed fire in white spruce: a summary with particular reference to Alaska. Through researching historical archives, conducting field visits, interviewing land and fire managers and reviewing current planning documents, I reached four major conclusions: (1) there is lack of …

Regulation Of Methyl Farnesoate Production By The Lobster Mandibular Organ In Vitro, Amy Shaub '97 Apr 1997

Regulation Of Methyl Farnesoate Production By The Lobster Mandibular Organ In Vitro, Amy Shaub '97

Honors Projects

Methyl farnesoate (MF) is a crustacean compound that is structurally similar to juvenile hormone, a substance that regulates insect growth and reproduction. This similarity has led to the suggestion that MF may have juvenile hormone-like effects in crustaceans. If this is so, regulation of MF levels might be an important mechanism in the control of crustacean molting and reproduction. The understanding of, and ability to manipulate, the regulation of MF production could be a powerful tool in the aquaculture of economically Important crustaceans.

In the lobster Homarus americanus, MF synthesis occurs in the mandibular organ (MO). In vivo studies have …

Vernacular Images Of The Svalbard Archipelago, 1596 To 1996, Tone Benedicte Deehr Apr 1997

Vernacular Images Of The Svalbard Archipelago, 1596 To 1996, Tone Benedicte Deehr

Theses (Unassigned)

Drama has always been part of Svalbard's vernacular or everyday images. Drama was central to the serialized whaling prints produced in the Dutch and English printing shops by the seventeenth and eighteenth century's graphic artists, who themselves might not have set foot in the Arctic. These prints soon gained increasing popularity in illiterate Europe. Svalbard's resources, adventure, and exploitation became public knowledge. New names began filling empty spaces on the map prompted by science and exploration. The navigator's and cartographer's coastal sketches were slowly replaced by more elaborate landscape compositions with halftones and perspective. During the nineteenth century, professional artists …

Late Quaternary Vegetation And Lake Level Changes In Central Alaska, Nancy Horner Bigelow Apr 1997

Late Quaternary Vegetation And Lake Level Changes In Central Alaska, Nancy Horner Bigelow

Theses (Unassigned)

The threat of significant high-latitude global warming over the next 50 years requires that we assess the response of vegetation to climate change. One approach is to see how plants have reacted to past climate change. In this study high-resolution reconstructions of past vegetation and climate, based on pollen and lake level changes, provide useful insights into vegetation and climate change in central Alaska since 14,000 years ago. Climate changed substantially at about 12,000 years ago, between 11,000 and 10,000 years ago, and about 8,000 years ago. At 12,000 years ago, a significant transition is reflected by the appearance of …

Extent, Timing, And Paleogeographic Significance Of Multiple Pleistocene Glaciations In The Bering Strait Region, Patricia Anne Heiser Apr 1997

Extent, Timing, And Paleogeographic Significance Of Multiple Pleistocene Glaciations In The Bering Strait Region, Patricia Anne Heiser

Theses (Unassigned)

This study utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to the investigation of the extent, timing, and potential effects of repeated Pleistocene glaciation in Bering Strait region. A major focus of this study was directed toward testing the hypothesis that a continental-scale ice sheet existed in Beringia during the Late Wisconsin glacial period. Satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery was used to compile a map of glacial moraines in Chukotka, Russia, and to attempt preliminary correlations with the glacial record in Alaska. Geophysical modelling of the solid-earth response to postulated glacial loading, and the reconstruction of regional snowline were combined with the results …

Natural Disturbance At The Site And Landscape Levels In Temperate Rainforests Of Southeast Alaska, Robert A. Ott Apr 1997

Natural Disturbance At The Site And Landscape Levels In Temperate Rainforests Of Southeast Alaska, Robert A. Ott

Theses (Unassigned)

Wind disturbance in forests of southeast Alaska is poorly understood. Dynamics of canopy gaps, formed primarily by wind, were investigated in the western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla)/blueberry (Vaccinium spp.)/shield fern (Dryopteris austriaca) plant association in northern southeast Alaska; twenty gaps were sampled at each of 3 sites. Gaps comprised about 9% of the forest area. The majority of gaps were $<$50 m$\sp2$ in area, had a diameter-to-height (D/H) $<$0.50, were created from the death of 1 or 2 gapmakers, and had experienced gap expansion. Emulating the small-scale natural disturbance regime would be best achieved if single tree selection and small group selection cuts were administered within a stand. Diffuse light levels were greatest and most variable at both the shrub and herb layers in canopy gaps, and lowest and least variable under closed canopy forest. Shrub layer light levels were positively associated with mean and median canopy gap areas. Herb layer light levels, however, were determined by the amount of light interception at the shrub layer and not by canopy gap size. Most species were robust in terms of their light requirements compared to the range of light conditions present in the understory. Sorenson Index values indicated that gaps and closed canopy forest generally were very similar in species composition. Seedling heights suggest that western hemlock and Sitka spruce seedlings benefit from the presence of canopy gaps. However, the ability of Sitka spruce to maintain itself through gap-phase replacement is limited. Techniques are needed that allow forest managers to interpret wind patterns in remote locations, at both site- and landscape-levels, and across complex topography. I demonstrated the use of circular data analysis of treefall directions as a technique to investigate wind flows at the site-level. I also demonstrated the feasibility of mapping wind flows across a large landscape of complex terrain in southeast Alaska using flagged trees, treefall directions of large-scale natural blowdowns, and treefall directions of blowdowns associated with clearcuts.

