Vietnam's Contemporary Battle With The United States: Vying For Most Favored Nation Trading Status, Davis Frye Oct 1996

Vietnam's Contemporary Battle With The United States: Vying For Most Favored Nation Trading Status, Davis Frye

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Since the United States and Vietnam signed the Paris Peace Agreement of 1973, Vietnam has sought to normalize economic relations with the United States in hopes of gaining American capital and technology. After the Vietnam War, however, the United States imposed a trade embargo against Vietnam and passed legislation denying that country non-discriminatory trading status. Moreover, Vietnam's past human rights abuses and its previous unwillingness to resolve American MIA/POW issues made its ambition of normalized U.S. relations an improbability. Recently, however, in response to Vietnam's renewed cooperation with U.S. foreign objectives, President Clinton has lifted the trade embargo against that …

Ethnic Conflict And European Security: Lessons From The Past And Implications For The Future, Maria Alongi Ms.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

On October 23-25, 1995, coinciding with the Bosnia peace talks being held in Dayton, Ohio, Women in International Security (WIIS), an international, nonpartisan educational program; The Friedrich-Eberet Foundation; the U.S. Institute of Peace; and the Army War College's Strategic Studies Institute sponsored a conference, "Ethnic Conflict and European Security: Lessons from the Past and Implications for the Future." Among the participants and attendees were scholars and policymakers from the United States and Europe concerned with the crisis in the Balkans and the larger ramifications of ethnic conflict for European security.

This rapporteur's summary compiled by Ms. Maria Alongi captures the …

Civil-Military Relations And The Not-Quite Wars Of The Present And Future, Vincent Davis Dr. Oct 1996

Civil-Military Relations And The Not-Quite Wars Of The Present And Future, Vincent Davis Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Three papers presented at the Patterson School-Strategic Studies Institute Symposium focused on civil-military relations at various levels. West Point professor Don M. Snider maintains that continued pressures on the armed forces—especially the Army—to put aside war-fighting missions in favor of other missions will further strain civil-military relations. In the second essay, retired Admiral Stanley R. Arthur examines the broader aspects of civil-military relations where he sees a growing estrangement between all levels of the armed forces on the one hand, and the larger civilian society on the other. Finally, George Washington University professor Deborah D. Avant argues that the post-Vietnam …

Has Every Book Of The Bible Been Found Among The Dead Sea Scrolls?, Sidnie White Crawford Oct 1996

Has Every Book Of The Bible Been Found Among The Dead Sea Scrolls?, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

It is a commonplace that every book of the Hebrew Bible except Esther has been found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Actually, this is true only if you count Ezra-Nehemiah as one book-as, indeed, it is so regarded in Jewish tradition- since only a fragment of Ezra, but not Nehemiah, has been identified. But why not Esther? Some have suggested theological reasons: Esther is not a particularly religious book; it lacks any interest in Judah and its cultic institutions; and it has a sympathetic view toward the gentile King Ahasuerus. Moreover, it is the only book of the Hebrew Bible …

Elizabeth Seton—Mission Of Education: Faith And Willingness To Risk, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C. Oct 1996

Elizabeth Seton—Mission Of Education: Faith And Willingness To Risk, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C.

Vincentian Studies

Betty Ann McNeil imagines Elizabeth Seton speaking about her mission of education. Seton’s own words are combined with adaptations of her writings. The article recounts her call to mission and the difficulties she faced in New York, her mission in Maryland, and the challenges inherent in the founding of the Sisters of Charity and of Saint Joseph’s Academy in Emmitsburg. The educational model and the teaching methods used at Saint Joseph’s are discussed, and questions for reflection are offered to today’s educators. The Sisters’ works outside Emmitsburg are also mentioned.

Vincentian Education: A Call To Mission, Donald J. Harrington C.M. Oct 1996

Vincentian Education: A Call To Mission, Donald J. Harrington C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Donald Harrington, the president of St. John’s University, explores the dimensions that the Vincentian charism adds to work in education. The mission of Vincentian education is to instill Vincentian values, particularly love of the poor, in others. It is to help persons who are poor create better lives for themselves and “to preach Christ the evangelizer of the poor” to members of all social classes. Vincentian education is nourished by Vincentian spirituality. Educators must create an environment in which all are respected, so that God may be found in everyone. Educators’ actions will help others to know God. Vincentian education …

Segregated Catholicism: The Origins Of Saint Katharine's Parish, New Orleans, Douglas Slawson C.M. Oct 1996

Segregated Catholicism: The Origins Of Saint Katharine's Parish, New Orleans, Douglas Slawson C.M.

