Community In Liberal Thought, Richard C. Brill
Community In Liberal Thought, Richard C. Brill
Masters Theses
The aim of this thesis is to research the role of community in liberal thought. The problem that has initiated this research is the erosion of traditional communal bonds in contemporary liberal society. This problem has been the focus of the debate between communitarians and liberals for the past two decades. The research problem will be to discover workable definitions of community and liberalism which have been plagued with multiple interpretations throughout the debate.
The method of this thesis will be to first frame in the environment of the original problem. The second chapter will address the precedents set by …
The Role Of (Alpha)S1-Casein In The Formation Of The Casein Micelle, Chinchi Chen
The Role Of (Alpha)S1-Casein In The Formation Of The Casein Micelle, Chinchi Chen
Theses
Caseins are the major protein components of milk. Bovine caseins have been the most thoroughly studied and serve as the principal area of research for the dairy industry. Bovine caseins are composed of several major polypeptide families, (alpha)s1-, (alpha)s1-, (beta)- and K-caseins. The (alpha)s1-caseins constitute 30.6% of bovine milk protein. The distribution of polar and apolar amino acids within each (alpha)s1 -casein molecule tends to be asymmetric, yielding protein molecules with hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains that give the caseins excellent functional properties. Moreover, the phosphoserine groups of (alpha)s1 -casein associate with calcium phosphate complexes in milk to form loosely ordered …
Extraction Of Premafloxacin Radiolabeled With Carbon Fourteen From Loam Soil, Steven Gregory Staskiewicz
Extraction Of Premafloxacin Radiolabeled With Carbon Fourteen From Loam Soil, Steven Gregory Staskiewicz
Masters Theses
Premafloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic being developed by Pharmacia & Upjohn for veterinary indications. Since the parent drug and possibly metabolites will be applied to soil through the deposition of animal excreta, many regulatory agencies will require environmental assessment testing. In order to determine if 14C-premafloxacin would biodegrade in the soil, loam soil was extracted with solvents and C18 solid phase columns were used to isolate the compound after three weeks of incubation. In addition to extracting the soil, production of 14CO2 was monitored by trapping the degradation by-product in 2 N NaOH. Liquid scintillation counting of …
The Development And Validation Of A Multicomponent Scale Measuring Aids Phobia, Jessica Purtan Harrell
The Development And Validation Of A Multicomponent Scale Measuring Aids Phobia, Jessica Purtan Harrell
Masters Theses
The development, reliability, and validity of a new instrument, the Multicomponent AIDS Phobia Scale (MAPS), is described. The results indicate that the MAPS has strong internal consistency and moderate test-retest reliability. In addition, an assessment of concurrent and discriminant validity indicates statistically significant correlations with other self-report measures of anxiety, hypochondriasis, obsessive compulsive disorder, and fear of AIDS. The results of a factor analysis indicate that the scale consists of 2 factors: fear of infection and fear of others/avoidance. The instrument appears to be a reliable and valid measure of AIDS Phobia and may prove useful for improving clinical assessment …
Age, Status And Gender: Mortality Patterns And Mortuary Practice At Umm El-Jimal, Jordan, Melissa Cheyney
Age, Status And Gender: Mortality Patterns And Mortuary Practice At Umm El-Jimal, Jordan, Melissa Cheyney
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study is to identify trends in both burial practice and mortality patterning at the Late Antique site of Umm el-Jimal in northern Jordan, through a combined emphasis on mortuary contexts and human skeletal evidence. Data were analyzed and interpreted in three main areas involving: ( 1) the demographic evaluation of biological profiles comprised of sex, age and pathology estimations; (2) life table calculations for crude mortality rates, life expectancies, probability of death and number of individuals dying in time-successive age intervals; and (3) sex-, age- and status-specific patterns in demography and burial structure. These evaluations were …

Biology Faculty Research
The GAGA transcription factor of Drosophila melanogaster is ubiquitous and plays multiple roles. Characterization of cDNA clones and detection by domain- specific antibodies has revealed that the 70-90 kDa major GAGA species are encoded by two open reading frames producing GAGA factor proteins of 519 amino acids (GAGA-519) and 581 amino acids (GAGA-581), which share a common N-terminal region that is linked to two different glutamine-rich C-termini. Purified recombinant GAGA-519 and GAGA-581 proteins can form homomeric complexes that bind specifically to a single GAGA sequence in vitro. The two GAGA isoforms also function similarly in transient transactivation assays in tissue …
Response: Between Economics And Sociology: The New Path Of Deterrence, Dan M. Kahan
Response: Between Economics And Sociology: The New Path Of Deterrence, Dan M. Kahan
Michigan Law Review
The explosive collision of economics and sociology has long illuminated the landscape of deterrence theory. It is a debate as hopeless as it is spectacular. Economics is practical but thin. Starting from the simple premise that individuals rationally maximize their utility, economics generates a robust schedule of prescriptions - from the appropriate size of criminal penalties,1 to the optimal form of criminal punishments, to the most efficient mix of private and public investments in deterrence. Yet it is the very economy of economics that ultimately subverts it: its account of human motivations is too simplistic to be believable, and it …

Alternative Health Care Practices Of Patients Who Attend Nurse Practitioner Clinics In North Mississippi, Wesley Barrett
Alternative Health Care Practices Of Patients Who Attend Nurse Practitioner Clinics In North Mississippi, Wesley Barrett
MSN Research Projects
As many as one out of three Americans uses alternative health therapies. The purpose of this study was to describe the type and frequency of alternative health care practices and sociodemographics of patients in nurse practitioner clinics in North Mississippi in order to determine implications for nurse practitioners. Leininger's Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality served as the conceptual framework for this study. The researcher, using a descriptive study design, sought to answer the following questions: 1) What are the characteristics of patients who use alternative health care practices? 2) What types of alternative health care practices are being …

