Native American Life Stories And "Authorship": Legal And Ethical Issues, Lenora P. Ledwon Oct 1996

Native American Life Stories And "Authorship": Legal And Ethical Issues, Lenora P. Ledwon

Faculty Articles

Juridical discourse concerning life stories has been primarily concerned with property and contract issues, and categories such as "ownership" and "authorship." Such legal discourse generally fails to acknowledge the unique nature of Native American life stories, particularly when such stories are written in collaboration with a non-Native editor or transcriber. This essay focuses on one fundamental question with overlapping legal and ethical aspects: how does a non-Native collaborator avoid a colonizing relationship to Native American texts? In suggesting possible answers to this vexing question, I always have on the horizon of my mind's eye two figures-Emmanuel Levinas, the philosopher, and …

The Relation Between Maternal Beliefs And Behavior And The Metabolic Control And Social Development Of Children With Diabetes, Peggy Ann Herzog-Simmer Oct 1996

The Relation Between Maternal Beliefs And Behavior And The Metabolic Control And Social Development Of Children With Diabetes, Peggy Ann Herzog-Simmer

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the relation between maternal control, beliefs, and concerns and the metabolic and social development outcomes of their children with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). It was expected that maternal control (i.e., protectiveness, knowledge and beliefs about. diabetes, and self-efficacy) would be positively related to children's outcomes as measured by their metabolic control, social and behavioral development. Thirty mother/child dyads participated. Children met the following criteria: (a) 4 to 16 years of age, (b) continually insulin-dependent for at least four months, and (c) had no significant cognitive or emotional impairment. To examine the effects of maternal control and …

Downsizing America In The Twentieth Century: A Sociological And Theoretical Analysis Of The Shrinking Middle Class, Terreea Lynne Adams Oct 1996

Downsizing America In The Twentieth Century: A Sociological And Theoretical Analysis Of The Shrinking Middle Class, Terreea Lynne Adams

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Downsizing is the process by which a firm decreases its number of employees, even during times of a strong economy, with the stated purpose of generating greater efficiency, productivity and of course, profit. The downsizing trend in the United States during the past three decades has resulted in an enormous shift in the structure of our society. Various theorists, sociologists and economists employ differing ways of looking at this downsizing trend and its effects on the largest segment of the population; that is, the middle class.

lndications of a healthy economy are low levels of unemployment and poverty-. Downsizing involves …

Passage Or Pathology: Current Attitudes Toward Women's Aging In The Literature Of Menopause, Kaaren Gearhart Ancarrow Oct 1996

Passage Or Pathology: Current Attitudes Toward Women's Aging In The Literature Of Menopause, Kaaren Gearhart Ancarrow

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Menopause is currently portrayed in the medical literature as a pathological 11 process resulting from "hormone deficiency." However, feminist writers contend that the climacteric is part of the normal female aging process and oppose the medicalization of menopause and the consequent inevitable hormone replacement therapy (HR T) promoted by the hegemonic medical and pharmaceutical industries. This paper explores the historical development of these two paradigms of menopause and their manifestations in samples of three classes of contemporary literature on the subject: gynecological textbooks, popular advice books written by physicians, and women's accounts. Five major themes are investigated using quantitative and …

School Behavior And Perception Of The Family Environment Of Delinquent Youth, Anne Rachel Greenberg Oct 1996

School Behavior And Perception Of The Family Environment Of Delinquent Youth, Anne Rachel Greenberg

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the perceptions that juvenile delinquents have of their family environment as they pertain to their current school behavior and treatment placement. The 75 subjects, ages 12 to 17 years, both male and female had been placed by the local juvenile and domestic relations court into one of three treatment programs. The subjects in the In-home treatment placement group perceived higher levels of Cohesion and Control, as measured by the Family Environment Scale (F.E.S.). The subjects in the Residential placement group perceived lower levels of Conflict. Conflict was found to be negatively correlated to problem school behavior as …

The Crash Simulation And Analysis Of The Friendly Mobile Barrier, Bryan Edward Marz Oct 1996

The Crash Simulation And Analysis Of The Friendly Mobile Barrier, Bryan Edward Marz

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Mass transportation is an ever increasing alternative being researched and evaluated in today's society. With the increase of demand for such transportation, an increase in safety is also needed. This research entails the analysis of a new idea, The Friendly Mobile Barrier, in railroad crossing barrier design. The design is meant to prevent any approaching vehicle from crossing a railroad track and be survivable for those impacting the barrier.