Vincentian Studies

The complicated history of the establishment of Saint Katharine’s, a black parish in New Orleans, is recounted. For reasons explained in the article, the city’s Catholic churches were originally racially integrated. There were two groups of blacks in New Orleans: colored Creoles (the term they used for themselves) and African Americans. Colored Creoles were people of Afro-French descent and they were Catholic. African Americans were Protestant and worshipped in separate churches from whites. This was partly because of racism in the white community and partly because African Americans wanted to control their own religious affairs. Francis Janssens, the archbishop, wanted …

The Congregation Of The Mission: An Example Of A Society Of Apostolic Life, Miguel Perez Flores C.M. Oct 1996

The Congregation Of The Mission: An Example Of A Society Of Apostolic Life, Miguel Perez Flores C.M.

Vincentian Studies

This article explains the new status that Societies of Apostolic Life were given under the Code of Canon Law of 1983. Historically, the law has been oriented toward the religious state, which created problems for communities like the Congregation. (These problems are discussed in the article.) The Congregation needed to be more flexible than a religious order to be able to function as missionaries, but Vincent de Paul wanted it to “[enjoy] all that is good about religious life without being religious in the canonical sense.” The canons for Societies of Apostolic Life are based on a “theology of mission,” …

Modeling Interactions Of Browsing Predation, Infaunal Activity And Recruitment In Marine Soft-Sediment Habitats, Sara M. Lindsay, David S. Wethey, Sarah A. Woodin Oct 1996

Modeling Interactions Of Browsing Predation, Infaunal Activity And Recruitment In Marine Soft-Sediment Habitats, Sara M. Lindsay, David S. Wethey, Sarah A. Woodin

Faculty Publications

In marine soft-sediment habitats, the sediment surface is altered by activities of sediment dwellers (infauna). Such biogenic disturbance can influence recruitment success if settling larvae and juveniles avoid disturbed sites or if juveniles die as a result of disturbance after settling. Because infauna commonly lose exposed body parts to browsing predators and disturb less sediment as a result, we developed a simulation model to examine the interactions between browsing predation, infaunal adult activity, and recruitment. Sediment disturbance in the model was based on data for the polychaete Abarenicola pacifica. We simulated the activity of two general types of predators: prey …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

DAVID COCHRAN explores the world Chester Himes has created in his hard-boiled cop series set in Harlem as a reflection of reality and Himes's own experiences. A doctoral candidate in American cultural history at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Cochran has published two articles previously and is working on a dissertation covering popular culture in the Cold War era.

MICHAEL A. GRIFFITH contends that Plato, in Phaedrus, distinguishes between philosophy, as the superior intellectual endeavor, and poetry and rhetoric, as its inferiors, in the same way he would distinguish between love and sex, the one sublin1e and the others obstacles to …

Fire Management Of Spinifex Pastures In The Coastal And West Pilbara, John Stretch Oct 1996

Fire Management Of Spinifex Pastures In The Coastal And West Pilbara, John Stretch

Agriculture reports

Spinifex dominated plant communities are a major natural pasture resource in the Pilbara. Spinifex is noted for its ridged, hard and generally sharp pointed leaf blades, although individual species vary in this respect. Triodia pungens and T. schinzii are often referred to as soft spinifex. Soft spinifex is useful as stock feed in its own right, whereas 'hard' spinifex species are rarely grazed by stock. Soft spinifex dominated pastures are relatively uncommon in eastern parts but important on the western coastal plains of the Pilbara (Figure 1). Information on spinifex management options available to the pastoralist or station manager is …

A Historical Perpective On Contemporary Challenges In Workers' Compensation, Terence G. Ison Oct 1996

A Historical Perpective On Contemporary Challenges In Workers' Compensation, Terence G. Ison

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Workers' compensation has entered a period of rising complexity and increasing pressures for system change. This article explains the extent to which important assumptions and assertions made in this process are historically correct. The discussion includes the historical interaction of tort liability with workers' compensation, and the current proposals for "privatization."
