Reports, Karl Niederer, Eric Pumroy, Sabine Jessner, Scott Baumgartner, Fred Moser, Leo Schelbert, Selina Sutter
Swiss American Historical Society Review
President Karl J. Niederer called the meeting to order at 10: 10 a.m. The members were greeted by the Swiss honorary consul, Franz Portmann, who invited them to visit the Swiss consulate between 6th and 7th Streets, time permitting. Next Eric Pumroy, director of the Balch Institute of Ethnic Studies, welcomed those present and reminded them that this was the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Institute. He noted that the Swiss were in on the Institute's ground-breaking in 1972 and the SAHS records are housed there, as well as those of the Swiss Benevolent Society of New York. He also mentioned …

Parallel Database Architectures: A Simulation Study., Emad Eldin Mohamed Mohamed
Student Work
Parallel database systems are gaining popularity as a solution that provides scalability in large and growing databases. A parallel database system is a DBS which exploits multiprocessing systems to improve performance. Parallel database computers can be classified into three categories: shared memory, shared disk, and shared nothing. In shared memory, all resources, including main memory and disk units, are shared among several processors. In shared disk, a group of processors share a common pool of disks, but each processor has its own private main memory. In the shared-nothing system, every processor has its own memory and disk unit, that is, …
Homer, His Art And His World [Review], Erwin F. Cook
Homer, His Art And His World [Review], Erwin F. Cook
Classical Studies Faculty Research
First let me say what this book is not. Although the dust-jacket claims that the book includes "sections on the relevance of Homer to modern issues in literary criticism", it cannot be said to offer anything approaching a representative, let alone a comprehensive, survey of modern criticism, even as it is currently applied to Homer (H.). It does, in 34 pages, outline "the historical background to Homer and his poetry", but only for those who share the author's assumptions on the time, place, and circumstances of composition.
Singapore And The Experience Of Place In Old Age, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh, Peggy Teo
Singapore And The Experience Of Place In Old Age, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh, Peggy Teo
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Through case studies of two neighborhoods in Singapore with large concentrations of elderly residents-Tiong Bahru and Chinatown-we explore the relationship between the aged's emotional attachments to place and the sustenance of their personal identities, their continued participation in life, and their adaptation to changing circumstances. In particular, we examine their feelings of physical, social, and autobiographical insideness. We emphasize the rapidly changing physical conditions in Chinatown wrought by the government's conservation strategy and their implications for the elderly. In Tiong Bahru young people are moving to newer housing developments, leaving the aged behind in an essentially little-changed physical environment; we …

Childhood Memory And A History Of Different Forms Of Abuse, Timothy Melchert
Childhood Memory And A History Of Different Forms Of Abuse, Timothy Melchert
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
A widespread professional and public controversy has recently emerged regarding recovered memories of child sexual abuse, but the prevalence and nature of these memories have received limited empirical examination. This study (N = 553 nonclinical participants) found that very similar proportions of those with histories of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse reported that they had periods without memory of their abuse (21%, 18%, and 18%, respectively). The responses of approximately one half of these participants suggested that they lacked conscious access to their abuse memories, whereas the responses from the others suggested that they had conscious access to their …
Risky Business, Michael S. Baram
Risky Business, Michael S. Baram
Faculty Scholarship
In prior studies by high-level commissions, emphasis was given to improving the scientific basis and institutional procedures for risk assessment and risk regulation within existing statutory frameworks. Recommendations have led to slow but steady progress. This study is considerably different. It emphasizes a public health approach for efficient use of resources in a new flexible framework for risk management, reductionist approaches to risk assessment and characterization, increased public involvement, and various methods for managing such public involvement. It provides a mix of aspirations and concepts, procedures, and "shop floor rules" for putting the new system of risk management into practice. …

Service-Learning In One State: Results Of The North Carolina Service-Learning Inventory, Diane C. Calleson, Lani G. Parker, Robert C. Serow
Service Learning, General
Recent years have seen greatly expanded interest in service-learning among educators at both the K-12 and college levels. By most accounts, the initiation of service-learning programs and courses has come about in response to a recognized need to provide more effective citizenship education and to do a better job of preparing young people to be active members of their communities (see, for example, Barber). What is less clear, however, is the overall shape and substance of these programs. Because service-learning usually has a strong local component, not very much is known of the broader patterns and trends at the national …

The purpose of this study is to determine the fluid flow pattern obtained through the use of the countergravitaional process. The physical fluid flow model assists design engineers in their casting design of parts utilizing the LS-Vac technology thereby reducing tooling costs and time losses.

Securing Russia's Future: A Plea For Reform In Russian Secured Transactions Law, Jason J. Kilborn
Securing Russia's Future: A Plea For Reform In Russian Secured Transactions Law, Jason J. Kilborn
Michigan Law Review
After many turbulent years of uneasy transition to a market economy, Russia is finally "open for business." Nonetheless, the transitional period remains far from over, and Russian enterprises are still starved for capital that they desperately need for retooling to convert from military to consumer production, for acquiring new equipment to replace old and worn machinery, and for undertaking new and lucrative projects. While Russian financial institutions may provide significant funding, their reserves are limited; they could not hope to finance independently the multitude of existing and potential enterprises within the expansive Russian territory. Therefore, much of the financing for …

Glial Cell Line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Activates The Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Ret And Promotes Kidney Morphogenesis, Quinn Vega, Carolyn A. Worby, Mark S. Lechner, Jack E. Dixon, Gregory R. Dressler
Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The receptor tyrosine kinase RET functions during the development of the kidney and the enteric nervous system, yet no ligand has been identified to date. This report demonstrates that the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) activates RET, as measured by tyrosine phosphorylation of the intracellular catalytic domain. GDNF also binds RET with a dissociation constant of 8 nM, and 125I-labeled GDNF can be coimmunoprecipitated with anti-RET antibodies. In addition, exogenous GDNF stimulates both branching and proliferation of embryonic kidneys in organ culture, whereas neutralizing antibodies against GDNF inhibit branching morphogenesis. These data indicate that RET and GDNF are components …