Investigations Of Health Status And Body Condition Of Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) In The Gulf Of Alaska, Brian Scott Fadely Apr 1997

Investigations Of Health Status And Body Condition Of Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) In The Gulf Of Alaska, Brian Scott Fadely

Marine Biology

Harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) declines during the past 20 years in the Kodiak Island and Prince William Sound regions contrast with stable or slightly increasing populations in southeastern areas of Alaska. Aspects of health status and body condition were investigated to test the hypothesis that these declines were driven by nutritional limitation, and to determine whether recent differential population trajectories among Kodiak Island, Prince William Sound, and southeast Alaska could have health-related components. For comparisons between 1992-96, three aspects of health status were examined; blood chemistry, blubber distribution and quantity; and blubber quality. Clinical ranges of plasma chemistries and hematologies …

The Development Of Diving Behavior And Physiology In Juvenile Weddell Seals (Leptonychotes Weddellii) In Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica, Jennifer Moss Burns Apr 1997

The Development Of Diving Behavior And Physiology In Juvenile Weddell Seals (Leptonychotes Weddellii) In Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica, Jennifer Moss Burns

Marine Biology

The development of diving behavior and physiology in juvenile Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica was studied in order to determine the effects of age, body size, and condition on diving ability. During the austral summers of 1992, 1993, and 1994, the diving behavior of 39 pups and 15 yearlings was monitored using time depth recorders (TDRs). In addition, 26 pups were equipped with satellite-linked time depth recorders (SLTDRs) to track fall and winter diving behavior. Blood samples and morphological measurements were taken at each handling. Pups began to dive within two weeks of birth, and the mean …

Physiology Of The Endocrine, Cardiorespiratory And Nervous Systems In Pinnipeds: Integrative Approach And Biomedical Considerations, Tania Zenteno-Savin Apr 1997

Physiology Of The Endocrine, Cardiorespiratory And Nervous Systems In Pinnipeds: Integrative Approach And Biomedical Considerations, Tania Zenteno-Savin

Marine Biology

This thesis explored several aspects of the hormonal and cardiovascular physiology in pinnipeds (seals and sea lions). Plasma concentrations of the vasoactive hormones angiotensin II (Ang II), arginine vasopressin (AVP, the antidiuretic hormone) and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) were studied in six species of seals and sea lions. Resting levels of AVP, ANP and Ang II in these pinnipeds were similar to those reported for other vertebrate species, including humans. Age-related differences were found in the concentrations of these hormones in seals and sea lions. Geographic differences in hormone concentrations were found in Steller sea lions and harbor seals. To …

Integrating Technology Into The Library Curriculum Of Grades Four Through Eight For The Lower Alloways Creek Elementary School, Deborah A. Wesolek

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a library curriculum guide for grades four through eight for the Lower Alloways Creek Elementary School, Salem, New Jersey.

Prior to this guide, the library curriculum for Lower Alloways Creek Elementary School consisted of an outdated skills array. It no longer met the needs of the students or the staff of the school. With the addition of an automated circulation and catalog system, as well as CD-ROM, and the Internet, it became clear that the curriculum must be redeveloped, revised and thoroughly updated to include these new technologies. This will assist in …

Neural Control Of Singing In The Dark-Eyed Junco (Junco Hyemalis), Cynthia Corbitt Gulledge Apr 1997

Neural Control Of Singing In The Dark-Eyed Junco (Junco Hyemalis), Cynthia Corbitt Gulledge

Biological Sciences

This dissertation includes several discrete projects addressing various aspects of the neural control of singing in the Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), a migratory songbird. I collected the birds from a local wild population during the breeding season and migration. Chapter 2 addresses the role of testosterone in controlling volumes of the brain regions that control song learning and song production (vocal control regions, VCRs), which grow and shrink seasonally and are correlated with changes in singing behavior. I found that: the role testosterone plays may depend on the age of the bird and the brain region in question. Expanding on …

Physiological Adaptations For Overwintering By The Black-Capped Chickadee (Parus Atricapillus) In Interior Alaska (64 Degrees North Latitude), Susan Marie Sharbaugh Apr 1997

Physiological Adaptations For Overwintering By The Black-Capped Chickadee (Parus Atricapillus) In Interior Alaska (64 Degrees North Latitude), Susan Marie Sharbaugh

Biological Sciences

Winter in interior Alaska (64$\sp\circ$N) is characterized by short photoperiod (LD 5:19) and chronic subfreezing temperatures. These conditions present a physiological challenge to overwintering animals. This challenge increases as body size decreases. In small animals, higher surface to volume ratio and concomitant higher mass-specific metabolic rate (compared to larger animals) vastly increase energetic demand. This thesis focuses on the physiological adaptations of the smallest (12 g) overwintering bird in interior Alaska, the Black-capped Chickadee (Parus atricapillus). To determine if seasonal acclimatization of Black-capped Chickadees at high latitude differs from that of conspecifics at lower latitudes, standard metabolic rates (SMR), metabolic …