Research conducted involves the crash simulation and analysis of the Friendly Mobile Barrier. The Friendly Mobile Barrier was analyzed structurally using finite element analysis. An advanced lumped-mass mathematical model software, Crash …

Effects Of Initial Geometric Imperfections On The Behavior Of Graphite-Epoxy Cylinders Loaded In Compression, William Allen Waters Jr. Oct 1996

Effects Of Initial Geometric Imperfections On The Behavior Of Graphite-Epoxy Cylinders Loaded In Compression, William Allen Waters Jr.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The results of an experimental and analytical study of selected composite cylinders loaded in axial compression beyond buckling are presented. A comparison is made of buckling loads predicted by a nonlinear finite element code and those obtained from laboratory experiments. The initial geometric imperfections for each specimen were defined mathematically for inclusion in the finite element model. The experimental effort consisted of testing five graphite-epoxy cylindrical specimens. Four of the specimens were 16 plies thick; one of these had quasi-isotropic wall properties, another consisted entirely of angle plies, while the remaining specimens of this wall thickness were of two different …

Effects Of Exposure To Information About Appearance Stereotyping And Discrimination On Body Image And Mood, Melissa Ann Brown Oct 1996

Effects Of Exposure To Information About Appearance Stereotyping And Discrimination On Body Image And Mood, Melissa Ann Brown

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present experiment examined how information about societal appearance discrimination can affect current body image. Sixty-six female college students listened to audiotapes containing information about either appearance discrimination or an unrelated topic, television violence. Afterward, participants completed measures of mood and body-image states. They also completed the Appearance Schemas Inventory (ASI), an assessment of maladaptive investment in appearance (i.e., appearance schematicity). As expected, participants exposed to the appearance information subsequently reported significantly greater body-image dissatisfaction than did those in the Control condition. Conditions did not differentially affect mood state or ASI scores. Participants were divided into upper and lower tertiles …

Characterization Of Rainfall Runoff Quality From A Shipyard Drydock, Peter Pommerenk Oct 1996

Characterization Of Rainfall Runoff Quality From A Shipyard Drydock, Peter Pommerenk

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Water quality and hydrological data were collected during seventeen rain events and additional data was obtained from laboratory experiments to characterize the quality of stormwater runoff from a drydock located on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk, Virginia.

The results indicated that the concentrations of dissolved constituents in drydock runoff increased with decreasing flow rate, while solids concentrations exhibited positive correlation to flow rate, suggesting that the mobilization of particulate matter is velocity driven. Approximating the runoff hydrograph due to a storm event using a simple model enabled derivation of the average time that rainwater resides on the drydock surface before …

The Effectiveness Of Film Cooling In A Hypersonic Flowfield With Favorable Pressure Gradients, Julie A. Young Oct 1996

The Effectiveness Of Film Cooling In A Hypersonic Flowfield With Favorable Pressure Gradients, Julie A. Young

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The impetus of this technical document is to report results of aerothermodynamic cooling of a scramjet nozzle under favorable pressure gradients. The goals of film cooling are to protect the nozzle skin from the high enthalpy combustor flow, reduce regenerative cooling requirements, and decrease nozzle skin friction. A hypersonic nozzle configuration for which experimental data exists was selected as the basis of this numerical study. As a first step, the numerical results of film cooling along a flat plate are compared to previous literature to validate the numerical model. Subsequently, computations are performed to study the effects of varying the …

There was also a statistically significant difference noted for the LCS™ Rotating Platform …

Real-Time Visual Speech Articulation Training Aid, Neiyer S. Correal Oct 1996

Real-Time Visual Speech Articulation Training Aid, Neiyer S. Correal

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A real-time visual articulation training aid has been implemented. It provides instantaneous visual feedback of vowel and stop-consonant production on a computer screen. The vowel training system corresponds to an improved floating-point implementation of a previous fixed-point system developed by Beck (1992). The new implementation provides better accuracy and an approximate five-fold increase in speed. Acoustic features computed from global short-time spectral shape are used for classification of vowels. Temporal spectral trajectories timed to begin with burst onset are used for stop consonants. A neural network is used to transform measurements of auditory stimuli from the feature space to a …