Masks, Davya Brody
Masks, Davya Brody
Theses
'Masks' is a body of work which explores the concept of mask in a variety of ways. Masks have been around since prehistoric times. Their use and development has a rich visual and cultural history, "masks' draws from this history both for inspiration and for direction. The other concept of mask investigated in this body of work, is mask-as-metaphor. The word "mask" does not simply mean an object which covers one's face. It also implies blocking something out, covering something up or hiding behind something. The mask of a building, body armor, the way we want things to be seen, …

Shorebird Predation On Benthic Macroinvertebrates In An Irrigation Reservoir, Janet R. Mihuc, Charles H. Trost, Timothy B. Mihuc
Shorebird Predation On Benthic Macroinvertebrates In An Irrigation Reservoir, Janet R. Mihuc, Charles H. Trost, Timothy B. Mihuc
Great Basin Naturalist
American Falls Reservoir in southeastern Idaho is an irrigation reservoir used as an inland feeding stopover by many shorebird species. Six exclosure experiments were conducted during the 1990 drawdown period to investigate shorebird predation impact on benthic macroinvertebrate populations. The study sites differed in sediment composition, sediment slope, invertebrate densities, and shorebird abundance. Shorebird predation significantly affected invertebrate densities in only 1 of 6 experiments (Aberdeen Mouth). This site had higher sediment slope and a lower water recedence than other study sites, resulting in concentration of shorebird predation on a small area of newly exposed sediment. Shorebird predation had the …
Lagomorphs And The Dispersal Of Seeds Into Communities Dominated By Exotic Annual Weeds, Eugene W. Schupp, Hoyt J. Heaton, José M. Gomez
Lagomorphs And The Dispersal Of Seeds Into Communities Dominated By Exotic Annual Weeds, Eugene W. Schupp, Hoyt J. Heaton, José M. Gomez
Great Basin Naturalist
Large areas of western rangeland are presently dominated by alien annual weeds such as Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass). These communities resist succession to perennial communities primarily because the annuals are competitively superior to establishing perennial seedlings and they promote fires that favor weeds over perennials. Succession may be further slowed, however, by low rates of seed dispersal into annual grasslands. We investigated the role of lagomorphs (Sylvilagus nuttalli, Nuttall's cottontail; S. audubonii, desert cottontail; and Lepus californicus, black-tailed jackrabbit) in seed dispersal across an ecotone between an open juniper woodland and an annual grassland. We collected pellets …

Girded About With A Lambskin, Matthew B. Brown
Girded About With A Lambskin, Matthew B. Brown
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The publication of the Book of Mormon brought forward the first of many comparisons between the restorational work of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his surrounding environment, including Freemasonry. One point of comparison has been the lambskin apparel mentioned in 3 Nephi 4:7. A possible connection exists between this item of apparel and ritual clothing that was worn in ancient Israel, Egypt, and Mesoamerica. I suggest a possible reason for the use of this item of clothing among the secret combinations in the Book of Mormon and discuss the lambskin apron used in Freemasonic ritual.

The Arabian Bountiful Discovered? Evidence For Nephi's Bountiful, Warren P. Aston
The Arabian Bountiful Discovered? Evidence For Nephi's Bountiful, Warren P. Aston
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
According to the Book of Mormon, a land named “Bountiful” was a fertile site on the Arabian Peninsula with timber, fresh water, and ore where Nephi built a ship to carry Lehi’s group to the New World. In the seemingly barren land of the southern Arabian peninsula, a site that appears to correspond to the description in Nephi’s record has been identified on the remote southern coast of the country of Oman. Kharfot may not be the exact location of Bountiful, but its discovery does show that a place matching the criteria for Bountiful does exist.

Effects Of Myofibrogranuloma On Serum Calcium Levels In Walleye (Stizostedion Vitreum), Craig A. Shoemaker, Harry L. Holloway Jr.
Effects Of Myofibrogranuloma On Serum Calcium Levels In Walleye (Stizostedion Vitreum), Craig A. Shoemaker, Harry L. Holloway Jr.
Great Basin Naturalist
The effect of myofibrogranuloma (skeletal muscle degeneration) on serum calcium levels in spawning walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) was examined. Mean serum calcium levels for healthy male walleye (11.7 ± 1.5 mg/100 ml serum) was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than calcium levels for healthy female walleye (15.4 ± 1.8 mg/100 ml serum). Significant increases (P < 0.1) in serum calcium were seen between healthy male and myofibrogranuloma-diseased male walleye (13.6 ± 2.1 mg/100 ml serum) and between healthy and myofibrogranuloma-diseased female walleye (20.2 ± 3.7 mg/100 ml serum). Elevations seen in mean serum calcium levels suggest the muscle degeneration and subsequent granuloma formation in later stages of myofibrogranuloma have a significant effect on serum calcium.

A Case For Lehi's Bondage In Arabia, S. Kent Brown
A Case For Lehi's Bondage In Arabia, S. Kent Brown
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The lengthy sojourn of Lehi’s family in the Arabian desert invites the almost inevitable question whether circumstances forced family members to live in the service of tribesmen either for protection or for food. In my view, enough clues exist in the Book of Mormon—they have to be assembled—to bring one to conclude that the family lived for a time in a servile condition, a situation that apparently entailed suffering and conflict.