A Structural Model Of Antecedents And Consequences Of Satisfaction With Growth And Development, Greg E. Loviscky Oct 1996

A Structural Model Of Antecedents And Consequences Of Satisfaction With Growth And Development, Greg E. Loviscky

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Because downsizing and re-organizing have altered the social contract between employers and employees, employees have found additional incentive to grow and develop by adding to their portfolio of skills. In order to establish the validity of satisfaction with growth and development, an hypothesized model is tested and compared with competing models. 'our hundred and sixty three employees from a large southeastern city completed a questionnaire that examined attitudes regarding satisfaction with growth and development, general job satisfaction, and hypothesized antecedents (i.e., context and individual variables) and consequences (i.e., organizational commitment) of satisfaction with growth and development. LISREL VIII (Joreskog & …

Listening To Women's Voices: Living In Post-Communist Romania, Nicki Negrau Oct 1996

Listening To Women's Voices: Living In Post-Communist Romania, Nicki Negrau

Connecticut Journal of International Law

As the wave of democracy swept across Eastern Europe in 1989, it seemed unlikely that Romania, long a communist stronghold, could resist the promise of freedom and democracy. In December, 1989, the demand for democracy culminated when the Romanians rose up and rejected their iron-fisted ruler, Ceaucescu, in the bloodiest break from communism in Eastern Europe that the world had witnessed. The revolution of 1989 is a milestone for people in Romania, with tremendous emotional and psychological impact. Everyone I met framed their thoughts and comments around the revolution--they discussed life before the revolution and compared it with life after …

Abortion Counselling And The 1995 German Abortion Law, Nanette Funk Oct 1996

Abortion Counselling And The 1995 German Abortion Law, Nanette Funk

Connecticut Journal of International Law

State transformations brought on by the fall of communism have placed the revision of abortion law on the agenda in many of the affected countries. Hungary had a major constitutional court decision on abortion in 1991 and passed a new law in 1992. Romania and Poland passed new abortion laws, the latter restricting abortion severely2, the former liberalizing it extensively. The Czech Republic as well as Bulgaria modified their laws. In Germany, one of the longest lasting unresolved issues of the unification of Germany on October 3, 1990 was not military or economic, but abortion law and the relation of …

Democratization And Women's Employment In Post-Communist Bulgaria, Emily Stoper, Emilia Ianeva Oct 1996

Democratization And Women's Employment In Post-Communist Bulgaria, Emily Stoper, Emilia Ianeva

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Like the other former Warsaw Pact nations, Bulgaria overthrew its Communist regime in 1989 and embarked on a course with the hopeful name "democratization." Simultaneously, Bulgaria began marketization; that is, a movement away from a centrally planned economy and toward a market system integrated with the world economy. Both democracy and marketization are among a long series of international trends that have swept across Bulgaria since it gained its independence in 1878 - with an influence that in general has been more nominal than real. Of all the international trends that have shaped post-independence Bulgaria, only Sovietstyle socialism has had …

Symposium: The Status Of Women In New Market Economies - April 14-15, 1996, The University Of Connecticut School Of Law Hartford, Connecticut: Commentary, Eileen Silverstein Oct 1996

Symposium: The Status Of Women In New Market Economies - April 14-15, 1996, The University Of Connecticut School Of Law Hartford, Connecticut: Commentary, Eileen Silverstein

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Our sisters in the East are justifiably concerned about the effects of gender-specific regulations in the workplaces of market-based economies. The pernicious history of protective legislation in the industrialized countries of the West tells a cautionary tale of restricted opportunities for women in paid employment, whether the restrictions are the product of rude bias, good intentions, or misguided hopes for universally improved conditions developing from gender-specific rules.' The legacy of this history is a healthy skepticism about any gender-based differentiation of employment terms.

We should not, however, automatically regard legal recognition of differences as inevitably harmful for women. Recent experience …
